So the economy car guys are having a love-in...

How about those of us who like our vehicles a bit bigger...

2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L (wife has a 4.7L Toyota Sequoia). Both get about 15 around town and 25ish on the highway. OPEC loves us... but...

1. I can pull a mountain (and often do pull a big trailer)
2. I can see over all those small cars in traffic
3. I do not worry about my small car being my final resting place if I get into an accident...
4. I put down the pedal and it MOVES...

Nothing against small cars (I used to own a couple tiny sports cars and still love to drive them form time to time) but for daily driving I really like my non-PC truck...

Actually I bought it (traded in another V8 truck) when gas was $4.25/gallon down here. I knew what I was doing and never complained about the cost of gas.

You get quite a deal on a big truck when gas is $4.25 a gallon.

How many times have you HONESTLY been off-roading. When I used to have my ol' Jeep CJ5 we'd do lots of off-road and only a couple times did I actually see people out there in SUVs, and those were usually other Jeep products.

Edit: I thought it said you could move up mountains, but now I reread to see it says you can MOVE mountains. My bad. I guess my theory is if you're going to waste gas, why not get a really fast car? SUVs are great to have to haul stuff (tri gear) but really, if I'm going to get 15 miles a gallon I best be in something that can do the 1/4 mile in less than 13.5 seconds.

Very few. But it's not an off road vehicle. It's not a 4x4. It's used for towing and hauling materials. Civic hybrids have a hard time pulling a 5000lb trailer.

I had a 71 vette too. That was the "fun" way to waste gas. Alas I sold it a few years back. It sucked at pulling a trailer too ...

I  my 2007 Toyota Tundra 5.7L.   Is very useful.  Lugs cars AND dogs at the same time!  Without making the inside of the vehicle smell bad!

But I like commuting in my fuel-efficient Honda.

Just got an '03 GMC Sierra SLT 1/4 ton 4x4 this winter. I need something to get around in the snow and haul stuff for my business. I have my motorcycle I ride when it warms up to save on the gas.

Give yourself a bit more credit...it's a 1/2 ton.

I miss my 05 Silverado Z-71 every now and then...but when gas was $4/gal, I wasn't towing anything, and wasn't working at a Chevy dealer anymore it just didn't make sense to drive.  Loved that truck, though.

I've got a 3/4 ton Dodge truck wedged in the garage that doesn't get driven much.  It goes to the dump about once a month and sometimes to the feed store.  That's about all I can afford to drive it.  But my dog LOVES that truck.  You can't even say the T-word without her going crazy.  Back in the day I used to show horses and that truck saw a lot more miles than it does now.

Porsche. There is no substitute. 0 to 55 in 3 1/2 seconds.

Yeah if you want to spend $120K for the 911 Turbo. My MR2 was better in the corners, anyway, and was no slouch on the straights. And I only had $20K in it, including the purchase price!

We then bought for 10K a used Forest Service truck with 69K miles on it - a 1999 - Suburban 2500 with the gas engine that I liked because it was all vinyl inside and you could hose the sucker out. It was that Forest Service green so it was impossible to not find it in a parking lot.

You're a brave man.  I went to school with some people who worked forest service as interns.  They aren't exactly nice to those trucks.

I drive a Dodge Dakota with a 3.9 V6 in it.  I get a whopping 15 mpg in the city, but it isn't exactly stock.  I also get horrid traction in the winter, but that's another story.

As soon as I'm settled in and have time to build it up, it's getting a built small block Chrystler.  I'm thinking a 360 or 408 with a huge lopey cam.

Not a truck, but I REALLY want to build up a T-bucket with a crazy flathead.  Either twin screws or quad meat-grinder 4 barrels.

My wife just doesn't understand

3. I do not worry about my small car being my final resting place if I get into an accident...

A small car is safer because it is nimble enough to avoid an accident. I don't like the argument that bigger cars are safer when they are more dangerous for everyone on the road.

That being said, I don't begrudge anyone having a big fuel inefficient car as I drive an FJ Cruiser and at <20 mpg it is hardly efficient and far from nimble. It can however get me to any remote beach without any worries and I love it.

hypocrite out.

I thought most of the small cars had pretty good safety results in an accident. They actually got bounced out of harm's way to an extent.

Nimble is not really a factor when you get plowed into while stopped at a stop sign, or t-boned becuase an idiot ran a red light. I'm going to put my family in the safest things I can...
