Age Group Rank = 2/152
Pre-race routine:

I may have been sick but damn right I had that night-before beer. :)

Event warmup:

Due to extraordinarily long lines for packet pick-up and bag check I was limited for my warm up.
-10 minutes Jogging
-Some Strides
-Navigated the corrals to line up
Run
  • 21m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Unfortunately the only thing I pulled from the "fast and flat" course was the flat part, haha.

Originally I had planned this 5K to figure out where I am at and use it to calibrate my fall training but unfortunately I have been fighting sickness all week and I woke up Sunday feeling even worse than I had.

Instead I used this race as an exercise in rolling with the punches and making adjustments to my goals on the fly.

The race had a cross country start for the first 100 yards or so. It was grassy with pot holes and loose gravel. After than you hurdled a small curb onto the road. From there to about mile one you ran on the road then dipped onto a gravel trail that connected you onto the paved path that follows the lake. Just before mile 2 you turn off onto another gravel trail that brings you back onto the road. Just after mile 3 you take a 90 degree right back onto the cross country (grass/pot hole) finish.

I feel I executed the race pretty perfectly. I went out strong but not too fast, held steady through mile 2, cranked it up at bit into the 3rd mile and hammered home for the last 800 or so. Albeit, a few minutes slower than I *think* I'm capable of.
Post race
Warm down:

I actually needed to get some training miles in so I did a 10-miler after this.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just being sick

how can a "fast and flat" course have you hurdling curbs!  I'm sure if i did that run I would not have made the "hurdle" part.

Love your flexibility of using it to roll with the punches.  AND a quick jaunt afterward to boot!

My 5k in July was like that down a sidewalk, across a street, onto a multi-use path, back on to a road, up a dirt hill, down a street, turn right, up another street ... who comes up with these routes?

Hope you are feeling better.

Yowza! You are a machine. I am jealous of the 10 miler after, too. I have been needing one of those for weeks.

I can only dream of being that fast for any distance... and I'm definitely not that fast when also sick!

Nicely done!!!

Awesome job!!   I love how your shorts and sneaks are color coordinated!   And I will take your execution away from this as some good advice: "I went out strong but not too fast, held steady through mile 2, cranked it up at bit into the 3rd mile and hammered home for the last 800 or so."  Those girls are lucky you were sick!

Nice job on the post-race 10-miler. I suspect there's more to come in the 5k time once you're not sick.

Good that you got the pre-race nutrition right this time around.

Agreed -- you run mighty fine even while sick. Congrats. Didn't you get some jewelry with the Irongirl finish? Let's see it. ;-)

Congrats on navigating the course and the icky feelings and still finishing 2nd in your AG. Quite respectable.

Well YEAH, color coordination very well may be more important than the beer hydration the night before. Also, I may not have done enough beer hydration. Had I done more, perhaps I would have drowned this virus. That's how it works, right? RIGHT?!?!
