We went and saw this yesterday.

Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were shockingly good. As was Amanda Sygfried. I knew he could sing but the women were surprising. Russell Crowe on the other hand, you could tell he was really struggling, and he was off a key. The constant close-ups of the actors got a bit old and the story dragged somewhat since they added a song or two (I think) but overall I would say it will win some Oscars. It was very well done. There's no unsung dialogue so if you don't like musicals, don't go. If you do, you'll enjoy it.

They really should have been able to find someone other than Russell Crowe.  I was most surprised to find out that Anne Hathaway had an amazing voice - and holy crap can she belt out a tune.

It was over the top, it was long, and there were far too many close-up shots...  But I still loved it and really wished I had brought more kleenex with me.

I heard a professional critic make the same observations as 2Goggs in an unfavorable review. Not a Broadway/musical fan and will probably not even add to my Blockbuster queue, regardless of the review. Too many other movies out there that I would prefer to see.

Saw it last night. I actually really liked Russell Crowe. I've was a choir nerd growing up, but was completely untrained etc. I enjoyed Crowe for his 'real' voice and strong vocals. Yes, he probably wasn't as 'pro' as some others. Reading reviews of the movie and the soundtrack, many thought all the singers sucked a big one. Oh well. I enjoyed it.

I agree with the close ups and out of focus of that camera work.

Not to hijack, but how was Parental Guidance? I saw The Impossible -- I thought it was terrific. Thanks for the review of Les Mis. I had wanted to see it but my interest has been waning over the past few days. It sounds like I probably will be ok if I don't make it a priority. I will probably try to see Django, This is 40, and Parental Guidance first.

Parental Guidance was your typical fare......my twins are 12 and they loved it.  Crystal and Midler are about what you'd expect.  It's a good movie to see with your family/kids.

I took my kids to a matinee showing of the Hobbit yesterday.  The line to get seated for Les Mis was easily 100 people long, and that was a good 35 minutes before that show started.

Any guy wondering if they should take their wife to Les Mis needs to watch the South Park episode about Broadway plays.  I'll be taking the wife as soon as the crowds thin out a bit.

We went and saw this yesterday.

Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were shockingly good.

I'm not surprised at all about Anne Hathaway. She can sing her derriere off (that's French for..well, you know). She was on a Simpsons episode, and, at the very end, she sings five seconds of "Moon River" and it's probably the best I've ever heard anyone sing that song.

Supposedly, Hugh Jackman lobbied for her to be cast, and when she came in, her audition was so good that everyone else in the room was weeping when she finished. Her mother was in a travelling company of Les Mis when Anne was young.

I'd rather see no name actors who could SING - or named actors who could (Hathaway) than see good actors struggle. I agree it was long and the close close ups got old...but overall an ok movie

Completely agree! We saw it at a premier showing last week (yes, DH got dragged along)

Hathaway was amazing, and Jackman was pretty good, but Crowe? I actually thought the young man who played Marius was the best cast part of the whole movie.

. Russell Crowe sucks. I heard him sing in his cr@ppy band and he sucks. The rest of the characters and the movie sound like it would be worth going to, though.

We saw it on the 27th and had similar thoughts.  The wife and I were a bit disappointed with the casting of Russel Crowe.  The kid who played the love interest (who was on Pillars of the Earth mini series, BTW) was shockingly good.  Amanda Sygfried was really good to (but had such a soprano voice, reminded me of a Disney song/singer) .  It's not like they DIDN'T have enough big names in it already to NEED Russel Crowe...  Sacha Baron Cohen just seems to impress me over and over with his interesting versatility.

I knew Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were good already.

I liked it a lot except some of the solo singing scenes seemed to drag on a bit.  Sort of like LONG monologues done to music...

There was a moment I had to stifle a laugh at the end.  Not because it was funny, cuz I was getting all teary eyed myself.  But you could hear everyone in the theater all sobbing and balling...

As a side note, I still have a crazy weird crush on Helena Bonham Carter.

Saw this on FB and laughed...

Saw it on Christmas day, great movie.  Russell Crowe as Javert was a stretch but otherwise very good movie.

Finally saw it yesterday with the family and really enjoyed it.

I think you have to know what to expect when going in. There aren't many movies where the entire dialogue is sung. If you don't know that going in you might ne put off.

I liked Crowe as Javert.

Took the whole family to see it yesterday, and we all really enjoyed it. My girls (11 & 13) were a blubbery mess for the whole second half of the movie (and I have to admit, I may have shed a tear or two myself). I thought it was pretty well done.

I saw the play a few years ago. To say it was insufferable would be understating how painful it was to sit through. Personally I don't care for when mediums mesh. I would not go to an Italian restaurant to eat sushi, I would not buy a car for the sound system, nor do I see why anyone would want to make a play (with singing only) into a movie, much less pay to see it. But its probably just me...

I saw the musical on Broadway and was sorely disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the movie for better visuals and better overall sound.

I was definitely not disappointed.  It was a very straight forward telling of the musical's version of the story.  I agree that Crowe was frankly terrible.  I didn't particularly like Amanda Seyfried's voice, too chirpy.  Eponine, by the way, was also very good.   It's too bad that Fantine's role was so short...    I think I see the point of the close ups, but it caused me to spend too much time thinking about their teeth.  Did they ask the actors to stop brushing, or was that all seriously just makeup?   Wow.  Sacha Baron Cohen was a big highlight (although his character was so frustrating, ugh!).

The one thing I'd do differently is not sing nearly every word.   The songs are lovely, but signing the dialog is what caused it to drag so much.  Each actor sang basically the sang tune while "speaking."
