Mountain biking has taught me to not care which foot comes out first.  Although once the bike is on top of me cause I fell over I do find it easier to do the bottom first.  I tend to switch it up on the road bike.

I can do either if the situation demands, but unclip my drive-side foot first for the most part. I get berated for this by my hard-core cyclist buddies that say this is the wrong foot, btw - but not for the "falling over into traffic" reason that is often cited here on BT. They say it is bad form simply because unclipping your right foot exposes you to the embarrassment and horror of the infamous chainring tattoo. To my cycling friends I am known as "Goofy Foot." not sure why I started that way all those years ago (probably because my right is my dominant leg) but despite my best efforts to change it still is most natural.

bzgl40 - 2012-04-07 10:24 AMAnyone in the group ever do an ultra?  I am toying with the idea.  My last marathon was the Mt Lemmon marathon, which was basically 26.2 miles uphill and a lot of us kind of compared it to a shorter ultra.  Ever since then I have had the idea back in my mind.  I don't want to go to crazy with the distance though.

I have a fair amount of experience with ultras and multi-day "adventure" races. Training for 50k is pretty much just like marathon training, but the race is actually a little easier (to me) as you pace it much more conservatively. If it is a trail race (all but one of mine so far are) you have to take that into account with your training. 50 milers are different, as common wisdom says that you have to stack two long run days back-to-back, or some folks actually do them in the same day, morning and afternoon. I have never done a straight 100 mile run - that has to be another beast entirely. What else would you like to know?

So the only really big difference is an extra long run training wise?  A 50k is in line with the distance I was thinking of.  If I want to increase speed should I wait to train for an ultra or will the increased volume help?  Although I have never increased speed during marathon training in reality my volume for a marathon gets me about to the starting point of good running volume.   Hard to run large volumes when you are slow and still swim and bike.  I did find this training plan but it seems light on volume from what I was expecting.

For 50k I never did two back-to-back long runs - that was for 50 miles. Because so many ultras are on trails, I just added more rugged trail runs into the mix. I continue to do that anyway as it seems to strengthen the ankles, knees, and hips a lot more than the road without all the pounding. I don't really think my run volume increased much at all for 50k, BECAUSE of the biking and swimming. You just cannot underestimate the fitness that these bring to the equation. For me the biggest difference between the Marathon and 50k is pacing. I've gotten beat up a little bit for suggesting it here before, but (for me) I think 50k is a little easier than a marathon in the same way IM seems "easier" than HIM - the pacing is just sooo different. The trail ones are especially tough because once you hit the single track you can really get pushed by the folks behind you and wind up not running your race. My best successes have been to actually run from behind and not really go until about the 20 mile mark - you can really reel a lot of folks in this way. 50 miles is tough no matter how you pace it - it beats me to death. Keep working that Achilles, Fred - that does not have to be a chronic condition, at least from my own experience.

Fred D - 2012-04-08 8:56 AM Weekend of call is about 1/2 over, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I don't have any experience with ultra running events, so don't know much about it. I don't think my achiles would ever put up with the huge running volume needed. Btw good poll question about which foot you unclip with while riding. I'm right handed and unclip with the left. What do you do and why?

I'm right handed. I almost always unclip the right foot, but I can do both. I also prefer to keep my left hand on the handlebars while doing things like grabbing water or food, or adjusting my sunglasses with my right. No idea why. It just feels natural.

I had a big training day yesterday - I think I'm going to get good on hills fairly quickly out here!

Tough run this morning. I'm not sure if it was due to a week in Cozumel diving and traveling or what, but my legs hurt BAD today. Planned for 18 but around 12 I knew it wasn't going to happen. Actually was having doubts around mile 2. I barely eaked out 16 and by then my legs hurt so bad I could barely stand in the shower. Crazy. I prefer to unclip with my left foot first. No idea why, it just came naturally that way.

I usually unclip my right foot, I'm right handed..... 9 hilly miles this morning. Due to pollen I think I am running at about 75% lung capacity..... Great job rudy, let us know how your legs feel on the 10 miler today.

Right handed...unclip left foot...has always felt natural to me.

Didn't get in the longer ride I wanted today...partly due to fog and partly due to me going back to sleep while waiting for visibility to improve. Still enjoyed a good hour on the bike...now looking forward to Easter festivities with family and friends.

Hope you are all enjoying a wonderful weekend.

I right handed and always unclip with my left foot. However, the reason I do this is because in England we drive on the left, so the pavement is on my left side.

Good job on your race Rudy.

I'm left handed and unclip my right.  Mostly because that's the side with the curb.  I also have more coordination and power with my left, so if I have a hard time clipping my right back in, I can still pedal with just my left.

Got in a good long run today.  Felt really strong.  Downish week for me coming up.

Home after a couple of days away with no internet - just got caught up.  Got in two decent rides + long run of the year (just 14km), so all in all a good weekend.

Just got home from LA. Bit stiff/sore from the race---but to be expected. Easy trainer ride tomorrow planned. I'm also left handed and unclip right. I do pretty much everything but write with my right side though.

Right handed and almost always unclip the right foot.  Never thought about why, just habit now I guess.

Up early for some bike time in the trainer.  Maybe a  brick run, more than likely though the run will be at lunch time or after work.

Went for a short run to get out again yesterday and a ride with Sicone this morning.

If its just a stop at lights or a junction i unclip the left and to dismount the right

Good morning!Lefty here - great to see several others but I unclip on my left too - i am very left dominant.
Monday weigh-in: holding steady at 124.5 on my scale. I feel like i did very well with weekend eating which is usually my downfall. I am guessing over the next two weeks the weight will start to move a bit more.

One of my big to-do list items is to go get some compression socks. I find that the weekend volumes take a bite out of my legs and it's time to get a pair. Who has them? How do you like them?

I have today off as a holiday - i am guessing 'Easter Monday' used to be more of a holiday across the country but now basically only government workers (me), banks and schools get the day off. The only snafu is that means the pool that is used for our group swim is closed tonight so we need to do some shuffling of the plan for the week.

It's windy today but i might actually take my bike out this afternoon. Have a great day everyone!

TSimone - 2012-04-08 9:34 AM So in my convalescence the last few days I read Iron War.  Anyone else read it and if so, thoughts?

I hope to be back in the saddle on Tuesday.  I can't afford any more periods of down time like this and it has really played with my mind.

Haven't read it - was it good? Is it worth the read?

I did read a review saying that some liberties were taken with the story but it's still a good read.
