Subject: Things dogs eat...
So in addition to the normal random things dogs often eat (kiddle, treats, the cat box treats, grass, etc) my dogs sometimes eat funny things.  Last year my lab decided to eat a piece of tin foil from our trash while we were gone (was not even used to cook anything with or hold anything so not sure why...) and after checking with our vet about estimated amount etc they said she should be fine so it was the first time I have seen a dog with silver poop.

Then this morning after breakfast the dogs were out back playing before I left for work and I noticed one of them acting weird. I go over into the tall grass/weeds towards the back of the fence and see she is sniffing something. As I get close she suddenly lunges and I think she has a rodent or reptile she is trying to eat...grab her and pull her back only to see she has uncovered a ground birds nest hidden in the grass and had just lunged and tried to eat one of the little eggs (which was broken) and she had another unbroken egg in her mouth. Got that egg out and put it aside and pulled her away from the next so hopefully the bird would come back to the last 2 eggs.

Silly dogs!

The dog, Sam, I had while in college ate toast.
No big deal you say, of course a dog will eat toast.
Her method was more ingenious.
She did not actually make the toast herself,
that would be too much like work.
My absent-minded musician roommate made toast for her.
He told me this story himself, so it must be true.
He would put toast in the toaster and wander off to
do whatever it is that absent-minded musicians do.
He would later return to find ....no toast. Being absent minded,
and self-aware enough to recognize it. He figured that he hadn't actually made toast,
but merely thought he had.

One day he happened to not be quite as far away fro the kitchen
while making his toast. He saw Sam
tip-toe (yes, she was smart enough to tip-toe)
in and lay in wait for the toast to pop up
whereupon, she put her paws on the counter,
plucked the toast from the toaster,
swallowed it whole
and returned to her place n the couch.

Dogs love the dirty laundry.  Shadow has gotten in the bathroom trash during the wrong week of the month, that's never fun to clean up.

my MIL gave my old rottie a leftover peice of sausage out of a peice of green plastic wrap and acidentally dropped both.  2 days later he left us a steamer right by the driveway with the green plastic wrap in it, as to say....next time give me just the sausage lady!

our newest addition seems to really like used tissue paper, snot included. he just digs them out of the trash and tears them up all over the place.  we got through the undies stage, and my wife is happy about that.

I have two bassett puppies who have not yet outgrown the chewing stage... so far they've chewed through electrical cords, including LIVE ones (the outside a/c unit, fun!) and eaten a good sized hole through the drywall.  Those are the more weird things, aside from the usual.... carpet, shoes, dog beds, etc.  My husband caught one with a dove in her mouth, with the wings still flapping, he had to beat the dog with a stick to get it to let go!  They are oh, so cute, but they have destroyed our backyard!  Oh, they've also chewed through the back door...

Dexter, If I let Kora catch one that would be her!

As for the Laundry thing, we are lucky so far. Other than trying to make my socks into toys they stay out of the laundry unless there is kibble spilled in it (the hamper is in the closet right next to the big container of dog food.)

The toast story also reminded me what Kora used to do before we got her better trained, making a tuna melt I would pick up the sandwhich from the counter and turn around to put it on the stove and she jumped up into the air to take a big bite from the middle of the sandwhich and run off to eat it. funny to see but we definately worked on kitchen behaviour first after we got her a little over a year ago.

Why would you beat a dog for acting on its natural instincts? When it (obviously) hasn't been trained otherwise?

The dog we had when I was in high school we dubbed an 'emotional eater.'  He had been diagnosed as having hip displaysia and that's why we got him (he had been in the seeing eye dog program but with the displaysia couldn't graduate).   Anyway, when I would go away he'd find a way to eat full loaves of bread of pies that were sitting on the counter. He was really tidy about it too - most of the time it wouldn't be uncovered until the spotless foil pie plate was stepped on or the clean plastic wrap for the bread was found on the floor ...

Because beating it for just laying around would be mean?

Rocco has been on a strict "seefood" diet-- whatever he sees he considers food and eats it. Could be my best running shoes, my wife's favorite purse, and sometimes, it's our children.

This week it was the cable for my iPod shuffle. Hope that one worked itself out okay-- not really sure it did.

Huh. What don't dogs eat?

50 lbs worth of dog can eat 25 lbs worth of turkey.

My last Boxer had a serious fondness for drugs and cigarette butts. Then again, she was an underage-mom crack street puppy before I got her.

My current Lab (black) LOVES Heineken.

My sister's overfed weighs-near-me Argentine dogo likes to eat whole young trees. Yep, on more than one occasion we've found him on the porch, blissfully munching on a sapling, roots and all. Later he has these really funny poos that stand up straight.

Sis was dumb enough to offer him a lick of Popsicle once (yes, we are THOSE kind of people) and the whole thing disappeared, stick and all.
