Subject: Which Discipline For Weight Loss

Any opinions on which discipline (S,B,R) is best for weight loss/toning?  I am guessing running is probably best, but being 10-15 lbs. overweight makes running hard on the knees, joints, etc.

Any feedback?

Running.  You burn more calories per minute compared to swimming or cycling.

I honestly think a combination of all of them will help you best. Yes running does burn the most calories, but after awhile you body becomes used to same motion that it really does not help a lot. However, a combination of all tree gives your body a great workout and helps you lose more weight.

Running burns the most calories for the time spent.  But, as you noted, it's harder on your body so you can't do as much of it (especially if you are starting out).  So swimming or biking are great options.  Of those two, definitely 'easier' to burn more on the bike.

i would thinking biking.

I can bike 2 hours and feel great after.  not sure how long of a run would burn the same amount of cals....over an hour at least is my guess...

you may burn more with running per minute, but you'll be able to bike more than you can run.

I agree running seems to work the best for weight loss.  But the nice thing about tri is you don't have to run every day.  My legs just can't take the pounding, but  can still do something just about everyday with swimming or cycling.

That is one of the reasons many folks get into tri, it is natural cross training.

Doing something every day is better for weight loss than just running 3X a week.

Your body will get used to the pounding as well just watch how quick you increase your mileage.

All of them work.  Biking because you can go for a long time.  Running because its the highest HR/exersion.

But don't underestimate swimming.  Yes, you don't get quite as high of HR.  But your body burns a lot of energy keeping warm.  There's a reason you're often ravenous after swimming and thats because you've burned a lot of energy to stay warm.  You lose heat 25 times faster in water than air.

Cycling has been working great for me, but it works mostly the bottom end of your body/lungs.  Running is a great all-around workout and will help you lose weight/work your body all over - especially the mid-section.

Run more.

All of them combined along with proper nutrition.

(But running burns the most the fastest as mentioned).

Well, ANY of those are great if you are eating the right amount of calories.

Running and biking will burn more calories though.

I have to say that last year, while training for my Ironman... I got the best looking legs of my life from all the cycling I was doing! Probably the running too!

BUT I gained weight, because I wasn't eating properly and taking in probably mostly all fat and carbs, very little protein (vegetarian).

If you can't run, go for cycling. You can get great legs... but you do have to ride a lot. Riding 2 or 3 times a week w/20 miles a session won't do it.

To answer the question, running.

But do all three as much as you can it keeps the training varied and interesting.

Riding a lot has always made weight loss easier for me.  For toning, a consistent combo of all three does the trick.  Riding makes my legs look great, running improves my core, and swimming is great for the upper body.

The leanest I've ever been has been when my running volume was the greatest... as long as I was doing interval work and not just slower longer distance runs.

But I burn close to the same amount of calories per hour doing each. That being said, I take in far more calories on the bike than I can on the run, so I end up with a better deficit running.

And running, especially in the heat, kills my appetite for hours after...

It won't if all you do is putt-putt around town (although even that is better than nothing). It will if you incorporate intervals or hills. It all comes down to effort. Work hard, and you will burn more calories than if you don't work hard (assuming equal exercise durations). But be careful about working hard too much too often. You can't burn a lot of calories if you're stuck on the couch in Ace wraps and ice packs.

Rowing! Sometimes I wish I could find that article again, a teammate in college had a subscription to, I think, Mens Health. it was in 2003 I think and in doing research it found that rowing burns the most calories. It is also non impact, and utilizes the whole body (legs mostly, arms, shoulders back core, chest etc...) The only things I think that might burn more calories is cross country skiing but not sure on that part.

Anyway in answer to your actual question a good combination of all three disciplines is your best bet. Your body will not settle into one set metabolic rythm that way, easier to avoid injury, and you wont get as bored. Also throw in some good core workouts 2-3 times a week and some healthy eating habits and you can start loosing weight in a healthy manner.

Good Luck

(speaking of which I need to hop back on the weightloss bandwagon!)

chasing3 - 2009-07-15 11:04 AM best exercise for weightloss: restraint at the table.

I was just getting ready to post something similar.

All of the right "exercise" will do you no good if it isnt paired with appropriate choices in eating.  Granted appropriate eating will only get you so far without exercise but you can't exercise for weight loss with out making the other effort.

That being said, I have lost 40lbs with my Triathlon workouts. I have been a runner only for a short time (2.5 years) but never watched my food. I started my weight loss journey in November 2008 and started tri training in January 2009. The three sports have all helped me in different ways. Yes running is the best for burning calories but to be honest my running mileage has dropped drastically once I start tri training but the weight loss did not slow.

Best of luck for whichever method works best for you!

If you nail your macro targets either one works well.

I burn close to the same either biking or running, but can bike more than I can run.

Oh and 10-15 lbs shouldn't make a major difference on your joints unless you've got an underlying problem, 30lbs is a different story.

I think that combining the three is the best bet, especially for someone with joint issues.  As mentioned above, you can keep your volume of cardio activity higher as biking and swimming give your joints a break from the running.  Swimming may not be the highest calorie burner, but you can also jump in and do a swim when your lower body needs a recovery day instead of missing a chance to burn any calories at all.

The older we get, the more diet dictates body fat.  Without a good diet, it may be difficult to achieve your desired body comp.

Lastly, why not toss in some weight training?  Many people find it to be a necessary component for fat loss along with the cardio training and healthy diet.
