My first tri is on Sat!  Woot!  It's in Grantham, NH and the forecast is for rain.  I'm ok with swimming and running in the rain- it's the bike that worries me as I haven't trained in the rain with it.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

There are a few things I would do for a race in the rain:

* slightly lower PSI in your tires
* no hard braking (feathering them unless absolutely required to panic stop)
* avoid the painted lines

Good luck,

Shane

All of the above plus watch for railroad tracks try go close to 90 deg to them, avoid mud puddles if possible. Don't know how deep and could damage your wheels or result in an accident Take turns a little easier.

don't bother with socks on the bike (don't know what your plan was), because they will be soaked anyway

Just really go conservative on the bike...if you're not practiced at riding in the rain you really want to be careful...crashing would ruin your day.

Painted lines - They will be like ice.
Braking - hampered to non existent. Anticipate very early.
Cornering - Nothing really sharp at speed
Clothing - Wear something breathable, an airtight slicker and you WILL get overheated.
Visibility - It will be limited, wear light colored/clear lensed sunglasses if possible
Puddles - Avoid, they are hidden death traps (You can't tell depth)
Other riders - Avoid them, or give a wide berth when passing.

Just ride carefully and really try to listen to any warning signs your bike gives you.

Have fun this Saturday !

All of the above advice is good... just slow it down, take care on turns, and be very alert!

Bring an umbrella.  I thought everybody did this.

Wear eye protection. Assuming it's not sunny and raining... obviously you don't want dark lenses.  If you don't have interchangeable glasses with clear or light lenses, then wear a pair of safety glasses.  Most of my rainy rides I would have been blinded without eyewear.

I only make 3 adjustments in the rain...

1) Let a little air out of my tires. I'll run my clinchers at 120lbs on a dry / warm day, and let 10-20 lbs out for a wet day. Negligible impact on speed, but noticeable impact on sketchiness.

2) I avoid riding on lane lines, crosswalks, etc. The road surface should be fine, but anywhere you have painted areas it gets really slippery. The worst places are those big, thick crosswalks because 1) both your wheels will be on the painted area at once, and 2) they're usually at a corner, meaning you're turning. The double whammy.

3) I never ride through a puddle I can't see the bottom of. That's asking for it.

Oh, and ditch the sunglasses. They're more of a hassle to see through than letting your eyelids do what they're supposed to. And wash your bike when you get home. It'll be covered with oil, dust, grime and crap, even if it looks clean.

Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice! I'm really looking forward to finishing soaked and totally happy that I did my first tri.

Best tip I ever picked up was to bring along a small Rubbermaid container to put your running shoes in while you're out swimming and biking. At least you'll start out with dry shoes and that can make a huge difference!

Ok dry socks and shoes in a plastic bag inside your transition bag (or out if T1 and T2 are in same place).  If you are a slower biker, and the temp is going to be cooler and rainy, you may want to use a waterproof bike jersey.  At Boise 70.3 last weekend we had alot of folks pushing hypothermia due to being cold and wet for 3 hours on the bike.  A waterproff jersey would have kept them warmer and dryer.  I went fast enough that my work output kept my core temp warm enough untill post race, but if you are going to be more in zone 1-low 2, I might at least bring the rain jersey along.  And all that stuff they said above about no sharp turns on wet paint down steep hills 8).
