Subject: HIM DNF - OK to wear the visor?
Last June I attempted my first HIM - Ironman Kansas.  I was poorly trained for the cycling, but I thought I would be ok.  I actually had a bad swim time, and was not prepared for the hills on the bike.  So, long story short, I missed the cutoff time for the bike.

I purchased a 70.3 visor at the expo that I really like, but I wonder (as does my wife) if I'm being a poser by wearing it out in public.

So, I pose the question to BT: is it OK to wear the visor or not?  I mean, I did at least toe the line, which is more than most sedentary people even dream about doing, but on the other hand, I did DNF.

I don't care what other people wear.

Would I wear it?  probably not, that's just my choice though

And I have DNF'd an IM, so I know the feeling.....

It's a perfectly good visor. Lots of people buy race-brand goodies for their spouses or supporters who didn't do the race at all, so in my opinion it's just fine to wear it!

What if you wear it, and think of it as inspiration? As in, "No, I didn't finish last time, but next time, I will!"

Also, as Yanti said, lots of people buy shirts, etc. For example, I've got one of these t-shirts, even though I've never been to France and I couldn't even make it to the top of Alpe Mickey Mouse (much less Alpe d'Huez):

I don't think there's any way I could wear it and feel comfortable, especially like someone mentioned if somebody were to ask or compliment you on the race.  What I would do though is hang it up right in plain sight in my room, so that every time I left for a workout I would be reminded of how bad I want to crush the race the next go around.  Good luck!

I would not wear it! Big difference in wearing an NFL jersy as a fan and a visor for a race that you did not finish.

Actually I may need to change my answer. If it's not "FINISHER" gear, then wear it all you want. You could have bought it by volunteering, being a relative - it's just a brand, like NIKE. And it will remind you of that day, good or bad.

I have IM socks, does that make me a poseur?

I would nail it to the wall in my garage - right above where I keep my bike.

I would probably wear it, but who am I to talk? I wear a tech long sleeve shirt for a marathon that I didn't even run because I was in "the boot"!

I do feel weird wearing it and it kinda of pours a salf on the wound (even after a year).

OH, no one as asked me "how did you do?"

The first year that Louisville had IMKY, I bought a cycling jersey as a gift for my then boyfriend.  Never thought a thing about it.  We went on a two day bike tour, and I packed the jersey for him for the ride back.  About every third person would ask him how he did in IM.  Needless to say he wasn't real happy with me.  I, however, found it hilarious!!

What else are you going to do with it?

Just wear the darn thing.

ETA: I have a shirt from a race I DNF'ed.  I still wear it without a second thought.

I think that fact that you purchased it also factors in. Because then it's not like a "medal." Say you'd gone as a spectator (who wasn't participating), and purchased the visor while you were there. Would you wear it?

Or.... say "Joe Couchpotato" went as a spectator and purchased it. Would you say to him, "Hey, if you didn't actually finish, then you need to return that?"

Of course, if wearing it makes you feel bad, you could always list it on the BT classified in the "Pay it forward" thread.

Here's how I would answer that question, " I missed the cutoff time for the bike.  But I'm going back again _______ year and intend to do much better."

That's the reason why I voted to not wear it.

IF someone were to ask about it... would you really want to have to respond that you DNFed and why you DNFed?

Eh... but honestly, people rarely if ever ask about the gear you are wearing... so it really probably would matter either way.

I personally would not wear it, simply because it would remind me what I did not do... but then again, it could be a great reminder to motivate me to train harder!

In the end, do what you are comfortable with doing. Either way, it's a nice visor.

I think it is fine to wear it, especially as it is not specific to one race...more advertisement of the sport than specific race souvenir.

Btw, nice visor :-)

I wouldn't be caught dead in a visor... I probably wouldn't wear a 70.3 t-shirt if I didn't finish the race, unless it was DNF by wicked cool bike wipeout from which I had excellent scars and possibly video evidence.

99% of the population probably has no idea what 70.3 even means. They probably think it's a radio station. It's just a hat - wear it!

What you do is up to you. You make the call.

Personally, I would not wear it. Personally, I believe it would grant bad luck; hence, why I would not buy anything like that before completing the race. However, that is just me, I'm OCD.

My suggestion like others have stated is to put it where you can see it every day for additional motivation to train. Then, when you go back and kill the course it will be that much sweeter to put on.

That one isn't specific to a finisher or a race.  I'd wear it.

I also plan on wearing the tshirt for the race I DNF this weekend.  If people ask, I'll tell them I wound up in the med tent, but I'm going to try again next year.  It doesn't really bother me.
