Subject: men- how long will training be set back

I'm just about to start training for 22 week marathon plan for May marathon.  I have been working on a good base for about 6 weeks to prepare for 20-40+ mile weeks ahead.  It will be my 6th marathon, and 4th time doing the same one.  Hoping to get in under 3:20:00 this time around.  During this time, my wife and I found out we're having #3 and have discussed the need for me to get the oporation.

My plan was to wait until the end of the marathon and have it done while I recover from the end before I start training for September Half iron distance race.  My wife feels that is the selfish move, as she will then be 8 mo. along with #3 and says   "I don't want to be waiting on your injured whiny a$$ while I'm walking around 8mo. pregnant"

My question is how long from procedure time to running time am I looking at being down and out.  I've heard you can rest for a few days and resume walking around, but can't imagine resuming my 3-5 times running 4-8 miles a week the next week.  What are others experiences, 1wk, 2wks?  longer?

Not sure as I've not had it done, but I think you gotta bite the bullet regardless of down time.

I took 3 days off from training. First post-snip workout was a swim. The next day I went for a 4 mile run. Wore tri-shorts for some extra support and it was a generally easy run. I was back and at it full speed within a week. Everyone is different, but I would recommend taking it easy for a few days and, like all other training, listen to your body. If it hurts or you have some discomfort, slow down or stop. If you feel good, go with it.

Don't be a wuss, get it done - some guys go back to work same day (not me, I took the drugs)

You can run in a couple days if you have good shorts, week for sure. Wait a bit more for biking.

You're not going to lose fitness over 4-6 days anyway.

5 days for my recovery. Best decision ever! Swim first then run with good shorts. I didn't bike for 2 weeks.

Had it done in March. Friday afternoon, chilled the weekend. Think I ran a few miles on the treadmill Mon/Tues with very supportive under armour compression shorts.

Best $83 dollars that I have ever spent on medical care.
Good luck.

Edited to say: I had the scalpel less procedure, if that matters.

Your priorities are all wrong son.... when I had mine done my only concerned was when I could lay the pipe again.

Do it now, it really isn't that bad.

I actually walked half way home right after the procedure cause I'm too damn impatient to wait for a ride.

Also, because of impatiences I went for a run two day later. I will admit though that it was a short one (3k) and I had the boys well supported.

Do it now, it really isn't that bad.

Git er done right away.  When I had mine I was walking about the same day.  Just felt like I got kicked in the nads so there was a dull pain for a day or so, but the pain meds pretty much made it go away.

I think i had it done on Friday and mowed the grass on saturday or sunday and it really wasn't a big deal.  I wasn't running back then, but I wouldn't think there'd be more than 5 or 6 days off from running.

This^^^^

I have light beads of sweat forming on my forhead as I try denying the inevitable.

I have a mission/assignement to call for a consult tomorrow.  Can't help but think I'm taking it in the shorts on this one, but it is the necsesary thing to do.

Thanks for the feedback all.  I did not hear of anyone out more than 5 days, and that's encouraging, I think.

Pretty much the same. Don't bike for a while like Robert said but you could swim after 5 days and run with TIGHT compression undergarments. And if there is soreness after a short run or the swim. Rest for as few more days. Overdoing it will be the most painful thing you could imagine if the swell on you. Frozen peas bro, frozen peas.

Everyone is different but ask your doctor what he or she recommends.

Sorry, but I was one of 1% that did not go well.  Due to internal bleeding the boys swelled up till there was nary a wrinkle in the whole works and the stiches tore.  I was out of work 4 weeks and did nothing for at least another four weeks out of fear.  I, like you, talked to many people and they all said no sweat so I was not concerned in the least.

That being said, it was still worth it.

I would add let ice be your friend.

True story here and something that came along with triathlon....Nurse came in before the procedure to check me over. Just laying there with everything exposed, she looks down then up, "nice job shaving!"

For me, it was straightforward, no pain, and even was a pallbearer at a funeral the night I had it done. No ill effects, and back to normal the next day.  Just remember, there's still bullets in the gun until the chamber is empty. Getting the 'all clear' follow up test is highly important unless you want #4 as well.

Had mine on a Friday.  Doc says, "I do them on Fridays so you have the weekend.  Try and milk it and see if you can go all weekend on the couch watching DVDs and having your wife bring you beers, sandwiches and ice packs.  See how long you can make it last.  Good luck!"

By mid-afternoon on Saturday my wife was kicking me, "get up you lazy bum!  You're a horrible liar."

1-2 days, a little sore.
Swimming after 3 days.
Running after 4-5 days.
Biking after 2 weeks.

It's really no big deal.

Just remember the most important part:  No unprotected pizza until the lab report comes back 0 swimmers.  You still have a bunch cocked and loaded in the pipes that needs to be flushed out.  "A good dozen or so bj's ought to take care fo that," my doc said.  "Well then I'm going to need a prescription," I replied.  SO HE WROTE ME ONE!

Unfortunately my wife just laughed and commented, "you'll need to get this filled at a different pharmacy...  Nice try."

I also had mine on a Friday.  I decided to try running the Monday after - big mistake!  Everything hurt.  I was able to finally run normally that Thursday and then I ran a Half Mary that same weekend.   Full recovery for running is was about 5 days for me.

Good luck and buy your bag of peas early!

If she thinks you're being selfish, you could remind her that you're not the only one who can be fixed.  Especially if she's having a c-section, they can wrap it all up at the same time.

We had given up having kid #2 and I even had the Dr's appt for a consult.  The next day we found out she was pregnant.  Fast forward 9 months.  She brought up the fact that I'd probably need to remake that appt.  Sigh... OK.

Then came the C-section.  So I say.. "Hey doc, while you're in there... hint hint..."  She surprisingly agreed.

While it was not a big deal to me, I can say I'm glad I got out of that one.

Enough guys have done it that it probably isn't a big deal.  But I'm with you, happy that the wife bit the bullet.

But you can't deliver at a Catholic hospital.  Doc won't be allowed to do it there.
