How far ahead do you feel this year over last year?

Last year was my first year and I was training for HIM in Sept.  I took a couple months with reduced training and had some ITB problems, but I feel like I am not much further ahead in training than I was this time last year.

Is there typically a benefit that will be realized as my training moves along, at some point will last years base miles kick in and give me the boost that I need in my training?  Or, is training so specific and defined that you lose much of your fitness in the off season and need to train HARD for each event to move to the next performance level?

Last year was my first year as well.  I just competed in an indoor tri last weekend, 15 minute of each SBR.  I did the same one last year.  My distance for the each event was longer.  So I felt that showed improvement.  I'm looking forward to another race to have something more to compare it to.

Way ahead for me. I started last winter too after getting too lazy about cardio. Couldn't really run at all and didn't own a bike. Bought TI and taught myself to swim. Now, I actually have a real base to work from beaded into this season (except swimming but at least I know I can swim a mile pretty easily instead of 50 meters like last February). Really not comparable for me.

I'm still old and slow, but I'm faster than last year.  When I started training for the 1st race (June 2009)  I #1- couldn't swim and #2- couldn't ride a bike.  Now I can do 15 miles on bike pretty easily, and 1500 meters in the pool.  My running is about the same!

I'm on the sideline with a bad back.  Last year I had a Half Mary and a Marathon done by the end of Feb.

Last year at this time, my second HIM was coming up in 10 weeks.

This year, my second IM is coming up in 10 weeks.

So I'm in roughly the same state of general anxiety...spread over more miles per week...

Little early...we are only 45 days in.

Guess it also depends on how you define the parameters.  For me, my running is much better.  My cycling has focused on intensity.  But I am WAY behind on volume from last year.  That is mainly due to a January training camp last year.  So these comparisons often aren't apples to apples without more data.

Still a long way to go this year, but last year this time I had just returned from 13 months in Afghanistan, so this year is definitely better.  Plus, the early results are good:

First race of the year: 1st place Overall

First marathon of the year:  PR

Let's hope the trend continues....

I hadn't even started training by this time last year, so that's good!I would consider this year to be a success so far. I was plagued with ITBS problems last year and never got it resolved... ended up taking 5 months off before I started training again and now the problems have seem to gone away! I ran twice as far today than longest run last year, very exciting for me! As long as it stays that way, my first HIM should be fantastic

And congrats on the race Andrew!!!

I'm still in my first full year of triathlon but this is far from the off season for me.  The USAT Collegiate National Championships are in 9 weeks.  Steelhead 70.3 is still a long ways off though.

No I don't feel ahead of last year but my A race is 9 months away so what is today it isn't important.

I do wonder about my sanity why did I sign up for April 70.3 living in MA? I haven't ridden my bike longer than 70' for a long time. Hope to ride outside tomorrow going to be in the 30s

Training for the same HIM in May as last year, with a half marry in 5 weeks or so (first one in 4 years and only 3rd one ever), so the season is underway for me :-) Still haven't done much outside riding but at least I rode the trainer this winter (didn't have one last year). My volume was up significantly from Jan 09 to Jan 10, and Feb is looking solid so far. Now I just need a solid March and April to be in a good place for the HIM at the beginning of May.

All depends when your races are. For me I have my A-race in May so not that far out. For you I imagine you are targeting some silly race in October, so Feb is VERY soon. :-)

I know exactly how I felt this time last year:  Scared sh^tless about getting through an upcoming 500m pool swim.  So yeah, this year is better from that standpoint.

Interesting question.  I have been struggling with this a lot lately.  Last year I trained specifically for tri's and by the summer I was 172 lbs and fast as hell (I'm 6 Ft).  I was running under 7 min miles and averaging over 21 mph on the bike in hilly NH.  I feel like I could go all day, I did a half IM and do i dare say it wasn't that hard.  However, to the average person I was "skinny".

So.....

This year I have concentrated on "looking" like I was more in shape.  My priority has been in the gym and SBR have taken a back seat.  I still do them but only after I get my gym workouts in.  I have found often times my SBR workout suffer simply because I am to tied to put in the necessary work.  I am currently 187 LBS and definitely "look" better than i did at any point last year.  But truth is I am in no way even close to where I was at this time last year.

I guess it just comes down to what your goals are.  I am still struggling with mine.

Last year was my first season and I began training for a May sprint on Jan. 20. I finished with 3 sprints and an Oly in the inaugural season.  On tap in 2010 is an April 70.3 and several sprints and hopefully another Oly. I'm definitely in better shape (down about 25 pounds compared to this time last year), and I think I've finally overcome my hatred for running.

Here's my numerical comparison from Jan-Feb '09 vs. Jan.-Feb. '10 (at least the first 18 days of Feb.)

2009 Swim- 11225yd / 2010 Swim - 43950yd
2009 Bike  - 170.9mi / 2010 Bike -  152.53mi
2009 Run  - 26.22mi / 2010 Run - 81.46mi

I think consistency in training is key in maintaining fitness or at least not dropping off substantially. I didn't do much biking or swimming in the offseason, but I did have a run-focused plan to help improve my weakest discipline. I was running 3-4x per week in my offseason. Once I got back in action this year it took me a couple weeks to return to form in the pool and at least that long to get the bike legs back as well.

I ran more miles from 01-01-10 to 02-15-10 than I did in ALL of 2009. I am hoping to get a 100-mile month this year. I didn't do 100 miles in ALL of last year.

However, I also had almost 130 hours of backpacking and hiking last year, and I'm only at 12-ish this year. Most of that comes in the summer with the extended trips, but I do wish I had more time in my boots already this winter. Planning to rectify that in a few hours!

And, there's that little thing about being in the middle of a really nasty chronic illness and having no idea what was going on last year. Right about now I saw the first shadows on the CT and it would be a couple months before I would see the lesions all over my brain on an MRI. So, um, yeah, I'm pretty happy that at least I can still usually drive safely this year, walk without falling over, etc. And that I have a much better idea of what's going on when I *do* have symptoms instead of just feeling scared sh*tless.

Yeah.. but at this time last year I was running 10 minute miles, 2:10/100, while now I'm running about 7:30's at the same HR and swimming 1:40/100 or better.  I wish I could compare my bike pace but with so much indoor training it's kind of hard.

Last year at this time I was breaking down football game film of our offense and defense and trying to find out what we did well and what went not so well so as to improve in those aspects.
Analizing what our opponents do on offense and defense to try and find weaknesses there to attack.
Attending clinics to improve our drills and skills etc....

So that being said I am head and shoulders ahead of where I was last year at this time!
I am really enjoying what I am doing now after being away for so long.
I look forward to next year to being able to compare this year and next.
