Subject: Had a blast at my first Tri..but was I wrong?
So after I drug my butt out of the water and got workin on my first bike lap, I started talking to people who were racing along with me. Just small stuff, go get 'em's, man this is hard, ect...and I did the same on my run. ( I even told some people that it was a great day to be alive and they agreed!) Now, I know this probably added a few more minutes on my race time but I was having such a great time racing, I couldn't help but share the love! And I still finished under my goal time....

My question is...since everyone else seemed so serious and NOT talking or commenting...was I wrong for jabberin' along? I mean, I didn't make anyone stop and talk to me or anything but it certainly seemed as if I was the ONLY one with a gigantic smile on my face for most of the race...
Did I exhibit poor triathlon manners? lol

I don't think so !

I get passed A LOT (read: by everyone) on the bike, but I'm a decent runner, so I pass a few people on the run.  I usually say stuff like "looking good" "looking strong" "one more mile" etc.  The last race I did - an Oly - was an out and back run ... and the overall third woman finisher passed me and said something like "looking strong!" I really appreciated it.

(I think a single encouragement is a lot different than "so, what do YOU think about the president's views on health care?" )

Not bad manners in my book

Were you FOP, MOP, or BOP, and did you use a bucket?

I am usually working too hard to chit chat, but nothing wrong with it (as long as you don't get pizzed when I don't reply).

Congrats on your first!

See, I was just reading another's post and was guessing at the meaning of FOP, MOP, and BOP. Is it...front of pack, ect.??

The only time I had anything but a positive/neutral response was in an Oly last year. I passed a 12 yo girl on the bike and tried to tell her she was doing great and to keep working hard.... she glared at me like I was some evil person....then interestingly, she had the same mean look on her face as she blew by myself and a whole bunch of people on the run.... I don't think you were wrong, unless of course you started asking people questions like "how ya doing, what do you do for fun, come here often, or what's your sign?"

At my first tri, I spent some time talking with people in transitions (I had some 5 and 6 minute transitions so go figure), along the bike route (on a mt bike and the chain fell off twice so again more time to talk), and on the run (an out and back course, and everyone who had passed me on bike or run said nice things to me).  I had a great time, and appreciated the camaraderie.

However, in my second and third tri, I was working too hard to talk to people along the way.  Just some smiling and nodding.  And I was definitely faster without the chit chat.  But nothing wrong with having some fun.

I'll occasionally give/receive some brief words of encouragement to other participants. I do have one absolute no-no:

"Almost there!"

Unless the finish line is literally within sight, this is simply not true. I had a spectator say this to me about 1/4-mile into the 5k run portion of my last tri. I'm sure she meant well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the comments that were made to me at my first Tri.  Just comments like, "Doing great!" or "Keep it up!"  Made me feel good that it was such friendly competition.  They say Triathletes are the friendliest people, and they truly are! (Unless they use a bucket).

I did have another BTer ask me how I was doing (as she was about to pass me).  I didn't mind at all; I enjoyed the brief banter.  Ironically, one of the photos taken was of me talking over my shoulder to her!  At least the photo was taken BEFORE she actually passed me.

Not really but PLEASE don't pull up alongside people on the bike and set in for a chat.  That's just going to get one of you a penalty.  I had someone do that to me at a race repeatedly and it drove me NUTS.  She kept coming up alongside me so technically I would have to fall back but instead of continuing to pass she just wanted to hang there and chat.  And didn't get the hint when I dropped back out of earshot.

SUPER annoying.

Yeah I know that when I do my next one, I'm going to be more focused on what I know I can improve on but during this race, being it my first, I knew nothing but my training (and I felt very prepared going in, not nervous at all).

I know that next time, I'll care more about the amount I can improve my times rather than being all giddy that I'm actually doing it!

Oh NO, I so did not set in for a chat. I would only say brief things as I was passing them.

If you're riding alongside them chatting for any significant time (15 seconds), you're violating the anti-drafting rules.

I have no problem giving a "Good Job," "looking good" "almost there" etc. as I zoom on by.

Whoohoo!  I want to race with you Jennifer!  I have always done this and I always have fun.  I'm in the BOP so I think people are a little less serious there.  Occasionally I'll get a blank stare but usually people welcome the comments and jokes.  It's hard on the bike becuase you are usually passing or being passed but on the run you can strike up some good conversations.

If I can properly execute the "pull my finger" trick in the alloted 15 second timeframe is it fair game?

It is ok to encourage people in a friendly way but races are not a place to socialize.
The problem is some people see them that way.
it is called a race for a reason.

I am not sure I agree with this statement ... especially on the run.  My first HIM I ended up chatting with someone for a good portion of the second run loop and I have heard from many fellow athletes that they ran portions of their race with people they met on the course.  You need to know your audience and gauge the response to conversation, but esp in endurance events, I think (at least in the MOP and BOP) there is some socializing.

In shorter races I am usually pushing too hard to say anything more than "looking good", etc.

I have not been the one to chat it up on the race course.  I have work to do.  However, my pace during my IM run was such that I could actaully talk.  I ended up running next to a couple chatty people and ran with them for several miles each talking.  It helped pass the time a bit...

Is this really a big problem for you?
I don't 'socialize' during a race, but during the run portion on longer races I've falled into conversations with people. I can't sprint for 13.1 miles.
And I enjoy socializing before and after!

I jabber all the time. So I don't think so.

Although, I will say that I usually get ignored by whomever I am talking to.

I'm a big fan of the "lookin good"  "get it movin big boy" stuff during the race as it always steps up my pace just a bit.  During the bike in the race I did last weekend I passed and got passed by the same lady 3-4 times and we exchanged quick musings as we passed each time including "on your left, but for how long I dont know"  "This time I am really going to stay in front" etc. etc Those little exchanges always seem to quicken my pace....

My first tri had a 5k trail run that I just was not ready for. About 1/2 mile in someone came behind me and said "lookin' good" or something like that and I said, "just trying to keep going."

Well that girl stayed with me for most of the rest of the run cheering me on. Without her I would not have made my goal (to run the whole thing). I am sure that she held back to help me out. She did sprint off for the last 1/4 mile and then I didn't get to see her at the end, but I hope she knows how greatful I am to her, cause there was no one else out there cheering me on.

So I say, good for you! and I hope you don't stop, cause I wont.

Some of the best conversations I had have been in races.  They give races more context and life to me.  The guy that gave me running advice at Halfmax on the return leg.  Stopping to learn that my wife made the swim cutoff at her Wildflower relay while starting the 13.1.  The guy at IMAZ I walked with during the run and we talked about our day, what our time goal was, when we had to start running.  Walking with sportyj on the last lap (or maybe the second, kinda foggy) of IMAZ.

I'm glad you posted this thread, it's brought up nice memories.  None of this is on the bike, b/c you can't do it without breaking the rules, although I do throw and appreciate a "lookin' good" on the bike now and again.

Does talking to yourself count?  I have done that a few times.  I learned to be careful during a marathon (my only one) when I was saying 'slow down dumb a$$ you're not supposed tpo be goign this fast" to MYSELF, and someone thought I was talking to him.  Oops.

I like it when people say encouraging things to me.  I try to grunt out a 'thanks, you too', but that's as much as I can usually muster.

One of the things that got me hooked on this sport was how friendly and encouraging people were at my first triathlon.  Everyone who passed me on the bike (that would be everyone) had some encouraging words.

I fall into the chatty category - keeping it to just a few words on the bike.
