tricrazy - 2011-04-09 1:02 PM My shoulders, upper arms, and neck were taking the brunt of it.

Not seeing old vs. new fit, the upper arms being sore might be from being too spread out on the bike.  Your forearms and biceps should be at a 90 degree angle when in aero.

Shoulder might be from the same or just like the neck takes time to get used to aero.

Neck shouldn't have much to do with fit.  It just takes time to get used to riding aero and trying to look forward while your torso is basically pointing towards the ground.

I used to get pain in the inner aspect of my right elbow/forearm when I first got my bike, it's kind of like Golfer's elbow.

Anyway it came back last week after doing a triple-brick workout (1hr bike/3k run x 3); do you think it's due to poor posture or gripping too hard???

Are you on a road bike or tri bike?

I've had some forearm soreness in the past but it didn't last long.  It could have been from gripping too tight, never thought about that.

If you're on a tri bike it could be your bars are maybe too far apart or close together, that would be something that you need to experiment with.

Thanks, I'm on a road bike . I've got a feeling it came from gripping too tight and probably recurred because I tensed up to get through that 3rd bike ride.

When it first occured I was doing a swim squad a couple of times  a week where they always did a few laps of sculling, this seemed to flare it up too.

Super helpful, thanks for posting that!  My kick WILL get there someday!  If there's any sport individually I would want a coach for, swimming would be it!

Ryan and I are moving to Fond du Lac (yuck) at the end of next month, and apparently they have Masters swim classes.  I want to sign up, but at the same time, I will likely be laughed out of the pool!  We'll see how much it costs!

gdale - 2011-04-09 10:19 PM

Dang...group got away from me!  Only ready through page 5 so far but wanted to get the bio posted.

Name:  gdale/George - 38 years old

Story:  2011 will be my third tri season.  Started doing tri's as a motivation to keep working out.  Pretty much only did running before that.  Saw several people at the YMCA where I work out training for tri's and it got me wanting to do it.  Loving it now and looking forward to another year.  This will be year 2 with this MG and they are a great group of peeps.  Been in other MG in the past and they just don't compare!

Family Status:  In 16 days I will have been married for 13 years to Kris.  Three boys - Jeremy (11), Tommy (9) and Cody (4).  Kris is an active runner and last year did her first multisport events - 2 triathlons and a duathlon.  Tommy also did his first kids tri in July.  Went tonight with the family to look at some puppies so we will be expanding the family soon!!!

Other Hobbies:  Youth wrestling coach, help to coach my kids soccer and baseball teams, skiing in the winter, charity work (sit on the BoD for Children's Craniofacial Assocaition and co-chair an annual charity golf tournament with my wife), reading.

2010 Races:  Skunk Cabbage Half Marathon (pr), Race for the Cure 5k (pr), Wilkes-Barre Duathlon, Musselman Sprint Tri, Cayuga Lake Olympic Tri, Time to Sperr 10k

2011 Plan:  Going longer this year.  2 half marathons (TOMORROW! and May 1st), Hopefully 1st HIM distance race (July - currently waitlisted) and 1st Marathon (October).  Another sprint or oly, possibly another du.  Other 5ks and 10ks where they fit.

What I Can Bring to the Group:  Perspective.  Family/Work/Life/Tri balance (as everyone here can provide).  An occasional bit of sarcasim (although it is hard to keep up with Fatty and Trevor) and an occasional nugget of useful information (although I am still learning more than I am giving!!)

Welcome to all the new members!!  Can't wait to get to know you guys!

George

Good luck in your half marathon tomorrow, George! And post puppy pics, please!

GO GET EM! Oh wait... You probably already have!!

If the weather holds I'll get in an additional 60-90 minute outdoor ride Thursday or Friday late afternoon. All my other training kicks off at 5:30-6AM.

i thought you said you get up insanely early?   5:30?  what's it like to sleep in that late?     ;-)

crazy woman up there in the neon shirt busts out 10-14 milers every day at 4am.  i'm lazy and make it 4:30.  some get at it really late at night.

Up at 4:30am here.  Open pool hours are from 5-6 am.  Kinda nice to get one workout in before you are awake enough to realize what you're doing :-)

Thanks for posting this link, it is a helpful article about the swim kick! When I focus on straightening my feet during the swim they often cramp. I tend to get scared when I cramp in the water, so I need to work on ankle flexibility, especially having a running background.

Name:  Jayne

Background: I'm 44 years old and have been working for the last few years to get back into shape.  I am a very active and competitive person. I used to bike regularly, but raising kids, going back to school, and working was just too much.  Now, the kids are grown, I'm working regular hours, and it's time to concentrate on me.  I'm a middle school U.S. History teacher.  Exercise is a wonderful stress-reliever.

I recently had surgery on both legs for chronic exertional compartment syndrome.  This is a condition that I've suffered from for YEARS.  It made it impossible for me to run and over the years, it was getting more and more painful just to walk fast.  I was relieved to finally find out what it was, and that there was something that could possibly help me, so I had the surgery on November 23rd.  My recovery is going well.  I'm slow (11-12 min/mile), but every week, I'm setting new PRs.  This past Saturday, I ran the first 4 miles of my life!!  Right now, I'm trying to stretch the distance and not worry about time, but I can't help wishing I was faster :-)

So, I'm TRULY a beginning runner and a beginning swimmer.  I can keep myself afloat and move forward, but I had never been taught to swim.  Believe me, this is NOT something that comes naturally if you're doing it for the first time at my age!!  But, I love a challenge.  I'm at the point where I can do a non-stop 200 yd.  I'm hoping at some point this will all click and get easier.

