Subject: Brick challenge?

I'm just procrastinating here...I probably should just jump on that nothing thread instead, but I was wondering about a brick challenge next month? This way we keep some power up on two fronts. Hmm...I guess it should just be a tri challenge, but selfish me..i'm thinking about how i can't run for another month.

back to work!

My first race isn't til the end of August. I could use a good hard month of training, but havn't been involved in a challenge before.

How do I get in on this?

I know I started the idea, but I don't think i have the where-with-all to lay down the rules and do the math for it.  We need a volunteer, or two, or three...!!

Maybe have a small rules change, for the benefit of the charities...

If the losing team's goal percentage is above 100%, then the winning team also contributes to the charity.

Any thoughts??

Would be tough to track effort for bricks alone because they would be mixed in with other workouts in the training logs...not sure how you might pull this one off.  Or are you just suggesting a challenge where 2 sports count and don't have to be done in true brick format?

I like Nikki's idea...how about a balanced challenge. So what counts is that people train in a balanced fashion in all three events. So we track time spent in each discipline and set up % for each or something like that. We don't want someone to do 75% training just biking or running. I think that is what Nikki is getting at.

We could do it as a training time challenge....track total hours, but have a minimum % for each of the three discipline. Have the minimum % allow for some degree of flexibility for training plans but have it be balanced. Most spend more time biking, then running and then swimming.

Example: I trained 34 hours last month, so with a 10% increase would be 37.4 hours...but would require a minimuim training to be 20-25% swimming, 35-40% biking, and 30-35% running.

Just an idea of how to do the challenge Nikki suggested...any other ideas?

I am in. I like the idea of balance also, but from a management standpoint it would be a nightmare. I think the easiest way is to just take pure volume in two areas, or tabulate total time done doing actual bricks. However we need to define brick very carefully. I could ride for six hours and run for 5 minutes and call it a brick.

Good luck whoever takes this on!
(that is a challenge)

Now that would be one heck of a challenge - where the rubber meets the road.

I'm done with challenges though. Good luck with it. Sounds like a great idea!

How's this:

Rather than teams, the challenge is individual, and the goal is to commit and stick to a certain volume. The participant commits to n miles or minutes cycling and m yards or minutes swimming. In order to 'win' they have to finish the month within 5% +/- of their stated goals for each discipline.

It's very tri-like: individual efforts and results but in a group setting, with group support. The only competition is with oneself to stick to one's training plan. It also supports the concept of training smart, rather than just slogging out miles.

Winners donate 50%  of their pledge, "losers" donate 100% and the winners decide the charity.

Thank everything holy for that.

I would actually take this challenge a step further and say you need to include swimming. You could take a percentage of goal (with minimums required) in each of the areas and average those out. I don't hink you should penalize people for hitting 100%, but you should require they up their goal when they do achieve a set goal.

I would say minimums should be required for each distance -- like 5,000 meters for the swim, 200 miles for the bike and 20 miles for the run. In my training, I try to maintain a ratio of 1:10:100 in swim, run and bike training. For every mile I swim, I have to run 10 and bike 100. While I don't think this works for everyone as we all have different goals, I think the minimum distances suggested are a good starting point for discussion.

I like the idea of the challenge based on a set goal for individuals. I could take my training plan, convert that to how much of each I'm supposed to do for the month, and there's my goal.

I think the idea of making everyone hit, but not exceed, their goal makes sense, too. It prevents people from sandbagging and also from overtraining just so they don't have to post a pic of their @ss

I liked the first bike challenge with individually set goals. The winners got nothing more than personal satisfaction and to be part of the signature penalty for Kim and bear's bet. The losers faced nothing worse than the public failure to meet their goal, and even some of the unsuccessful efforts were very respectable. Everyone who tried was a winner by getting more bike miles. Sandbagging or overtraining was not an issue. I like the KISS principle.

I like maradaddy's post.  Each person tracks their own volume.  Goals are individually tailored.  Charities benefit.  Everyone gets better.  All disciplines are involved.  Everyone can win.  It's positive.  It's simple.

Count me in.

Everyone can win? Boo....someone needs to lose, particularly the ladies. There has been far too much man flesh displayed over the last month. The favor needs to be returned!

Favor? Favor?! Hah! It wasn't a favor. It was the price of losing; the agony of defeat (for men); the thrill of victory (for women)!

Harumph.

I'm thinking a BRICK CHALLENGE would have to be on the HONOR SYSTEM (as the others were) that it was actually a brick and not bike in the morning and run in the evening.

Also, maybe make this one individual.  You hit your mark, you WIN....you don't, you LOSE!!  Losers face the consequences.....whatever they may be.

And ONLY those distances that were from BRICK workouts count toward the challenge.  NO counting the run you got in over lunch or the ride you slid in before the storm hit and crap like that.

my 2 pesos on the topic.

Rollin' Thunder, I really like how you've structured your training goals. What are you training for? And to take it a step further, would you consider your 1:10:100 to be bike focused? I'm just trying to figure out what would work for me.

Also, Renee, it makes me sad to hear that you're done with the challenges. You've been a great Gear Goddess captain. Thank you.

It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to serve the Gear Goddesses.

I now need to focus on moving my body for the sake of increasing strength, speed and endurance rather than for the sake of a challenge, fun and smack-filled though they have been.

The challenges have certainly raised the bar for me in terms of increased distances but I've made some tactical errors as a result with respect to recovery and tapering for my tri. I've got tri's in 2 and 4 weeks and another oceean swim race in 3 weeks. Gotta focus on my end game!

I LOVE the idea of a challenge, but I vote its done team wise. Maybe we could do it age grouped, country(I'm sure theres more Canadians on here...) or a classic man vs. women.
