Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread It sounds like the heat just got to you and you may have underdone the water a bit. For your next ride I would go a little slower on the bike, and if it is hot (90+) do smaller loops near your house and practice dumping a cup of water on your shirt or over your head in addition to keeping your water intake good. My ride was in 92F temps and I was doing around 20 oz of water per hour (a little less earlier in the day and around 20 later when it was warmer). I did 160 oz of fluids in 7 hours (117 miles with hiills and wind). In the race the swim will start early, you will probably be fine temperature wise on the bike and the heat will hit during your run. So keeping your shirt wet, hat wet, etc. will help you stay cooler. There is a temptation on the run to try to stay cool by drinking cool water... which results in nasty side cramps. At the race I dump a glass of water on my hat or shirt every mile and if my shoes get soggy, oh well. 2 years ago the temps were only 89F, so that strategy worked fine. Also we shouldn't have any humidity for the race even if it gets hot it won't be humid so water on shirts should cool fine. Luck in your training. 1 more build week, stay safe. Member 92 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Enrique, Probably all the above. I started brick workouts after my long rides 8 weeks ago. The first one was enlightening. I found I needed to consume way more calories and fluids on the bike and get the legs use to running after sitting for 5 hours. I also went out way to hard on my first few runs. Rest up and get a couple more in. |

Fatigue build up.... killing my motivation. Ya I am getting them all in, but procrastinating. It is all part of the game, but oh would it be nice to just nap instead. |

Today I am forced to miss my workouts due to work, but my usual feeling of guilt is replaced more with a feeling of relief! LOL!

Extreme Veteran 318 North Carolina | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Yeah it really hit me this past weekend...I was just feeling really sluggish and just felt that I was on the verge of getting sick... I had a really bad run on Saturday ( the mid to upper 90 degree temps with high humidity and bad air quality didn't exactly help either) So I decided to just take a couple days to rest and recover. I actually felt really good during my workouts today and I'm hoping that it will get me through this last big week and on into my taper....Good Luck with the rest of your training....4 more weeks!!!! |

Yesterday's swim was my worst of the season and my evening run wasn't much better. Having to really dig deep to find the motivation now. OTOH, really looking forward to tapering in a week, and the race is getting closer and closer, feeling more and more doable...... Looking forward to meeting up with you all. Anyone interested in a Thursday dinner? I'll be quite a bit more relaxed then than on Friday..... |

I know you guys are ready for taper to begin, but, for those of us who live with you, I, for one, am not ready for the obsessions to begin. See everybody when we get there. Until then, behave yourselves. |

Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Oh yeah, my ankle injury is no more but I replaced it with a strained lower back. (over trained a bit on the bike) A little nervous about the rest of my training. My running volume is just not there and I had to cut my swim short this morn. Gonna try to keep swimming and biking and hopefully I'll get 1 good week of running in. Already obsessing a bit so I had to purge and get it on paper and out of my head. This is my first IM training the mental stuff is turning out to be the hardest!!! It's just about crossing the line now so I think the last 7 months of training will get me through... |

Pro 3730 NorCal | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread My training has been craptastic at best. I'm not sure if I will be at the starting line in a few weeks. I think doing 3 IMs last year kinda started me on the road to Ironman overkill and then other life factors got in the way. I have lost the joy in the journey. Over the past 2 weeks I decided to let myself opt out of Vineman and just train for pleasure without dangling the IM carrot in front of my face. I'm riding 105 miles this weekend for LiveStrong, maybe after my ride I will feel different about toeing the line at Vineman in a few weeks. Regardless of if I race or not, I hope to be at packet pick-up, might as well pick up my freebies and meet some amazing BTers |

You spend far more time training than you ultimately do racing so you should be sure to enjoy yourself during the training. Hope you get your mojo back. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I've read through the race program several times but I did not see any mention of the specifics on special needs bags. At what points do you have access to them? I am particularly interested if there is access late in the run. I have read several race reports where people running after sundown had a hard time seeing the road as some areas are pretty dark. Was wondering if a headlamp would be advisable? What time is sundown? |

On a similar note, are there changing tents? If no, I assume it's acceptable to just change out in the open? |

You will pass by this area at the completion of each run loop." http://www.vineman.com/triathlon/Special_Foods_Bags_-_Full_Vineman.htm |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Looks like I may be racing...but not by jumping into the Full. The swimmer on my wife's team for the Full VM Relay indicated today she may be dropping out due to injury and lack of training. So I may be swimming for her. She'll have to make a decision tomorrow as the VM staff told my wife they need to process the change right away (not only to process me in as a participant, but to switch the team from the women's division to mixed). If it happens, it'll be a little ironic, since I've done the least training (by far) for the swim this year... (And in related news, a friend who's doing the 70.3 heard today that it is looking like that race will not be wetsuit-legal this year. While that seems to be the prospect every year and then it doesn't happen, the water temp is trending warmer than the last couple years.) |
