I’m amazed, and impressed, with the amount of food some people can put away immediately after a race. I finished a HIM yesterday and saw my fellow athletes downing huge meatball heroes and pizza and other grub. The last thing I wanted to do was eat. Aside from being spent from the race, I’d been diligently sucking down calories for the last six hours. I don’t think I had room for that much food.

We went out to eat a few hours later and I was famished, but immediately post-race, it was all I could do to drink a bottle of chocolate milk and some water.

There’s a local sprint that has a huge pancake breakfast at the finish—pancakes, sausages, bacon, etc. I usually have to avoid the buffet on my way back to pack up—looking at all that food makes me nauseous.

Are you hungry right after you finish?

RIGHT after a race my tummy is usually too upset for eating solid foods, but i will take a lot of gatorade/beer/some form of liquid calories.  after about an hour, i am STARVING and would destroy your pancake breakfast!

After my first two HIMs I just laid down in the shade and did my best not to puke.  Since then though I've pretty much chowed down after a race.

I'm always the same way.  Immediately post race, anything from a 5k to an IM, I don't want food.  Anywhere from 30 to an hour later and I'm famished.

Nope.  I came across the line on Saturday, and everyone kept offering me food.  I just wanted a bottle of water and that was it.  The actual smell of them cooking the food made me feel nauseated.

It took me a couple hours to be able to eat something.

Not even a little bit. I want a bottle of water and to cool down. Within an hour I'll be starving though, and when it hits, I gotta eat!

I finished a Oly yesterday at 10, we couldn't pick up bikes until 10:30, and I got home around 11:30. Went straight to the fridge for a beer and cold pizza

I think most people, myself included, eat to much. After a race is no exception.

It used to take me 24 hours or more before i could eat real food again after a tri or any other raxe longer than 90 minutes with out feeling awful. Now that I only use liquid nutrition, I can hulk smash a buffet table after the race is over and i can hobble my way over to the food.

I try and eat something, but it's usually a struggle.  Sort of graze if I can.  I usually put stuff down just because I should, not because I want to.

I mostly race in Vegas, and you get done with any race distance, and just exhausted, I always see the table of bananas, orange slices, and bagels just sitting in the desert heat.  That, mixed with the lack of appetite, makes eating the last thing on my mind.  It's a shame, becuase I felt like I paid for it, but eating a 100 degree orange or banana?  Blech.  Usually the water is luke warm as well, but what are you going to do?

Usually, but even though they supposedly are good protein, I still won't touch a grub.  GROSS!!

I'm pretty tapped at the end of an OLY, and if it was a hot day I can barely even keep drinking. NOTHING tastes right. Water doesn't do the trick and the Powerades seems to suck moisture out of my tongue. As much as I've needed the fluids my mouth starts to not like them.

Give me an hour or so though and it is ON.  I'll take advantage of whatever I find at the finish line if I can stomach it, but I tend to be BOBOP so there isn't usually much left. When you are DFL the darn spectators have typically eaten your goodies already.
