Ragnar Trail

Alafia River - Lithia, FL

https://www.runragnar.com/event-detail/trail/alafia_river_fl#overview

This will require 8 runners willing to run 15 miles over the course of the weekend.

  • Set up camp on Thursday evening (December 5)
  • Running starts on Friday morning and ends on Saturday evening with campground closing at 7pm on Saturday

Why this event

  • Many Manatees have a lot of 2019 planned already. This could be a fun late season/off season event
  • One year to get ready for anyone who does not have a run base and wants to run with us
  • Mountain biking available in the area for non runners who want to hang out with us
  • No van. I view this as a positive because all of us can hang out together rather than in Van 1 and Van 2!

What will it cost?

  • It looks like RAGAR Trail races cost about $1200/team for early entrants. That works out to about $150/runner to register
  • Manatee shirts - we'll probably want to have team shirts made up for our Fabulous Photos.
  • Headlamp
  • We'll need camping gear and supplies as well. It looks like they have a Glamping option which might be worth looking into since many of us will be coming from out of town. Plus sometimes it's nice to press the Easy button. (Ragnar camping checklist)

Is anyone interested in this event?

Possibly interested! Glamping!

well damn damn damn. That is the weekend I will be in DC. Otherwise that would be perfect.

Robin - since you'll be in DC, we can have a mini-Manatee meetup! I'll be taking a fair amount of time off in November, so won't be able to make Ragnar

We're friends too!!! :-D

It just goes to show that even planning something a full year out is filled with pitfalls.

Has anyone ever raced the Goose Island half in Scottsboro, AL? The price is right ($125) and timing is good. Just looking for info on wetsuit, on course aid, organization, lodging. Anyone?

Proof of life post.

It's December. I teach band and orchestra. Therefore it's concert season. I need a nap.

And I never want to hear Christmas music again. (we've been learning our music since the beginning of October.)

PSA Cliff Bloks are very hard to eat when you run with them in an exterior pocket and the 'feels like' temperature is 23 degrees. Put them in an interior pocket. ??

Noted.....I may have to start worrying about such things in another month or so. (Already IS 23 or below most mornings here and "feels like" colder, but not doing long enough runs to warrant bringing along "nutrition" yet. February HIM (thank goodness, in NZ summer) though so like it or not I am going to have to brave the elements for maybe 2 hours at a time in January.)

Gu is also problematic in below-freezing temps--on a couple of my last long pre-IM runs I managed to get the zipper of the "gu pocket" on my hydration belt frozen shut with leaking gu from an unfinished packet. A good solution is a tri or run top with a secure pocket under the outer layers and close to your body heat. Or, failing all else, in the bra.

Then there's Haribo, gummy bears and the like from Japan. I supposed they're like Cliff Blocks but probably even less healthy? One year at Vietnam 70.3, a Japanese competitor was giggling uncontrollably at bike pickup in transition after the race. When I asked her what was so funny, she said, "Haribo glue!" then proceeded to pick up her bike, holding it only by the leftover Haribo that were now hopelessly glued to the bottom of her bento box. Probably not the best choice for 90-100 degree weather.

I have found that the sour Haribo don't stick together quite so badly, likely due to the sour powder on the outside. They do turn into little rocks in cold temperatures though.

Happy Monday everyone! I ran my 1st "official" standalone half marathon and posted a 1:33. I'm sure that's slow for some of you and fast for others but I was very happy. When I see others are running ~1:10's after insanely fast swim/bikes I wonder how it's possible.
