I'm in for this one as well!  2nd time at eagleman.  Loved it despite the hottest race I've ever done (and I did IMKY in 2010!).

Can't wait!

Back for my second helping of Eagleman. Did it in 2011 and had a great time despite pushing too hard on the bike and paying for it on the run. There seems to be a theme of redemption here.

First time HIM. Scared silly. Done a bunch of sprints and Olys, many half marathons. Have a ton of questions about this race that I can't find on the website.  Anyone have last years athlete guide? Is it really as hot and windy as I keep hearing it is? How about the swim? I understand its salt water? Is it really choppy?

Last year's race was hot (low 90s by early PM) and humid, but not as hot as 2009 (where temps hit or came close to 100).  The wind was not an issue last year, but there are a number of open sections where I can see it being an issue.  I was also worried about the saltwater issue, but the water was mildy brackish and didn't notice the salt issue.  Expect and train for adverse conditions.  However, if you live on the East Coast like many of us it is hard to replicate hot and humid during the winter build months.  Shoot me a PM if you have any more questions.

The water isnt very choppy. Its brackish more than salty, its in the Choptank river right in Cambridge.  Oh and dont be scared of the swim, you can pretty much stand up through most of the swim course if you get in trouble.

Regarding hot and windy.. yes, typically.  Not always that hot though - recently yes.

With the wind, it is, yes, and somewhat deceptive - you will see a lot of people lose it on the run because they went harder than they thought on the bike - or didn't drink enough because the wind made them seem less "sweaty" - a great HIM to fail due to nutrition.

Awesome race though, I'm in for my second time - I lost it on the run (with many others) in 2010.

Goal this year: Sub 5

Not in for 2012 as I think I'm going to rest on my laurels for this race, hopefully try a full IM distance race instead. But I've done the race 3 times (2008, 2009, 2011) and have race reports for all 3 times here on BT. Other than the fact that it can get hot for this race and one might not have the chance to acclimate (2008 and 2010 were hot), what you have to remember is that the flat courses are deceptive. For the bike, you are always pedaling...no downhills for pause. And winds can also wear you down on the bike. In 2009, they were my primary downfall - 25 miles of headwinds. But, they have been know to be variable in different places on the course too. So if you don't either save something for the run or adapt to running after constantly pedaling, you'll be toast when you get to the run or soon there after. BTW, the swim is okay...kinda brackish water, sometimes sea nettles come in but I only had a slight problem with that in 2009. No wetsuit last year, water was too warm. Now, after a disastrous run in 2009, finally had a great Eagleman and HIM race in 2011 (there's that redemption theme again). I'm now a firm believer in starting weekly brick training a few months out leading up to long bricks later 2-3 weeks before the race and in the afternoon during the warmest part of the day. I did two 50 mile bike/9 mile run bricks in May and definitely helped me adapt as well as hone my race day bike/run strategy. So, read on, but I'm fairly detailed with my experiences so it might take a while for you to get through them. Good luck everyone at Eagleman 2012!

I am traveling in from NH and would greatly appreciate any insight on hotels. It looks like the Hyatt is booked, any other recommendations close to the start? Holiday Inn Express? Thanks!

On a side note - I just checked out my AGs (30-34M) overall times and this one fast course! Top 5 all going under 4:30 is really impressive. The run splits are comparable to what we see here, but the bike splits were INSANE! I cannot wait to race this course!

Anything in Cambridge is relatively close to the start.  Easton is closeby, too.

I'm staying here:

They still have rooms as of today.  It's about a 30-35 minute drive to the race site, and there are tons of restaurants (way more than Cambridge or Easton).  The beach is only 25 minutes the other direction if you want to check that out.

NurseHeather - 2011-11-25 8:11 PM Wait? Is EagleMan sold out already?

According to the website, yes it is.

I signed up the hour it opened, just to be sure. I'm fortunate for housing, as my aunt and uncle live outside Denton MD, so we're set for all TriColumbia events.

Oh boy...and the fun begins again... I'm shocked that it took this long for this race to sell out.

6 months until June! Time to think about hitting the bike again... The break was to short.

Any recomendations on a beach town for us to rent a house the week following the race? (It was a tough sell, but got my wife to agree to the "race-cation") Looking for good eats and a laid back stay. Thanks a ton for any advice!

If you're looking for a traditional beach house, then probably in the Bethany, DE area.  They have a bunch of those mini-mansion types near the beach (sorta like the north end of the Outer Banks, though MUCH smaller area).  Ocean City MD is another option where you'd be renting a beach-front condo in a high rise, or renting a small townhouse a couple of blocks from the beach.

Both have their charms...we're doing the OC thing for a Sunday-Sunday rental the week after Eagleman.

I've never stayed in Bethany but if you want some OC info PM me and I'll give you more details.
