I hope you get to start running soon, I know how much you love it. On compression socks/sleeves, what do they do exactly? I've never used them, but I have been having some issues with my left shin recently after a brick workout then a lot of fin work in the pool the next day. Could these help? I've seen compression socks help somewhat with shin splints. Wear them overnight and see if it helps. Usually shin splints are brought on by a muscular imbalance. In my opinion the two best things to get rid of them (And believe me I had plenty of them in my gymnastics days) are: 1. Toe raises, toe raises and more toe raises. The beauty of these are that you can do them pretty much anytime and anywhere, even when laying down in bed. 5 minutes multiple times a day should help. 2. Get a "stick" or a broom stick will do as well and roll out those shins. It'll hurt like !(@#& ^!!@#, but it should help. Ice afterwards. |

While there still isn't much good research on compression socks and sports (for performance), the general consensus is that they do help to increase circulation and reduce lactic acid build up. Since I have angered my soleus (both legs), a few folks have recommended them to me for the next little while both for runs and recovery. I have a few pair of sockwell knee highs that I can wear to work as well as a few pair of knee high trouser socks with compression (vim&vigr and other). I wanted the calf sleeves for running. I wanted more than one pair so that I can wash them as needed ;-) |

I actually went on my first run yesterday. It was rainy and cold all day but waited until early evening when the sun came out and it was gloriously beautiful running on one of my favorite trails. Only ran 1.25 miles while walking 1.25 but things felt pretty good. Be careful with that shin. I doubt the compression socks would do much for the shin. I'd ease up on the fin work a little until things settle down. This makes me smile. So good to see you able to get back into your favorite activities at your favorite places at a smart pace. |

What is increased or improved circulation? The socks or sleeves have been used medically for longer term immobile patients to help reduce pooling with the extreme lack of movement or activity. In that sense circulation has been improved though it may not mean that blood flows more easily. Mine actually feels restricted, as indicated by the increased RPE & HR for a given pace or power along with the sleeves bringing on swollen ankles. It seems more like a tourniquet spread over a larger area. Some people can sleep with them, but they gave me trouble there too. Namely the elevated HR to keep the circulation flowing. I had trouble calming down enough to fall asleep. I think the good feeling comes more from the little bit of support they add. In the times they didn't cause more problems, that support did help me start running some more in the earlier going (calf or lower extremity issues). I didn't have an AlterG or underwater treadmill available, so this helped to reduce some of the strain as even the easiest running has some significant forces as your entire body weight is involved. Without those there is more a significant minimum level to get to than for something like the bike. |

From what I understand, research shows that compression improves venous blood flow, may improved lactate (as measured by blood lactate) clearance, reduces muscle vibration and may aid in recovery (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22052027) but probably does nor improve performance (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22161265). Maybe think of it as a tool in the toolbox to pull out as needed, like an ice bath. And, like an ice bath, YMMV. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Originally posted by jmkizer Some of these distinctions are what I was looking at as they seem to easily become conflated. Definitely on the last part too, and with any tool it works best when one understands it. A further question would be with the end goal. Usually it's increasing performance. Quicker recovery would seem to mean more workouts, longer workouts, etc. But how is the quicker recovery achieved? Did the body make all the adaptations more quickly or was the apparent need to make such adaptations reduced with lots of things being cleared more quickly? When the tool isn't used as well, the latter means doing more work to achieve the same thing. It's an interesting question trying to balance this out.Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by Jet Black Steve - so glad to see you take yourself off the DL!!! So I signed up for the short race this Sunday. This will serve as a warm up for the offroad ride I have coming up at the end of April First race of the season for me. 39km ride (24 miles) The terrain is rolling to flat surfaces. 60% gravel roads, 20% paved roads, 10% farm laneways (private property), trails and farm property (private property) in Waterloo Region now the fun part Weather is forcasted to be below freezing, potential for snow and wind gusts to 66km/h (40mph) |

Looks like I've got some competition. In my experience, 95-97% if you want to run well off the bike. I'm flirting with the idea of doing a duathlon this weekend. It's a 5k run/15 mile bike/1 mile run. I won this race two years ago when it was a 5k/15 mile bike/5k, but I haven't been training my run or bike enough to compete on that level. Maybe I'll go for a run tonight and see how I feel. Edited by msteiner 2016-03-29 1:14 PM |

This is just a fun training race for me, not sure what to expect results wise in the middle of the IM build. But it's right by the house and on my b-day, plus get to get some transition work in for the first time in a while. Plus, free beer! |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Hey Manatees, it looks like you had a great weekend or have plans for the start of your tri season which is great. Steve it's great to see you back and that you have been able to start running again. Sorry that I have been AWOL for a bit. It's been mega crazy at work but I finally have that magic signed off audit report, so now I can forget about 2015 and start work on 2016. We have our annual church convention over Easter and as I am a church employee that means I get to work the entire weekend. But I now have the rest of this week off in lieu of working so that is great. K and I are doing a 10k on Sunday, thankfully I am doing it with K cause I haven't been training but really her run speed is slow enough that I think I will cope ok despite the no training as I can pretty much keep up with her doing a fast walk (but I don't do that cause it would be horrible for her). The last of the tri series I entered is scheduled for the following weekend, but I am thinking of not doing it. I already missed 3 of the 5 due to my back issues and I haven't been swimming. It's also forecast to be cold and raining. Might see how I am after the run this weekend, the swim would most likely be wetsuit legal given the forecast temp which would make it better. Seems like they're not muddy only when there is enough snow to cover it all! I have no idea what's going on with scheduling for any of the seasons. Do they try to work it out so there isn't as much conflict of schedules? Road seasons tend to finish right before CX starts around here. |

My hips are just a bit grumpy after last nights run, so it feels wonderful to be able to stand whenever I want and stretch/shift my weight around to help them feel better. Sitting all day would surely not help. I've spent the majority of the morning standing, ahh! |
