Overcast
Total Time = 4h 16m 7s
Overall Rank = 169/169
Age Group = Clydes 39 & -
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

Same as usual - start off with some gel and a Myoplex shake. No bananas in the house today (an omen which would come back to haunt me). NEVER CHANGE ANYTHING ON RACE DAY :D

Drove to the lake for a 7:00AM start. The gates are usually open by then even if the park doesn't officially open until 8:00AM. Well, today's ranger was going by the book... So that's 2 marbles out of the bag.
Event warmup:

A couple lengths of the swimming area at the lake. Sit at the side of the lake and relax for a few minutes. Get ready for an 8:00AM start.
Swim
  • 47m 35s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim. One of the longest distances I've done with a freestyle stroke. Just kept it going at a sustainable pace. Got some sludge up my nose about 1400 yards into the swim and started gagging. My concentration never really recovered. 3 marbles down.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Well aside from the sludge snorting incident.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

A pretty good T1. As my own race director, I enacted the T1-Timewarp rule and timed myself out of the water to the car and then when I got the bike/run location, I started the clock where I left off. Saved 25 minutes that way :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 44m 52s
  • 25.8 miles
  • 14.76 mile/hr
Comments:

Manged to do OK here. The false flats had me at 12-14 MPH, but nothing crazy. I did a 2 loop course with a 2.5 mile tail (5 miles total) at the transition end of the course. Right at the 2nd turnaround, I heard something behind me go sproing! Funny, I don't recall seeing any rocks... What is hitting my leg? Oh, my FREAKING BROKEN SPOKE!! Get off the bike, bend the broken spoke around the one beside it. Hmmm, back wheel is all over the place. So I disabled the back brakes entirely so that they wouldn't rub, jumped back on and limped back to transition. I was on time to do a sub 90 minute 40k too. Oh well. I didn't die or wreck because of it, so no big deal. 4 marbles down. As I'm getting within 2 miles of transition, I noticed that my back tire is starting to get a little squishy. Although it quit rubbing on the frame as it lost air. Doing 12-14 mph the whole way back (8 miles). 5 marbles...
What would you do differently?:

Um, not break a spoke, but since I didn't do it on purpose, let's just skip to the next part.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

One of my cleanest T2's ever. Everything felt pretty good. Since I'm familiar with the park that they use for the transition area in Brockville, I tried to guess what distances the dismount line would be from my rack...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 41m 17s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 16m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I started off with the plan of running 9 minutes and walking 1 minute. That worked well the first time around, but not after - so I changed it to 8 minutes running, 1 minute walking. That worked for another 20 minutes... After a couple of miles, I ran into my TnT tri coach who was out doing his workout. He rode beside me for a couple of minutes and we chatted. It was cool to actually talk to someone. The last mile before the turnaround had a bad cant to the road and I was really starting to feel it in my knees and ankles - so I walked to the turnaround. Tried to start running a number of times after the turn around, but could never get up to speed. I could feel my left knee going out around me instead of back and forth, so I figured I was better off walking a couple more miles before I hurt myself. I swear I looked like Cookie Googleman at the end of "Best in Show" when she was walking out onto the show floor and her knee was doing this weird orbital thing... OK, where was I with the marbles? Screw it, the marbles are getting too heavy to carry at this point, so I dump the rest of them on the ground and keep going. I was glad that I had my fuel belt with some water and sports drink. Because of how evercast it was, I didn't realise how hot it was starting to get. About a mile and a half from the end, these 2 guys came up behind me on their bikes and as they passed, I heard the one guy say "Oh my god, did you see that guy? I bet he can put away the hamburgers." My reply? "F#@k you a$$monkey!!!!!!" You know, I wasn't really having a sufferfest until they came along, but that one pretty much deflated me. During the last mile I tried to start running a couple more times, but would get a pounding headache as soon as I started, so I went back to walking. Three tenths of a mile from the end, I figure I better run now because with the exception of the one race where I messed up my ankle, I have yet to walk across a finish line. So I ran. And it sucked. I've never wanted to cry and vomit at the same time like that. It was a feeling that I hope to never feel again, but somehow I doubt that will be the case. As I crossed my imaginary, but very real, finish line I felt completely drained. And then I smiled...
What would you do differently?:

Not hurt myself 5 weeks before my A race.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around the running track at the high school while making a couple of phone calls and drinking my recovery drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lots of stuff, but it's all in the past. I had put so much effort into training for this race that I wasn't about to quit even if I had to withdraw from the actual event. There will be more races ahead of me and I've got nowhere to go but faster at this distance. So for my first Oly distance tri, it was everything I hoped it would be and a few things I never imagined.

