I have been looking over some of your logs and I see some impressive gains.  So if you can remember, please post your improvements year over year for an event; marathon, IM, Oly.

I ask becasue I am a reasonably fit dude training for a sub 4hr first mary but still dreaming of what training can bring on later trys.

I went from 15:06 to 13:51 in the Ironman competition.   Thats my best improvement.  Realized that you walk the aid stations and than get moving forward in some short of shuffle instead of walking.

My first marathon was 4:34, the one I ran this year was 3:26. There was a 5 year spread between those races. The marathon I ran last year was 3:55, same course this year was 3:26. That's a 29 minute improvement in a year. The main difference is this year I logged much higher mileage - over 900 miles the first 3 months of the year, vs last year when I basically used a "canned" marathon plan calling for maximum mileage of about 45-50 miles/week, with most weeks much less. I used the canned plans for my first 6 marathons and never came close to my time goals in the races. IMO, if a person is not blessed with speed the canned plans do little more than get you to the finish.

First marathon finish was a disastrous 3:58 (Baltimore '05).  The next year I did it with a friend as his pacer and as a long slow day and we did 3:57 (Baltimore '06).  Six weeks later I ran a 3:12 and my first BQ.

I took 42' off my IM time this year. Went from 10:16 to 9:34 (both at IMWI).

Marathon: I went from a 3:27:41 (Baltimore 2006) to a 3:22:00 (Lehigh 2007) to a 3:11:44 (Baltimore 2007).  Lehigh and Baltimore were 6 weeks apart.

My biggest time cut was also at the Racine HIM:

I went from 6:12 to 5:48, mostly because I figured out a HIM isn't an Oly and you need to approach it MUCH differently.

I've only done 1 tri --a sprint in Aug 07. I will be doing my 2nd --a HIM in 2 wks.

But I can share my running imporvements.  I started running at 27 and ran a half marathon 6 months after I started running in 2 hours. Then 2 kids and 7 years later (at age 34)I ran my first full in 4:08. A year later I ran my 2nd full in 3:42. I am 37 now and I ran a PR last year of 3:37 in the full and a hair under 1:37 for a half marathon. So in 10 years I have taken 23 minutes off my first half marathon time and in 3 years I have taken 31 minutes off my full. I hope to take more time off of both this fall.

Steelhead HIM: '07bike= 19.5mph, '08bike=21.4mph;  '07run=2:03, '08run=1:48 (there was no swim in '08).

Just finishing up my second season, so EVERY race is pretty much an improvement!  That being said, my hard work has shown results.  The most measurable since it's the same course and similar conditions --

Blue Lake Sprint:
Year 1 - 1:44:11
Year 2 - 1:28:23

i suspect it's going to be next year, when i participate in the same tri that was my first (this year in april).

i completed that darn tri in close to 3 hours, and bet i'll complete it in half the time or better next year...

did that make sense?

My first race was a 300 meter pool swim and I did it in 8:30.  A year later was 5:30.  The rest of the race was about 2 minutes faster.  I am by far most proud of the swim.

Between 2007 and 2008, I took 14 minutes off the same Oly course, and 25 minutes off an "almost HIM" course (1/34/10), 16 of that on the 10 mile run alone

Rick, I think there are laws in some jurisdictions against using the word "disaster" in a sentence that refers to a sub-4 marathon finish.

Just saying...

I've done two marathons to-date:

LA Marathon 2007: 4:56
LA Marathon 2008: 3:55

More than 1 hour better...amazing what happens when you actually train for something...

Also improved my 5K PR...all of these set in the same race, as it happens...from 20:52 in '06 to 20:31 in '07 to 20:02 this year...pretty happy with that improvement as well.

I suppose it's my first open marathon to my second. I ran the 2006 Phoenix RnR Marathon in a painful 3:33. 12 months later I ran a much better prepared 2:59.

I took about 16 minutes off of a sprint tri time (400m, 14mi, 5k on the same course) from my first ever tri two years ago, to the same race this year. This years was after a full 24 weeks of IM training and a week post IM, but I felt great and just went as hard as I could.

First Marathon in March of 2006: 4:31:29
Seventh Marathon in December 2007: 3:20:34 (Boston Qualifying Time)

In 7 Marathons, I took off ~70 Minutes to achieve a BQ (My main goal) over 20 Months

You are probably looking for longer distance events than a sprint for comparison, but I shaved off 29 minutes 24 seconds from my first tri ever to the same race the 2nd time around this year.

I put a table in the thread below my race report comparing last year to this year.

Race Report

Doing my first HIM this Saturday and I'm interested in what people's improvement curves have looked like as they went beyond their first year of training as well. I know I won't be able to come close to the percentage improvements I saw over the first year, but it would help a great deal with goal setting to see what other people have been able to accomplish as they continued training into years 2, 3 and beyond.

I don't have races to compare, but I have average times.

March 2008 (first month of tri-training)

Swim - 3:00 per 100 yards
Bike - 14 mph
Run - 11:30 minute/miles

Present (7 months into tri-training)

Swim - 1:40 per 100 yards
Bike - 16.5 - 17 mph
Run - 7:35 - 8:35 minute/miles

Marloboro Sprint
'05 1:30:56
'06 1:14:48
'07 1:11:34

Mooseman Oly
'05 4:21 but swim was shorter so about 4:45 if normal swim length
'06 3:45
'07 3:23

10/05 first 5K 34:54
3/08 last 5K 26:47

3/06 first 1/2 Mary 2:37
5/08 same 1/2 Mary 2:12

Easier to get big number improvements when you start out really slow. 2006 was my best year as ever race I improved tons over previous year and even from race to race. Now improvements are smaller and harder to gain but sweeter too.
