After seeing the wolf thread, wonder what type of wild animal you ever run into?

The worst I run into is a huge black snake sitting in the middle of a single track staring at me.

Funniest one I seen was duck crossing (end up being duck chasing when they decide to block my only path)

I saw a girl almost run into a deer yesterday while I was on a bike.  Scare the hell out of her!

I see a lot of rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, turtles, birds (life or dead).

Summer is here and once again i'm leaping an occasional rattlesnake on trail runs. Believe it or not, here in Southern California i've also seen deer, a mountain lion, bobcats, and coyotes.

I was within 5 feet of a skunk on a dark early morning run last week--didn't see it till I was just to the side of it.  I typically see some large jack rabbits, and when I saw the "shadow" of the animal in the street lamp, I figured that's what it was. I was wrong.  My already tempo pace dropped by 1.5 minutes and my HR went up about 8bpm as I got out of the area--rabbits, squirrels, chimpmunks, even dogs are something I've seen and know how to deal with, but skunks are unpredictable and that is NOT a problem I want to deal with.  You always lose in an encounter with one of those suckers.  On my ride this past Saturday, a skunk was on a bridge we were about to cross, and we had to back track a bit to let it go it's way--bridge wasn't wide enough to speed past it and be assured to avoid it's spray.  I've had a couple of other close-skunk encounters this year as well.  Skunks must be breeding like rabbits here in Texas this year...

not much exotic: squirrels, chipmunks, birds, ducks, geese, dogs and cats, coyotes, wild turkeys (they can be mean!), swans (they are very mean!), pheasant, blue heron, rabbits, raccoon, red foxes, and I believe I saw a beaver one time but my husband doubts it because he said I was too far away from water.

Almost every trail run I encounter at least 1 snake, usually a small corn snake. Once I encountered a 5ft long bull snake.

Last summer I ran into a coyote, but I was actually relieved because at first I only saw its back, and with its light tan coloring through the high weeds....I thought it was a mountain lion and I almost passed out.

I keep expecting to see a bear, they have been all over the place lately.

The not-so-average ones: coyote, fox, wild pig, bear, skunk, and of course, the drunk vagrant at the finish of the IM.

See the funny part is that you thought I was kidding. Read the last paragraph or so of my Hawaii race report. I got to finish with the town BUM. Yippee. It was exactly like I had dreamed running down Alii Drive!

The only gator I've seen near the road has been a dead gator thankfully.  Seen a bunch of foxes, shooed some geese off a kids tri course, seen an enormous buck, almost hit a doe, a bald eagle, a plastic bag full of kittens, tons of snapping turtles, and a few copperheads and other snakes.

Lots around here.

When I am walking, I often cross paths with skunks. I've been pretty good at spotting them and avoiding them though.

When riding through Stanley Park, I often have to stop for geese in the morning and raccoons at other points during the day.

When riding up Cypress Mountain, bears.

When riding down Cypress Mountain, deer. That's scary. I don't want a deer to run across my path.

When riding on the Cypress bike route, squirrels & chipmucks. Those things are unpredicatable.

When racing in Richmond, rabbits running across the course.

When riding towards a bridge where some land was being cleared for a housing development, a coyote.

When cooling down, near the dykes in Richmond, a beaver!

When riding in South Delta or Richmond, I see herons, but they are usually sitting at the side of the road, near a ditch, not in my path. The best wildlife encounter is a heron, for sure.

There's a fox that lives in the big park near me - I've seen him about 3 times. Once pretty close up.

In another park saw a beaver - also pretty close up as he dashed across the path as we were running. I *may* have seen one today on my bike - it was hiding in the grass and I zoomed by so i didn't get a really good look.

And in yet another park, during a half marathon a few weeks ago, we saw a deer.

Keep in mind that these parks are in the middle of a city of 3 million people. Always find it pretty cool.  You know, more interesting that all the pigeons, squirrels, raccoons and geese that I see nearly every day!

I see coyotes pretty frequently.  I have also seen wild donkeys when I train at Lake Pleasant.  The most unsettling wildlife encounter I have had was a rattlesnake crossing the trail in front of me during a race (also at Lake Pleasant).  I decided that it was worth sacrificing a couple of minutes of time to allow it to cross the trail and move on...

A peacock!  So very loud and bizarre sounding.  About scared the crap out of me!  Sounds like a mixture of like a cat being tortured, a child screaming, and a really loud bird.  I did not know what the eff was going on and my HR shot up to about a million thanks to that stupid thing.

Nothing too wild here.  I've seen a coyote walking around.  My biggest scare was actually a couple of days ago on a descent going about 40 when two deer ran out in the road right in front of me.  If they didn't run back just in time after I screamed at the top of my lungs I would have been FUBAR...

My brother-in-law ran into a deer on Saturday while riding.  Broken clavicle, 3d degree shoulder separation.  Given that he lives in Western New York and the summer season is short, he's not a happy camper right now.

The norm; deer, rabbits, geese, ducks, chipmunks.

In a tri this past Saturday, on the bike course a volunteer was in the road directing us to the left hand lane. It looked like a large, dead dog in the road right on the center lines. When I got closer, it was a 100 lb or so snapping turtle. Dadgummed thing was huge!

I ran into a fox with a chicken in it's mouth a while back...

squirrels, chipmunks, birds of prey, turtles (I had to hop over one to make sure I didn't flip my MTB), feral cats, swarms of insects, snakes, wild pigs and deer (arizona), and even a few coyotes.

my favorite were the wild pigs. i thought they were bears at first.
