Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread

I won't be racing next year, but I'm going to lurk around here - after checking in on the Cd'A thread everyday for the last year, I've really missed it during the last month.

I'll be there participating in 2014! I'm excited for my first IM will be in front of the home crowd.

I am IN. Just finished the registration. This will be my 4th year in CDA. It will be a blast.

I will be back in 2014 for my second race in Coeur d'Alene and third IM overall. 2011 was my first CdA. That was the year of the very cold water (not fun), but also the 300-page CdA thread on BT (very fun). In 2012, I did the last full IM St. George when the wind went crazy. I took this year off from IM racing and have missed it all year so I'm excited to get back to it.

Not officially in, but should be pulling the trigger w/ in a couple weeks. This will be my 3rd IM, St. George 12, Texas 13. Both were awesome for different reasons and both had weather conditions that affected me some.

In for 2014. This'll be my 6th Ironman, all in CDA. Looking forward to another fun race.

I'm in for IM # 2, first CdA. Arizona '12 was my first. As I told some friends, not sure what was more intimidating, signing up for the first, when I didn't know what to expect, or the second time, when I do have at least some idea of what is to come! But, looking forward to it. I loved the journey the first time, and looking forward to making the journey again.

Wish i had the future knowledge of what the race day temp and conditions looked like, then that would decide if i were signing up or not. Late june could equal 100 degrees... i don't wanna do that .

What a tough entrance into IM racing! I'm sure Texas made you melt as well. Hopefully, you can get some sane weather at CdA next year.

It sounds like we had a very similar day and outlook, Tom. I was also feeling good going in and looking for a low 11-hour time, swam 1:37 with all of the waves, got through the bike slow and steady, but feeling alright and ran ok until I had to walk miles 15-17. I wound up at 12:21. I didn't feel bad about that as I heard over and over from multi-ironman finishers that it had the hardest race conditions they had seen and most people were an hour to 90 minutes off their expectations. I completely agree about St. George. I was amazed at how truly supportive the community was plus I just liked the city and what can you say about the scenery? Incredible. I wish they had been able to keep the full distance race, but I would like to get back there to do the 70.3 some day.

So does anyone know why they are pushing it back a week this coming year? Something else changing for WTC that they don't want to have two events in one weekend? Typically from what I have seen, always been the 3rd week in June but this time the 4th weekend?

I'm not going to do IM CDA this coming year. 2013 was my first. this coming year will be concentrating on 70.3 distance and family time. I plan on doing vacations for the 70.3s.

I'll be lurking here and giving my opinion of things.

For starters I don't think there has been more of an ideal IMCDA ever. Good temps for start of race, warm water, minimal wind on the bike course, and not overly hot for the run course. I was able to stay cool the whole time.

I thought it is usually the fourth weekend in June and this year was the one out of step with it being the third weekend. For instance, the year I did it, 2011, it was on the fourth weekend (June 26) and in 2012 it was the fourth weekend (June 24). Maybe the way the calendar fell this year just made the fourth weekend too late (would have been June 30)?

Regarding the weather - I know! After having a cold year in 2011, I've been kicking myself for missing out on this year's wonderful conditions. Kudos to all of you who did it and scored the weather lotto.

Good luck with your 70.3s and family time in 2014. I did the same thing in 2013 although I have yet to do even a 70.3 as I've kept all of my races shorter and local or regional with minimal travel.

Well, my big brother Stan (Flyboy) talked me into this mess! So I'm in for 2014. This will be my first IM and I haven't raced a tri since 2008. Spent the last several years raising kids, working too much and taking care of life's responsibilities in general.
I'm so stoked to be back in the "mix" with IMCDA on the horizon! Looking forward to watching everyone's progress as we march towards June 29, 2014.

On the topic of pushing the race back 1 week MAY pose a problem... The week after the race this year was the worlds largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in Spokane called Hoopfest. Something to keep in mind for those who are wanting to secure a hotel for the weekend... They may fill up much faster than pervious years.

I booked at the Holiday inn off I90. Stayed there this last year for the race and it was real nice. They has food each morning and night. Even early morning food on race day. Also a shuttle to and from the race for those who wanted it. Was not in a bad spot. Close to the trail so you can get in a ride or run. The hotel also had welcome packages for athletes and pictures in the lobby. They made it a little more fun. little pricy but was nice. Years before we stayed cheaper and it was ok but hotels were worn down and not as welcoming. If my son had his way we would stay at the Holiday inn connected to the triple play. Agreed though with hoop fest being June 28 and 29 2014, there will be a lot going on that's for sure.

Well, that will certainly be quite an entry back into triathlon! Of course, with such a good guide, I'm sure you will both have a fantastic experience. I bet that will be great fun racing with your brother. Happy training!

I did it this year and loved it. The town and everyone in the vicinity was awesome. The people on this forum were an invaluable resource. I cannot thank them enough. Eric, Stan, Trevor and anyone else I'm forgetting.
On the hotel side. I stayed at the Residence inn in Spokane Valley and it was $90 a night and only ~20 minutes to the race site. Really an easy commute to save money. Also on the Centennial trail so you can ride or run to get short workouts in.
Lastly I'll say an 11/28 cassette is a good idea. Good luck and have a great race day.

I'm trying not to get too excited too early for this race, but really looking forward to getting back to Ironman training. I really enjoyed being so focused last time around, so excited to give it another go.

I currently run a 53-39/12-25 but have been thinking about going to a 12-27 or 28 for this race. Sounds like that might be a good call.

My friends sort of laugh at me that I've already made my hotel reservations, but figure they are hard to get, so why not? Staying at the La Quinta Inn and Suites on Sherman. Should be fun to be in center of the action.

One more HIM for me this season, then a little rest, before ramping up prep for CdA!

Anyone who knows the area knows that getting your hotel now is the best option. It's an excellent location for training when you get here since you will be right on CDA LK Dr. And that's the small loop for the bike and a majority of the run.
