Subject: Get the STINK out of my visor!!!
I run with a visor, helps keep the sweat from running down my face, but that means the sweat goes into the visor and is usually soaked after a 6 mi run.

After 4 months, this thing STINKS! It's like a sweaty mildew smell, you know that smell of sweaty workout clothes? And nothing seems to be working to get the stink out. I've hand washed it with laundry detergent, I've tried drying it in front of a fan. I've done super hot water. I have not tried bleach because it has black detailing that I think would get ruined. I haven't put it in the washing machine b/c I think the visor part would get ruined.

Please help me get the stink out of this visor!

Get one of those plastic cages they make for hats to wash them while retaining their shape and put it in the washing machine. I also think you can do the same and put them in the dishwasher - I think the dishwasher is better, actually since it won't knock it around.

I wash my running hats after every use.  I put them in with my running clothes on cold.  I lay it out to dry.  While the piping is starting to look a bit worn, the visor is still perfect.  I must have washed on 100 times by now.  If it does eventually fail, I'm happy to buy a new one.  Rather have it clean.

The suggestions above definitely will help and I also use a couple sprays of Febreeze Antibacterial solution after every use.

Oxyclean - I use the carpet formula.  Spray pretty liberally, rinse.  Repeat if necessary and let dry.  Most visors are made with a sort of plastic bill that holds up pretty well.

I throw mine in the washer on the gentle cycle after just about every run.  The thing was only $20, so if i need a new one every 6 months from putting it in the washing machine, so be it.  I do not dry it.

This is true - some technical fabrics don't get the smell out all that well even with regular washing - cheap or race hats are my friend ... especially once the salt sweat line becomes apparent ...

Some may consdider a hat with stink that won't come out is already ruined.  I'm not sure you have much to lose.

I wash mine every time in my post-run shower.

When I get home from my run, I lay my shorts and shirt over the edges of my hamper (so they can dry - this prevents a nasty wet mess of clothes in my hamper), and toss my visor in the shower.  Drink my choco milk, and lounge around until I cool off completely.  When I get in the shower, there's my visor on the floor, and so I remember to at least rinse it out good.

I throw my visor in the regular wash every week or so.  The Headsweats visors handle a washing machine perfectly fine.

Cheers, Chris

I just bought a visor and the sales guy told me the only way he could get the smell out of his was to use the dishwasher with Cascade.

Well I was going to say wash it.

You did that.

I'd toss it and buy a new one.

These are all great suggestions.

I'm gonna step this challenge up a notch...I've had prescription polarized sunglasses for just over a year. They feature a head strap and rubber/foam around the eyes for comfort. How do I get the stink of these? I've sprayed tons of Febreeze on them, but it only keeps the smell away for about a day.

I wash all my hats and visors, too, just like I'd wash my other clothes. Never had a problem.

I had this problem too.  I read somewhere (I forget where) that you can get the smell out of stinky clothes by replacing your fabric softener with plain white vinegar.  I have been doing this for months now on all my workout clothes and visor and nothing has been ruined and I am now stink free - at least at the beginning of the workout.

I think the specific running hats the bill is plastic and can handle the washer.

I throw mine in after every couple of runs and it is holding up perfectly...  I must have washed it a 100 times or more.

I think cheaper hats still have cardboard for bills, so they can get ruined with a lot of washing.

If it is something you got at a running store, the bill is probably a plastic and you can wash it.  If it's something you got wherever (Walmart, county fair, etc. ) the bill may be cardboard and you can get an interesting result if you wash it.

Either way, wash it with your workout clothes (maybe add some vinegar to the water).  If it survives, wear it again and again and again.  If it doesn't, go buy one that will stand up to the rigors of running/washing/running/washing.

Ditto.  Goes in the wash on a normal cycle after every wearing, hang dry.  Especially if it's a headsweats-type or any kind of dry weave fabric it's made to be washed.

Funny story - my wife washed all of my running clothes last week and put some vinegar in the load. Since I line dry my running stuff, I just took it out when the load finished. Didnt know about the vinegar until I went for a run and smelled my freshly vinegared clothes. She told me she was planning on running the wash again to get the vinegar out. OOOOOPPPPPS.

I just throw them in the washer and wash as normal and then dry as normal.

I've never gotten why all these intricate rituals have to be done for washing workout clothes.  You put like colors in the washer, add soap and run the machine!  Then you pull them out and unless they are silk or some other expensive and easily damaged fabric (which is NOT what workout clothes are) you put the damn things in the dryer!

I've been doing that for years and all of my workout clothes last a really long time.  In fact, the wife usually makes me throw them out because they are simply worn out from use, not because they were damaged in the wash!

I take my visor, sunglasses and heart rate monitor strap into the shower after a run and clean them ALL.  Some times I just get in fully clothes and rinse everything.  Then after a few weeks I wash my visor in the machine.
