Subject: Garmin Integration - Phase 1

Phase I is live: EVERYONE can now upload routes to the Route Tracker from their Garmin device.

Here's how:

  • Connect your Garmin to your computer.
  • Click on the button at the bottom left of the Route Tracker labelled "Upload from Garmin Device".
  • A new window will display with a message up top. You may be prompted to download the Garmin Communicator plugin. This is required for communications from BT to the device.
  • If the Communicator Plugin is installed, a "Found" message will display in the window.
  •  Click on "Get Data"
  • Once the data from the device is read, a dropdown list will display and the first route found in the list will be plotted on a mini-map.
  • Select the route you want to upload to the route tracker in the dropdown list and click on "Upload to RouteTracker". This step may take a minute or so, depending on how long the route is and how many points are being uploaded.
  • Once it's uploaded, save it as you would any other route and you're good to go!

A couple notes:

Make sure that your device is set to Smart Recording. If it isn't there will probably be far to many data points on any route to be able to upload it.

Let us know in this thread if you experience any problems.

For now, it's routes only. We're working on uploading workout data and hope to have it available in a few weeks.

Thanks marmadaddy. I noticed this feature, but it doesn't work with my Forerunner 301. It records data as fitness data not as routes.

Oops! Didn't see that last line....  Embarassed

This will be awesome! I haven't had a chance yet to test it out as I am trying to get my Garmin to work on my Linux laptop with Wine. I know it isn't designed to work with it but I was/am hoping....

I am having a bit of a problem when I upload routes from my Garmin.  It adds a bit to the route in the form of a straight line at the starting point.  I've saved the file in my routes under Garmin Problem.  It was a bike of roughly 51 miles but saved it as 54.  You can see the part that was added at the start.  Am I doing anything wrong???

Just stumbled across the feature the other day. Used once for my new Forerunner 305 and it worked great. Now - when you add in the ability to import the workout stats too that will be fantastic. I'd rather keep everything in one site (namely BT) than having to jump around multiple sites or software for all my data.

One additonal thought. Please don't make the same mistake as the Motionbased site which does not currently allow import of indoor data (to be corrected with the launch of Garmin Connect). I would personally like to be able to load all my data, not just bits and pieces.

I'll be taking a look at this in the next day or so. I'm still getting settled in the new office.

Okay, I did all the steps (301 on a PC) and It gets my data, then after it gets to 100, it says no tracks found .

I am sad. What am I missing?

This indicates that there's no data on the unit. What does it show under 'History'?

There's about a year and a half of data on the unit. Motionbased and Garmin's own software picks it up. I'm not actually home to check the history, but I know from previous checking that I can look back to all the recorded events.

Could it be that as soon as I plug it in that the Garmin software sucks out the most recent event (that's an IT term - sucks out) and then there is nothing for the BT integration stuff to find?

Hey Mike,

Any chance this will at some point work with my Garmin 50 (Data transfer without maps)?

I'm currently working on uploading workout data, so that should work with the Forerunner 50.

The Garmin 50 uses the Ant Agent -- same as the Forerunner 405.  You'll probably have to completely re-write the data import to support it.

Fun stuff!

Very cool. As an added bonus...the map BeginnerTriathlete uses is more detailed than the one available with my Garmin 305 software (including updates).

Interesting. I biked today and wanted to import the route. I've done this in the past so I headed on into the route manager to do it. It tells me "The plugin was not unlocked success" which I assume means that somehow the plugin was not successfully located.

So I reinstalled the plugin and restarted my browser. I got the same results. I clicked the Garmin Display Page for Developers (link in one of your posts above) and it sees my Garmin and is able to open my routes. Go back to BT, nope.

Ideas?

I've had that happen a couple of times this week while working on the workout uploads (which should be ready for testing soon, like tomorrow). Try clearing your browser cache. It's cleared it up for me each time.

Hi Mike Great feature

I have however notice a small problem (maybe just me) when I upload a route the elevations gained is wrong ! When I put data into the Garmin training Center and Motionbased, they give me roughly the same numbers, but in Routetracker planner it is way off. I have my unit set to metric, but it looks like when the data is uploaded to the Routetracker, that it thinks the meters are actually feet, thereby making my elevations gain look pretty small. Just an insignificant problem compared to the coolness of being able to upload routes straight from the Garmin
