How do they not have to tie their shoelaces?

Veteran  263  |  Subject: How do they not have to tie their shoelaces?I was watching a tri on TV a couple of weeks ago, and impressed with their transition skills. I was confused about one thing: they all had shoes with laces, but none seemed to take any time to tie their shoes. It was like they pulled a string and that was it. Is there some secret lace-tying gadget I don't know about? Their transitions were so fast it was amazing. |

I got them at a bike shop that also carries tri gear. You may also want to check a running shoe shop and I know you can get them online. They're >$10 |

The ones I bought are Fuel Belt brand elastic laces with locks. But since I've never used them, I can't vouche for how good they are. I'm a newbie too! Did first race the other day and realized sitting down to tie and double knot laces is not cool... My friend was sitting there drying his feet real good when someone yelled for him to get moving! Congrats on finishing your first tri (that's a great one, BTW, my wife's friends all started with that tri)! I am still pretty new myself, and learning about all these funky supplies. The laces seem like a great investment, even the psychological edge it gives to just ZZZZZIPPP the laces! I'm gonna head over to the running store for lunch, otherwise I'll have to make the trek out to Inside Out Sports. I'm so excited to try these. New Toy!!! |

I think you read my mind. I have a sprint (Mayo Lake up in Roxboro NC -- come on down, ya'll) on Saturday and was thinking about using them for the race. I should at least use them once first though. My brother in law gave me some nice tri socks right before a race and was offended when I said I would use them my very first run after the triathlon. I have a narrow heel and with every running shoe I have ever had, I've had to lace in a special way in order to help the back of the shoe cup my heel. Sadly, I will be one of the slowbies in T2 because I will need to take the time to lace! |

Sadly, I will be one of the slowbies in T2 because I will need to take the time to lace! I had some sloppiness in the heel with my last shoes and I was able to use Yankz! If I recall correctly (I didn't do it on the new shoes), I laced up to the first of the 2 top holes (the ones level w/each other) so the string was coming out the first hole, then went in to the hole right next to it (the 2nd set of holes), I was then able to cross the strings and thread them through the "loop" I made between the holes. Pull it tight and heel sloppiness was gone! Check google, there are lots of ways to lace shoes to help cup the heel. |

Based on the great advice here I just went to our local running store (9th Street Active Feet in Durham NC) and they had some iBungi laces for 5 bucks a pair! I bought two pairs. I will try them out tomorrow morning and report back Gotta love new toys, especially when they are only five bucks! |

On all of my pairs, I think I have the tension adjusted properly, but a few miles into a run I will realize they are too tight or too loose and have to adjust (sometimes multiple times). Thanks for the reinforcement. My Lock Laces arrived the other day and it's so tempting to put them on my shoes and do a few short runs before my triathlon this weekend. No new toys until after the race, though. |

If you are cheap like me (or at least don't have a whole lot of money and are saving it for more important things like a new bike) you can just buy a bunch of cylindrical-shaped elastic (you can probably get it at any fabric or home-goods type store) and put it in your shoes and make a knot, instead of the more fancy types that you might have to pay a bit more for (although I'm sure its not too expensive ). Plus elastic band like that can always be handy for other things too We use this for my youth team in Korea, it works great! |

I pull my shoes on and take them off without untying or retying them. My shoes don't feel too loose (and I retie if they do). I do this for training and racing. Am I the only one who does this? Is it bad? I do the same thing. That way I know what the tension of the laces will be (not too tight at the top or too loose at the bottom). I have separate race and training shoes but I do the same thing with both. I've never had to readjust. The key is to tie them so tight that you can barely get your foot in without a fight. |

Veteran 335 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: How do they not have to tie their shoelaces? I have speedlaces and love them...they are not flexible at all and they stay tensioned evenly throughout the run. You need to get the friction free eyelets to make them most effective. |
