Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have never been much of a "morning person" and most of my workouts take place in the afternoons (except for maybe once a week or on weekends). I almost always start my workday with a cup of coffee to get me going in the right direction. As all of you know race day begins extremely early (for me at least) and I've always heard thacoffee before a race may not be such a good idea because the caffene can get your heart rate up, speed up your metabolism, etc...whatever... Does anyone have any opinions or straight up facts about the potential ups and downs to having a cup of coffee on the way to transition? |

![]() There's only 1 downside I can se... let's actually just call it "2" I pretty much think that your heart rate's gonna be up in a race whether you drink coffee or not. If you are a daily drinker I wouldn't think you'd notice increased HR etc |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you are a regular coffee drinker, a cup or two beforehand won't affect you at all. If you don't normally drink it (or other forms of caffeine), some studies have shown that pre-race caffeine can actually be a performance enhancement. |

If you don't normally drink it (or other forms of caffeine), some studies have shown that pre-race caffeine can actually be a performance enhancement. I had read that in the past. The article I just posted seems to debunk that. There's benefit...regular user or not. And caffeine does increase the heart rate and blood pressure in people who are not regular uses. “But after three or four days, that potentially negative effect is gone,” Dr. Tarnopolsky said. The beneficial effects on exercise, though, remain. Even if you are a regular coffee drinker, if you have a cup of coffee before a workout or a race, you will do better, Dr. Tarnopolsky said. “There is no question about it,” he added. |

I won't have it on the way to transition, but I damn sure won't leave home (or hotel) on race day or any day without my morning Joe. Wakes me up, gets me moving, and gets me moving. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am of the firm belief that I would die without a morning cup of coffee, race morning or not. And the "2" can be a huge benefit, as long as your cup o' joe is early enough. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() It has been suggested that a bit off caffein can help your performance. I make it part of my race prep. One cup of coffee before I leave the house. That also helps move stuff throught the 'system'. I'm able to get into the porta potty at the race site and "lighten the load" you could say... Plus the energy caffein gives is supposed to help with your race. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i normally drink coffee before workouts etc. in the morning, so nothing changes on race day. my body can handle the caffeine and it has been fine for both sprint and olympic distance for me. As long as you do it normally, race day shouldnt worry you, but i wouldn't do anything i havent done in practice on race day |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't have it before a race. It leads to insane post-race urination...as in 4 hours after I have the coffee I have to pee every 5 minutes. Happened to me during an Oly and I'll never do it again! After the race I had to keep walking into the lake to pee because I didn't want to go all the way to the porta potties. |

That's lightening the load! Unless you need to lighten the load in the middle of your race. Much more of a downside then. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry, no race experience yet, but coffee will be part of my plan. I would be lost without it in the morning. The problem I'm afeared of is the need to go #1 frequently. I am a slave to my bladder!! I am experimenting with a french press right now to get the right combination of intake vs the jump I need with the right taste. Before my early swims I grind up some frozen chocolate covered beans in my smoothie. Those tend to git me a little jittery though. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() morey1 - 2009-03-31 3:46 PM From 3/25/2009...caffeine can ENHANCE endurance performance... I'm no scientist but doesn't his success in 'guessing' when he took caffeine versus the vitamin C negate the whole blind testing thing? If he was not able to guess which pill he had taken and his results still showed significant improvement I would be more impressed. I know that caffeine is a stimulant and has an impact on my heart rate but so does exercising (racing). How I'm feeling at the starting line definately has an impact on my performance whether it comes from a cup of coffee or my own competative spirit. IMHO caffeine does not have a direct impact on my athletic performance but it does help me start the day! |

I paid the most attention to what Dr. Tarnopolsky (spelling?) and the other medical research concluded. I found the rowing "experiment" interesting but not central to my conclusion after reading the article. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Like the OP, I am not a morning person and always start my day with a cup of coffee. It is a habit. Coffee does make me pee but that usually is not a problem if I finish my coffee about an hour or more before the race and plan for one pitstop before the race. I also don't eat much in the morning and that led to a rookie mistake at a 5 mile race I did a few weeks ago. Coffee on an empty stomach can turn awfully sour and I had to throw it up mid-race. It cost me about a minute. A banana or cup of oatmeal with my coffee would have been the smart thing to do but I'm not the clearest is the morning. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been a coffee drinker for a long time. There isn't much I can do in the morning before the ole cup of java. I've run a couple of marathons and have made a point to get up early enough so I can have my cup of coffee and give it time to settle before the race. The way I see it, coffee is an essential part of my routine. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you normally drink coffe in the morning - drink it on race day.
It is not good to drastically change diet, habits or sleep 24 hours before a race. Your routine is what your body knows. Don't buck the system. I am a HUGE coffee drinker. Because I don't want to pee during an event I have a little less the morning of a race but I NEVER skip it. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Active.com just recently had an article on coffee and caffeine. They do a good job of mentioning which studies they pulled information from: http://www.active.com/nutrition/Articles/Caffeine-the-Ergogenic-Aid.htm?act=EMC-Active&Vehicle=Triathlon&Date=07_19_09&Edition=3&Sections=Articles&Creative=Caffeine__the_Ergogenic_Aid&TextName=Caffeine__the_Ergogenic_Aid&ArtText=Txt&Placement=3&Dy=Sun&lyrisid=20048444&dart=M I know I always drink a few cups before race day. It helps clear me out before a race too, if you catch my drift. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I love coffee, but I can't drink it. My body doesn't react well to caffeine anymore and my HR goes straight from zone 1 to 5 with minimal effort. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I throw back some serious coffee all the time and always before a workout or race. On long bike rides before my last climb I'm usually pretty much a zombie and so I stop and buy a couple Starbucks double shot lights which always give me a huge second wind. Don't know what it does to my HR as I don't monitor it nor do I care. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Coaching member | ![]() Race day is the only day I drink coffee. But I actually drink it AFTER the race. I find that by speeding up my digestion, it helps to clear out the toxins that have built up. It makes me feel better faster. No post-race headache. Also, the more I use the bathroom after a race, the faster I recover and feel better. So the coffee helps with that. I make my own post-race drink concoction. It's basically chocolate milk (soy or cow's) with coffee mixed in. I used to buy Bolthouse Farms mochachinno, but it costs $3.99 for a quart. I use milk from the fridge, Nesquik and day-old coffee and can make it for probably 50 cents. But drinking the Bolthouse after a 5-hour ride one day was what turned me on to the value of caffeine after a breakthrough workout or race. |