Event comments:

Don't do the "I wish I was in Brockville" Triathlon. No volunteers anywhere :) Instead, do the actual race in Ontario - I hear it's nice...

You had some obstacles and overcame them....screw nasty people...don't let them bother you (I know easier said than done)...they don't know what a hero you are all of us and those you love...look how far you have come. You are amazing!! Hugs to Jen!

Damn good race, Frank.  Next time you need to pull off such a gutsy performance like this, call me and I'll fly up there and intermittently ride/drive/crawl a mile ahead of you so you have water/gatorade stops every mile.  You've got tremendous character....great race!

Way to go, Frank! That's such a cool thing you did. It's amazing the things people will say about when they don't even know you. Bet they couldn't finish an oly. Well, whatever to them, YOU, my friend, are a stud! Congrats!

Frank, you're completely, freaking AMAZING!!!  I am so impressed with what you did!  You're one dedicated guy.

I wish so much that you could be with us tomorrow.  Michel and I were looking at the Scuba divers today down at Blockhouse Island and wondered how you were doing.  Glad to hear from you and are so happy that you did your tri.  I hope Jen is doing Ok.

I really hope you get to come next year.  The Thousand Islands Tri logo is made just for you...there's a little scuba diver guy on it!

You rock, buddy!

first, congratulations on finishing your first olympic. second, i would have been down and out after the broken spoke, so kudos on sticking with it and then some. as for the run, i was feeling really bad for you until the cookie googleman image (okay, i still felt bad, but now my side ache is also back). this race certainly threw you some curve balls, but damnit, you still finished! well, better go - i'm off to visit the a$$monkeys with a dozen eggs, some tp, and a big can of glitter pink spray paint and some bar end tassels for their bikes. hope you're recovering.

Hey Frank, I heard the sad news from Jen on Saturday.  You are one heck of a man big guy to organize your own tri like that!  Cudo's to you Frank ... that was a well organized triathlon and you did a great job of participating in it.

Frank,

I have said it before, and I'll say it again.....You are a STUD!

You have worked so hard, gotten some real reality checks, and you still stand tall to show what you are made of.

Great Job.  I only wish I could have been there to see you finish!

Oh,  I would have loved to have been able to shove a big stick in the spokes of the As&%*@#$ on the bike.

Thanks for all of the love everyone. It really felt good to do this "race." Thinking about not doing it was starting to feel like taking a class, working really hard on the homework assignments, passing all of the quizzes and then not being allowed to take the final exam. Sorry, I can't do that What's funny now that I look at the results of the race is that there were only 2 other under 39 clydes - I could have gotten some bling if I had shown up!!! Even with my DFL finish time

Hopefully next year will be different and Jen and I can make it up there for some racing and diving (this is the first time in 7 years that we haven't gone up to Brockville in Aug/Sept for wreck diving in the river). In the end, I guess I didn't actually do this race by myself, I had you guys cheering me on, there was a crowd of Canadian geese at the lake making a noisy riot (I guess they were cheering me on), I got buzzed by a Great Blue Heron during the swim (imagine turning to breathe and seeing a bird that size skimming the water 2 feet above your face) and then the whole grasshopper/locust incident when I was running slogging by one of our many local soybean fields... I felt well enough Sunday morning to join my Adventure Race team for a run/bike practice, but after a miserable jog/slog/walk 5k loop of the lake and one (of 4 planned) 5k loop on the bike I called it a morning. I just couldn't will my legs to move. I'm glad I finished the distances and now I'm looking forward to recovering this week and having a good Adventure Race in a few weeks. Tonight I finally get a chance to make up my missed Taijiquan belt test from June.

It's been a heck of a summer, but you know what? You just deal with it and take it one day at a time. Do we really any other choice? Thanks again for believing in me.

-Frank

Wow, Frank, you had me at the broken spoke, and then slayed me with Cookie!  too freaking funny.  Actually, you may think me too emotional, but I was right there with you with the hamburger comment, so hearing about you finishing anyway, well.... I have to a admit a little welling up. Must be those onions I'm cutting here at work.  You never cease to amaze me that, in the face of adversity, whether it's as relevant as illness, or irrelevant as a broken spoke, or some a$$hole (who no doubt couldn't finish an Oly distance), you continue to push on anyway.

Your refusal to quit is what makes you an inspiration to me.

Thanks

Chris
