Subject: Favorite family read-aloud books

We do a lot of read-aloud books at home and audio books on long drives.  My girls (6 and 8) really enjoy historical fiction, but like some fantasy stuff too.

We have read a few in the last year or so we've really enjoyed that are either "new" or that I didn't read as a kid:

Belle Prater’s Boy by Ruth White

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly

The Melendy and Gone-Away Lake books by Elizabeth Enright

Birchbark series by Louise Erdrich

What read-aloud books have your families enjoyed?

My son is 10 and currently we are reading "Little Farmer Boy" By Laura Ingalls Wilder. It's fun to read and talk about what life was like for a little boy over a hundred years ago.

We were on a road trip recently and listened to the audiobook of "The Lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe".

We haven't done The Lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe yet, but they do love The Chronicles of Narnia movie.

We read Farmer Boy earlier this year, well, the whole LHOTP series.  My kids are obsessed with it:)  My 6yo is "sweet on Almanzo" lol, though Billy from Where the Red Fern Grows is very high on her list.

How do you do the read alouds with the kids?  Do you take turns reading with the kids reading some?  Parents do most/all of the reading?

These are books that my husband and I read to the kids.  We also have the kids read to us, but different books.

I don't know if you guys are just being funny, or if you really did do this as read aloud.  Either way, right on.

My husband and I don't watch TV, and before kids we would actually read books aloud to each other at night.  Micheal Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma, which was instrumental in how we have developed our farm, and Gary Paulsen's Winterdance was another favorite of ours.  We also had a world map in our bedroom and would play what we called "the geography game" which had a few different iterations, but basically we'd pick two countries and then would have to say each country you'd have to travel through to get from point A to point B in the most direct route.  Not quite 50 Shade of Grey, but we enjoyed it;)

Dang, I missed the editing window.

Just had to add that the geography game is played as a quiz, so the person answering the question isn't looking at the map--just in case anyone wanted to try playing.  I know, I know, you were all rushing to your maps and globes...

:)

I try to just embrace my dorkiness.

Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

OK, seriously? We are in a riddle phase. Good for the brain, and it's kind of funny how competitive we've all gotten.

Elements of Style is my favorite grammar book.  I had all of my students buy it when I was teaching comp.

I think your riddle practice shows in your witty posting;)  Is there a book of riddles you recommend?

I was given a copy by my thesis advisor who at one point told me I owed him a box of red coloured pens. Yes, he's English, and changed everything to "the correct" spelling.

We get them off of the internet. Instant gratification, you know.

We've been reading this great science fiction book called The Search for WonLa. I haven't read it before and I'm enjoying it as much as my son is.

We've also really liked Watership Down, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Adventures of Hugo Cabret as read-aloud books.

We like to listen to books on trips as well.  Even the dogs like to hear the stories!  We have all liked:
The Kane Chronicles Trilogy
The Lost Hero
39 Clues for quick and easy listening

Nothing too philosophical or long for us with a car full of ADHD people.

Watership Down is one of my all time favorites, so much so that I probably read it to the kids at too young an age.  Oh well, have to read it again;)

We have not done either a A Wrinkle in Time or The Adventures of Hugo Cabret.  The Search for WonLa --neither one of us have heard of this.

Good additions to our will read list.  Thanks :)

since you mentioned audiobooks - have you heard about the YA Sync Literature program? it is winding down for the summer - but each year they do like an 8 week period where they pair a current newer release with a classic for free download - I've gotten some good ones this way - they are more towards the older YA side for the most part - but something to keep your eye on maybe

no problem - i'm a total audiobook junkie - if I come across anything that could be interesting i'll let you know

I loved the audio book of Calpulnia Tate - the narrator is a favorite of mine

you could try Moon Over Manifest - by Clare Vanderpool - it is set in Kansas in the 1950's with flashbacks to the 1930's/1940's - it was a Newberry Award Nominee (IIRC) so aimed for the younger audience - I have a review of it somewhere
