I have been experiencing my fingers going numb while taking on long bike rides..as well as my bum going numb to.  Very frustrating.  Having to stand up while biking from time to time or shake my hands to blood flow can give me that feeling back.  Has anyone else had this experience while biking..?

i used to when i mountain biked... it was because i was white knuckling the handle bars.. i learned to ride more relaxed, starting with the shoulders.. my grip loosened...no more numb hands..

evaluate your riding position.

I have adjusted my bike seat many times..going higher and higher each time.  I have a mtn bike with road tires on it.  Ive not steped up to a full out road bike just yet.  (funds not available for it yet.)  But if adjusting the height more would do it..then I guess I need to either relax more..or just move the seat.

As jesswah said, did you get a good bike fit?  It could do you wonders.  I have never had a problem except with some knee pain that started after i adjusted my seat from the fitting position.  after a few weeks, putting the seat back, the pain went away and i started to realize the value in a good bike fitting.

frstutrating to have pains or numbness.  i still get a numb bumb after 40+ minutes of sitting and stand to let the blood flow.

I have issues with my fingers going numb, but it's usually in colder weather.

On my road bike, yes. It happens at about the 1.5 hour mark. I've got to keep switching between brake hoods and top bars to put the pressure in varying places on my hands.

On the tri-bike, no. As long as I don't have a death grip on the bars even 3 hours is fine.

My fingers get tingly after hours in the sadle if I'm riding on the hoods/base bar a lot.  A good pair of padded cycling gloves works wonders for me.

Also, relax the hands a little and maybe stretch them once in a while on the ride.

That used to happen to me as well on my road bike.  I bought a pair of clip on aerobars and never had my hands go numb again.  Cost me under $50.  In your situation, I'd buy the bike first though.  I don't know what options you have until then.  Good luck.

You could try getting some new bar grips (is that what they are called on an mtb?) maybe with some extra padding and/or some padded gloves if you don't already use them.

I did, then I started trying to relax every muscle but my legs, helped a lot. I don't think there should be strain on your wrists while you ride.

its mostly my thumb and index fingers that go numb or get stingly.  I have paded gloves I do wear.  but I try to shift my hands around on the bar while riding.  I dont really hold on for dear life as Im only riding on a flat surface not hilly.  It usually doesnt act up till im at least an hour into the ride.  I figured I was leaning on them to much cutting of the curiulation to my hands by hand placement on the bar...  I even have a padded seat to make rides a bit more enjoyable but still my bum goes numb too.

Keep your elbows bent.  That should shift some of your torso weight back off of your hands.

Sound slike a littel early carpal tunnel..compresion of the median nerve at the wrist.  How about some aerobars?  Will take the pressure off the nerve and you get get some clip ons for not a lot of money...maybe $50

You are riding a mountain bike for an hour straight?  Wow!  Thats impressive!

Do you still have knobby tires and you are riding on roads?  I cannot imagine what an hour of that type of vibration could do to your extremities.

The problem with your mountain bike for long periods is that you do not have a lot of options for hand positions.  Normally, a mountain biking REQUIRES constant changing of pressure and body positions just to stay on the bike.  A road or tri bike also allows your hands to be in a really neutral position, while the straight bar on a mountain bike can put your wrist in an awkward position.

I got road slicks for my mtn bike this past summer so no i dont use the treaded tires anymore.  I ride on a asphalted trail they have in my town.  its generally flat.  As for the aerobars I am gonig to look into them..but i wont beable to afford a real road bike till after the first of the year...(the whole xmas thing with the kidoes)...  but im usually riding for at least an hour half to two hours on my mtn bike.

On a road bike, it would be a simple case of you putting too much weight on your handlebars. This would be fixed by a bike fit, but since you're on a MTB, it's not really worth it. You can try adjusting your seat angle (usually, tilting it backward) to put more weight on your rear. Depending on how your saddle works, this may be better.

Mine were goign numb after 45 minutes or so, by 2 hours it was real bad.  The LBS changed my stem from a 90 to a 110 and the problem went away.

I have diagnosed carpel tunnel.  Hand even goes numb shaving at times.  Several months ago I purchased Pro-Form Serfas grips for my mountain bike.  I was doubtful at first, but they have helped tremondously.
