Subject: Good Ironman training program
I am planning to do my first full Ironman at IM Arizona next year and I am looking for a good  (Inexpensive) training program to help me prepare.  I have the book beIRONfit which includes a 30 week program.  Has anyone followed this program?  Is it a good program to go with?

Thanks!

I haven't used Ironfit, but I thought I would recommend the plans here on BT.  They have them for different levels and they integrate right into your logs to help you track yourself.

Good Luck!

I'm just finishing up BIF and followed the competitive plan and was real happy with the plan and races that were planned along with the training.  The only negative is that I found the swims to be lame and used some masters workouts from online and swim workouts from the BT IM plan.

The BIF plan just seemed to be a good fit for me and I'm hoping the results will be there come Saturday evening.

I used the BT int plan for my first.  Got me through it and I won my division...

Now I'm deciding if I want to go with the advanced for IM utah or the intermediat again (or another source).

Like Triathlete magazines "the essential week by week training guide" which has many variations.

echo, echo, echo.

Use the BT plans on this site.  Easy to understand, easy to follow.  A swift kick in the if you're not at 8-10 hours per week already before beginning the plan.  But that's what any plan should do- jump start you into a great, hard few months.

I used it and I'll use it for my next one as well.  I love that it's based on time and not mileage.  Made it a lot easier to schedule my workouts.

I have read so many books and training schedule and I can tell you that so far, the best one is this one. it is an excellent book for all levels and for all kind of races, full and half ironman, oly, short, etc.

I'll let you know in 18 days I've been using the Intermediate program from Be Iron Fit to prepare for IMAZ. I have been happy with the training plan; we'll see how the results turn out. Compared to the Intermediate BT IM plan, I think in general the difference is in swim yardage. The longest IronFit swims are 3500 yards. Some of the BT ones are 5000.

Read several, get the gist of what its trying to tell you, and then modify one to meet your needs.

I used beIronFit twice. The first time I used the intermediate program and the second I used the competitive program.

Another good (and free) option is the Super Coach plan.

If I do another, I probably make up my own plan using beIronFit and super coach as templates, but for a first timer, sticking to an proven plan is probably a better idea.

I used IF as well and the only thing you might consider changing is the starting mileage (depending on your level prior to the 30 weeks). I started right after doing a couple of Oly's and found that the first several weeks of only 6 hrs of training was too far of a step backwards for me. Overall really felt like it was a good plan, but don't feel like you have to be locked into anyone that you start. they can all be slightly modified to fit your needs.

I have done two Ironman's so far and used the intermediate BT plan for 2008 IMKY and the competitive Be Ironfit Plan for 2009 IMCDA.  Below are my times for each

2008 IMKY = 16:00:52
2009 IMCDA = 13:00:48

I don't attribute the complete improvement in my time due to the Be Ironfit plan, but I think it was a big part of it.  I really liked how it was setup, the consistency of it, that it is 30 weeks, etc...  I felt much more prepared, obviously an extra year of training played some impact into my improvement as I had a better fitness base.

For IMWI 2010, I'm going the coach route.  We shall see how that plays out compared to two plans I followed.

I plan on doing the BT Immediate plan for IMKY next year. Though I have not yet studied the volume of the program, I might end up adding in extra runs throughout the week (as it is my weakest field). Basically, follow a plan and add in more if time and my body permits.

Well I don't have much to go on but finished B2B in 12:07 Saturday following the competitive plan.  I've been fighting some knee pain the last coupe of weeks and I feel as though if my knee behaved I could've dropped another 10 to 15 minutes but it just wasn't gonna happen.  I felt more then prepared physically and enjoyed my first full iron race.

I followed the Be Iron Fit intermediate plan as much as I could in preparation for IMLP and felt it was a good plan.

Not to hijack, but what is everyone's thoughts on a 1/2 iron plan? I have 29 weeks (from this Sunday) until Kansas 70.3.

Thanks,
Kevin

I used the BT Beginner 1/2 IM plan. Worked great and felt good despite it being sunny and 95 degrees the whole time. Recommended!

I followed Be Iron Fit for Lake Placid this year - my first Ironman.

Have to say it worked great. I'd follow it again. I didn't have any injuries, and on race day, there was absolutely no doubt I'd finish. It was a no-brainer.

As someone already said, initially, it is a step back. Freakin' easy!!! Too easy. But eventually it sneaks up on you and you realize how much you're doing. There's very little speedwork but it was amazing how it got so much harder to do. That's all a good thing.

I actually alternated weeks between the competitive plan and intermediate - depending on how much time I had to devote during the weekend. I think the only difference was an extra brick run and/or a recovery ride.

Another vote for Be Iron Fit plan, folowed the COmpetitive Plan for IM Lou- my first, and thought it worked great!  I really like the BT plans for HIM but felt like I was rearranging days too much when looking into the IM plans.  I didnt have to do that for BIF.  I'll use it again for my next IM.

For anyone that does want to use the Competitive Be Iron Fit plan, I got an Excel formatted copy from someone.  It was nice to have a copy in various places- car, work, closet for packing workout bag....PM me your email if you'd like a copy.

I've got access to a lot of different programs but I still like this one the best... especially when you tweak it to fit your needs here and there.  Very simple and easy to follow.  Most programs are more convoluted than they need to be... just like the word convoluted - I should have said more diffficult ;-)  Occams Razor - the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best

I'm probably going to use the BIF competitive for my training next year and have a question for those who have used it. On Sunday's it shows a short bike and a long run. Did you do those as a brick, or one in the morning and one if the afternoon? I know on the other days when it wants you to do a brick, it indicates so. Just curious what you did.

The weekend bike/run is not a brick, they should be separated.  The competitive program, had a short early week brick, then the long bike brick late week.  I ended up blowing off the high rpm ride after the long run on a few occasions or even moved it to different days on occasion.  But I had a crazy work schedule so I did whatever it took and made sure the long bike and runs were done every week.

I like simplicity of this one, too.
But the longest run is only 2.5 hours... for me that would be about a 14-mile run. For me, I think I need to be building up to at least a 20-mile run.

What did you think about the run volume?
