Subject: SOMA
Ok now that The Nathans is over, it is time to look to the near future. Soma is around the corner. I will be signing up for it tonight. Thought I would start a thread to have some discourse about it. Who is doing it? Who has done it? What do you think about it past and future? What is the weight of a swallow?

I find it helpful to keep my wheel turned in the right direction at all times. So now when I finish one race I make sure to have another lined up.

I look forward to the witty banter and profound knowledge that will come.

Your friendly neighborhood bovine animal,
OX

Well, I got kicked out of it before it started last year. I'm hoping this year will be a tad bit better

tip: If they halve the bike course, try not to ask nicely if you'll receive a partial refund. They just might boot you from the race 5 minutes before posting that they extended the course just to teach you a lesson.  haha!

I've heard that they have a new owner, but still have the old owner running the race.

I liked the event last year and am not yet signed up (got another event in 2 weeks - -we'll see if I want to do another that close).  Based on my experience last year, I would do this event again - - although I they have a better bike course planned than the one everyone has been discussing.

So, the event last year was good.

The communication before the event, as Chris alluded to, was horrid.

(Chris: Tim DeBoom is now a partial owner, but Jeff is still partial too I think. I also believe Kimo is a partial owner, but not sure).

Nothing changed for the half, but for the quarter they changed the bike course. It is supposed to be 28 miles (1/4 of 112). The half is 3 laps to get 56, but they had problems, so they decided to make the quarter 1 lap. That turned it into 19 miles, which is barely a sprint. Then, they ended up making it so we did 1 and 2/3'rds lap, making it 30, but communicated very poorly so people got irritated. I for one rode the second lap slower because I couldn't figure out where/when I was going to turn around.

18 is too short for a good race, IMO.

I'm 50/50 on SOMA right now. Depends on if I can get swimming next week. If I can I might do it but train through. Do my long bike on Saturday and then race Sunday. I've fallen too far behind in training for my comfort, but that double could be good.

I like the race, and I think that Red Rocks does a good job with it.  For an amateur like myself, it has a big and important feel to it, and I feel like I am part of a 'major' event.

I am in for the half this year.

Well I will be keeping my eye on the bike course. I hope that it isn't as bad as The Nathans bike course. That was a mess. I heard yesterday that the run was about one full circle around Tempe Town lake. That is for those of us that are doing the 1/4.

If its the same bike course as last year (not sure if it went over where the light rail now does, I am thinking no) its actually a GOOD course. A few U-turns but otherwise some nice LONG straights that are super fast. The 28 miles (is that what it was?) was only 1.5 laps. No problems there! I rode the 56 mile course last year just because it was so darn FUN!

I think RedRock put on a stellar event for Nathans - and I was one of those who was NOT a huge fan of theirs due to SOMA last year.

I am unable to do SOMA, but I would again if I could. Robot will be there and I will be out there cheering SUPER LOUD for all of you!

I am doing SOMA for the first time and doing my first 1/4. I am a bit nervous. I did Nathan's for the first time on Sunday and was not impressed with the bike course or some of the riders. No one really bothered me on the route although I had a couple people pass me on the right even though I was as close to the cones as I could be without actually riding on them. The people that passed me on the right actually went on the other side of the cone in the lane of traffic that was not blocked for us. But, I did hear people screaming at other bikers to move out of the way and that bothered me.

Nathan's was the first race I have done that has been so crowded. I learned very quickly in the water that the back is not where I want to be. Lesson learned for SOMA. I was disaapointed with my bike time. So, I will be working on that for SOMA.

Is the bike route that is listed on SOMA website going to be the bike course? At least it is a little more spread out but some of the turns are going to be tight again.

I was beyond disappointed in SOMA last year from the event end of things.  It was good to see Jen doing the 1/2 bike while signedup for the 1/4 and seeing Josh and Tanya do thier first 70.3.  However, Like Chris I was ridiculed when e-mailing the race director about the many changes to the bike leg and the final, final (before the actual extended final) had the race down to sprint levels.  Instead of sharing the difficulty that they were having with Tempe and the light-rail - they basically made me feel as if it was my fault for signing up for the race.

On the run is was one loop of TTL with a very odd out and back to the 202 stuck in there.  Weather was freaky hot that day (blame the cosmos!) and it turned into a tough one for alot of folks.

That said - I am out of SOMA.  As I stated earlier, with the exception of IMAZ - I am of the opinion that Tempe is creating situations for race directors on Bike legs that take the fun out their races by having odd and often short multiple loops.  Not that Tempe donates the time and road rights and officers to the race - they make sure to charge a pretty penney for a tarnished location!  I am going to stick with the exotic race locations (Like Anthem, Glendale, AJ, Flagstaff, etc.) until rumor among participants shows that Tempe is back to trying to embrace the sport.

I'm in for the 1/4 and I'm pumped! I'm a little nervous about the bike as it sounds like it's either too short or very poorly organized. I could live without so many tight turns and a short loop but I've signed up and I'll be ready to race whatever course they map out. This will be my first time to swim in a wetsuit and I'm anxious to see how that helps and after not attacking the bike course hard at Nathan’s I'm ready for another opportunity to ride to my ability in a race.

Still on the fence about SOMA!!  Training is finally getting consistent, so I'm leaning towards registering and doing the 1/4.  Would love to do the 1/2, but just don't have the fitness.  Plan is to [hopefully] do the 1/4, then switch gears to preparing for the RnR Marathon and maintenance/aerobic base building.

Next year, then, follow the marathon up with getting ready for an early season 1/2 (thinking about Oceanside 70.3), some tune up races through the summer and IMAZ in November!!  And, hopefully, maybe, if the lottery gods are good (or bad depending on how you look at it) to me Kona in October.

    What????

Im in the 1/2. It will be my first and more so than not my last. I dont like the amount of training and the time it takes. Plus, me having to run 13 miles after all of that is playing havok on my soft smooth baby feet. However, if I do plan on another one it will be Vineman.....

    My goal is -7:30hours

The weather has to be great for this race. None of this 90+ heat.... Plus Jer said he will run for me.. Thanks Jer!!!

I am in for the 1/4. I have only done sprints thus far and I am excited to see how it goes doing a little longer distance. It should be exciting. I don't really mind all the crazy corners on the Tempe bike courses. The seem to work to my advantage. Everyone seemed to be overly cautious on the corners yesterday and I was able to make up some serious time there.

I am one of those people overly cautiouse on the turns. I don't want to end my race because I wanted 30sec less at the end. I am a mid to back of the backer anyway. Ryan you have a chance at the podium so if I was you I would push it too.

I realy hope there are longer straight aways in Soma. I need distance. I know what I can do with wide open areas and it is much faster than I was Sunday.

I just looked and the bike course information is up. All I have to say is WTF? I don't understand it bu I haven't really taken the time to look at it on a good map. IDK how we're going to do 1.5 loops for the 1/4man. Atleast there are 5 weeks to figure it out. I think I may go on the pre race ride this time.

I just looked at the site, it's the same as last year for the quarter. I think it
    ends up being 30 miles.

That long out and back Rio Salado, and instead of turning right, you go back
to transition on the second lap.

I am all registered.  I am in it for sure now.  I have allot of work to do, but it should be fun.  I can't complain about the course since I have never done it.  Maybe after I complete the course I will gripe, but not until then.

Anyway, I am a definite now!  See you in the training logs!