Family Status:  Married with 3 children (ages 22, 22, 20

Current Training:  Run, Bike, Swim 3x a week each.  Just starting to vary my running distances and working up to 15 miles/week.  Bought a new tri bike over the winter and it's finally getting warm enough to get out on it.  My swims are 1200 - 1500 yds and I vary between form and endurance workouts.

2011 Races:  I want to do a few 5k runs, and my first sprint distance triathlon on Jun 25th at Winona Lake, IN.

Weight Loss:  Yes, but I'm not putting a number on it.  I figure with the exercise it will happen.  I've lost about 15 lbs. since I started training in January, and I would be happy if that pace continued for awhile.  I NEED to learn more about good nutrition.

Overall Goal:  I want to let the athlete in me OUT!

Side Note:  I love to joke around and have fun.  Don't want to take life (or myself) too seriously.  Looks like this is just the group for me.

I look forward to getting to know everyone, hearing your stories, and working together to meet our goals!

Yes to be at the gym for a run or masters swim I'm up @4:20 to walk the dog, hydrate, grab a snack and drive there. As summer comes and distances increase it will get even earlier for runs and bikes. Masters swim I have to live with the schedule.

Anyone looking for a fun 5k....Rugged Maniac.  It is a 5k with 14 or so obstacles (real obstances, not whimpy) designed by Navy Seals.

My husband ran it yesterday, and it was awesome.  (And, they know how to party after the race).

I'm cheating with a copy/paste + edits from last time...

NAME: Brent Mathews (Scalded_Dawg) Round Two in this MG.
LOCATION:
Abilene, Texas
FAMILY:
Married (18 Years) w/ one 13 daughter (Ms. Drama!  UGH!) and the dog

RACING HISTORY:
It all started Spring 2010... 5K's then a 10K then an 8 Mile Turkey Trot (Dallas YMCA).  ZERO Tri race experience.

WORK:
Active Duty US Air Force for 18 years in aircraft maintenance. Its taken me all over the world and I've enjoyed every minute of it!

OTHER HOBBIES:
Tournament archery is my first passion... I'm a factory sponsored amateur shooter competing mostly in the Texas area in ASA 3D tournaments.  I've been shooting competitively for 6 years and bow hunting for about 9 years. I also help coach/design local youth archery programs.   From January thru July is our tournament season, so my spring and early summers are super uber BUSY.

STORY:
OK, so as you read, I'm military but as you move up in rank in the military you don't work as hard physically its more mental. All that thinking doesn't burn any calories so I was packing on the lbs; February 2010 I was just over 210... I'm only 5'7"!!!
Early spring I started, working out with some buddies from work - The Insanity videos - it was a good jump start to get me motivated. Started eating cleaner and being more active all around with overall fair results and generally felt better.
Last summer, my wife brings home these applications for a 5K race.   Now, I had run 5K's for Air Force functions before so I thought "no big deal" -- It kicked my tail! I tried to go all out from the start (like I do everything!) and burned out at 2 miles. Now I'm mad... mad at myself for a poor time, for not being prepared, for not performing my best. Now I'm driven to improve and I do just that - began training runs that very week. Researched like crazy, changed my running style and beat it. Over the next few months, we run several more 5K's and my times drop like flies (PR to date 21:22).
Most recently, I've upped my run mileage, normal training runs are now 4-7 miles.  Just did my first over 20 mile training run last week, followed by another 16 miler a few days later, at closer to my 10K pace.

I've been fighting this triathlon bug for about 5 years... I've always thought doing a tri would be fun and exciting and I view triathlons as a top fitness sport. This past August was my birthday... I gave in, moved one step closer and bought a road bike. Began training on it and now riding is by far my favorite part.

My Wife says I'm going through a midlife crisis with all this triathlon talk... my friends all agree with her and look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them about my training bricks. I love it! I feed on the chase to beat my last time or fastest pace.

To me its not about the competitors, the biggest competitor is myself and doing my personal best!

WHERE I COULD USE HELP:
Swimming - I am not strong in the swim at all; its really more of a fight for survival.   Luckily the lap pool is only 5 feet deep...  It has been getting better, though very frustrating.
Nutrition - gels, powders and bars... oh my! So many options for long training workouts, I just need to hear more personal experiences with what works and what doesn't work in regards to your long training session/race day nutrition.

WHAT I BRING TO THE GROUP:
I am highly self motivated. I enjoy doing a ton of reading/researching before making decisions.  I do have experience with obtaining corporate sponsorship, so if anyone has questions about that type of stuff just let me know.

I look forward to learning and absorbing everything I can from every one of you!

Hey Gang - back from my HM.  Finished in 1:49:40 (I think that was the official time). 5 minutes slower than last year but I was not going out for or expecting a PR today.  Given my current fitness, I went out too fast which made for a painful end to the race.  I was in the hurt locker but for the wrong reasons - HA!!  Felt good overall and expect to produce a much better showing on May 1st at my next HM.  Race report later or tomorrow.  Pizza now!

Pizza now!

George

Yay for you!!! Awesome job, George!!! Enjoy the pizza, beer, and afternoon. Hope Kris had a great 10K, too!
