Swim
Comments: My Garmin had the swim course at 990m. It appears I swam straight, so I think the course was a bit long. Which makes sense given I felt like I was swimming well, and 20min for 990m is a heckofalot better than 20min for 750m! It was a relatively small field and I was in the frontish, so I got to do the fun turn around both buoys. I got some feet to draft off of after the last buoy, then passed with about 100m left. I went out quite fast, but was able to slow and get my breathing/HR under control without having to breast stroke, so that is progress! Transition 1
Comments: Not too bad. Bike
Comments: First race on my tri bike. My shoulders and neck were really sore for the out, but fine for the back. I was pushing, I wanted to see what I could do in a sprint--I haven't done one in awhile. I dropped my chain on the first hill--had to stop and get off, and I struggled a bit to get it back on. Cost me a minute or so.... The course was open, so traffic was a bit of an issue. There was traffic control at turns. Coming up to the turnaround, there was marking on the pavement that said "Turnaround" with an arrow. But then there was a traffic control person about 100m down the road saying "Go around me". Pooooor course marking! What would you do differently?: Not much. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I don't like running in sand. The beach is pretty, but it's hard to do. The course again was not well marked on the beach--are we supposed to run back along the beach, or got into the trees along the trail? The loop was well marked. There were very few volunteers that I saw. I was trying to push on the run. I did well, I am pretty happy with my results. I felt like puking most of the way, so I think I did it right? :) Post race
Warm down: Avoided puking. Got some pizza when I felt ok. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just me. I am much more of a long course athlete. Long course only hurts for the last part. Sprints hurt the whol way. Event comments: I won't do an Outback event again. Everything went off late. M had wiped out on her bike--when she finished, I asked where first aid was and was told by the race director that "They left--sorry". Ummmm, what? There are still a lot of athletes out there on the Olympic course. WTF??? When I went later to ask for water to wash out some road rash, they had run out. Courses poorly marked. My friends were directing people where to go at the run start. They saw several people crash at bike in due to poor direction. Apparently many of the events put on by the company used to be really good, but have gone downhill recently. Unfortunate. Last updated: 2014-08-18 12:00 AM

We arrived on Sat afternoon. We were lucky enough to have been invited to stay at M's friends cabin overnight so we didn't have far to travel to the start--like a 5 min walk :) We went to pkg pickup which was supposed to have started at 2:30. It was more like 3:30 when they finally got their computer up and running and got going. We got our packages, then went down to the lake for a short swim. Went back up to the school for the briefing, supposed to start at 4:30. It was 4:45 before it started, and even then, they never got their computer working. Sigh.
Up at 5:45 race morning. Had a cup of coffee, a Clif bar. We got everything packed so that we would be ready to go right after the race.
We got into the water about 15 min before race start to get warm--with 5 min before race start, we were told we would be delayed by 15 min...
