ready....serious question from me today...

So this is my off-week for the month.....slowing down the training, this week and ramping up again next week.

Today is technically scheduled to be an off-day for me.
My coach had me do a 1000m timetrial on Wednesday. I did it, but was boxed in my lane as I swam at a very busy time. So my time wasnt necessarily reflective of an actual 1000m TT. So, should I reswim it today at lunch? Or just move on, it is what it is.

Take the day off...  Don't think about me out there working out...

i thought about all of you when my alarm went off at 0400.  i cursed all of you.  then i got up and ran 11.5.  is that ok?  ;-)

At least a few of you were productive.  Although today is technically an off day for me too I didn't even here the alarm and got up at 6:30..ahem..when I'm suppose to be walking out the door.  Oh well, Happy Friday.  This afternoon the weather is suppose to clear out and be 70.  I can't wait.

TRAINING QUESTION FOR EVERYONE:

When I initially chose a training program it was with Lonestar in mind - 20 weeks away. So, I picked the 20 week sprint training program and that is what I've been training to (maybe a little overtraining, actually). 8 weeks later I really like the progress I'm making so I signed-up for an indoor mini-sprint (300m swim, 8 mi bike, 2 mi run) at the local Y. It's one month away, 12 weeks after starting training, or roughly 8 weeks before I'm finished with the 20 week training program.

My question is: Do I need to taper for this mini-sprint? If so, how far in advance? What would be a good level of training during this taper? I really don't want to change training programs because I really am looking forward to doing a full sprint at the end of April. Any suggestions?

Use your mini-sprint as a training day.... MAYBE take it easy the day before, but enjoy the day, practice transitions, practice nutrition, practice pacing, practice smiling, practice your mental game.... AND HAVE FUN!!!!

No taper necessary! As Birdy said: treat it like a training day, don't put a lot of pressure on yourself to finish in any particular time (which I think is a good thought for any first triathlon), and enjoy the experience!

X 3....think of it as a big brick training day, have fun, have no expectation, work on transitions, and listen to your body for the couple of days right after the event.

Thanks for the input, guys.....This leads me to more questions:

When during the mini sprint should I eat a Gu? After the swim, during the bike? Or how many minutes into the sprint?

Also, what kind of transitioning is typical of an indoor tri? Shouldn't I just wear my tri shorts/top to swim in, then slip on my running shoes to do the spinner bike without changing clothes? Would I get chafed if I didn't change clothes since I'm going to be inside and my clothes won't dry like they would if I were outdoors? Do I need some of that super glide stuff to put on my thighs/butt? (LOL!) I could transition directly to the run after the spinner if I don't use two different kinds of shoes....Am I missing anything important in terms of transitioning here?

OK, I'm off for a swim. Check in with y'all later

For a sprint, you don't reallyl have to take one, but if you do want one, probably T1.

For intoor tri's they usually give you free time to transition between clothes, but if you don't I would just wear tri-top/bottom.

Pretty sure you can't ever go wrong with body-glide, so when in doubt, use it.

I wouldn't think a GU is necessary, maybe have an energy drink of some sort available for the bike and run.  What are the arrangements for your tri?  I've heard of indoor tris that give you specific times for event and only those events are timed, not the transition.  How is yours organized?    Otherwise I would advise wearing exactly what you want to wear for the LS sprint.  As Birdy said, use this as practice and that includes the clothes. Swim in the tri shorts and then bike and run in them.  Yes your feet may get wet but they will on race day as well,  be it from water, sweat, etc.  IT IS ALL PART OF THE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS OF THE SPORT - IT'S GREAT!     You should have trained in your outfit prior to race day so you'll know how it feels.  Body Gluide (or a butt cream equivilant) is always good when riding a bike but only YOU will know where it needs to be applied.  One of my favorite tricks for transition clothes changing is to have your socks rolled down to mid foot and dusted with baby powder. This makes them very easy to roll onto wet feet.

Wanted to pop by and say GOOD LUCK RACERS!  Have fun and get back to us with your successes!

A special good luck to Tony, Sam and those on the East Coast who are affected by this latest storm.  We barely have any snow left on the ground here and you guys continue to get pounded.  Be safe.

I am a solo flyer this weekend.  The man headed up to our house to snowmobile with the boys.  Not a lot on tap--a few workouts, the facial I missed two weeks ago and getting stuff organized to pack.  I will be watching the commercials on Sunday and I guess the game too .

PS. Trina, I agree with the group, no taper, use it as a training day.  I would drink H20 and not worry about gels and sports drinks.  You will be done before you know it.  Why risk an upset tummy if you haven't trained with it?

Hey there MG!  I'm glad to be at the tail end of a very long, very tiring and very frustrating week!  I'm taking the day off from training, unfortunately not from work thoughFrown.  I feel like I need it (actually what I need is about a week off from my life in general, but that ain't gonna happen - not right now at least).  I'm wondering if adding the Pilates class twice a week, along with my regular workouts, is just too much for me.  Good thing I don't plan to train for a HIM or IM - I'd never survive, LOL!  I'm getting most of my workouts in but they're harder than usual and I seem to be more tired.  I'm hoping that it's just the stress of a crappy week at work and at home that's the problem.  Hopefully a day off and a semi-easy weekend will get me back on the right track for next week.

On a better noteSmile, I'm looking forward to my race tomorrow morning.  I'm not sure what the weather will be like (it's snowing now and we're supposed to get 2-4" by late tonight), but it'll be nice to get outside for a good run.  Running on the TM just doesn't have the same mind-clearing, stress-relieving effects as an outside run does.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  I'll try to check in when I can.

Happy Friday everyone!  I just finished my 7.25 mile run on the treadmill in the basement.  Thankfully, the kids were angels and let me get it in.  Will be doing my normal weekend thing tomorrow and Sunday...skiing.  I wish some of that snow that is going to hit the south would make it up this way...we haven't had one good snow this year.  We will probably get the big one in April -  when I don't want it!

Good luck to those racing over the weekend.  And for those getting snow who don't want it, at least go out and play in it for me!

I am looking forward feeling nervous about this weekend.  Wife took the older 2 kids to visit their cousins in the midwest, so I am flying solo this weekend with the youngest (who turns 2 in March).  Add in the 20 inches of snow, it looks unlikely that I will get in a good workout for the rest of the weekend other than shoveling and chasing after the little man.

On the bright side, however, I did a full hour of core/abs work with my trainer today using those TRX suspension straps.  Holy cow does that stuff work you.  Holding a plank with your feet suspended in separate and independent straps is tough core work.  At least it is for me.

My quad/IT band has been aching for the past week or two.  So when I went on a trip this week (3 days in NYC, i brought along a baseball and used it like a hard foam roller while I was sitting in meetings.  It hurt like a $%^& worked like a charm, and I had no trouble getting it through security and nobody gave it a second thought.

LOL, come mountain biking with me tomorrow!

Moved my Sunday run to today due to all the snow.

Was nice outside running before the snow gets too deep.

Janet-
Good luck on your race tomorrow!  Sounds like a day off is just what you need.  Hope you have decent weather for the race...that is one way to clear the mind, that's for sure!

Sometimes these hard weeks are super necessary to stress the body a little beyond your comfort zone...good for you getting that Pilates in there, it'll go a long ways towards keeping injuries away!  Now, if i could only practice what I preach.... ah, i wish there were more (non-working) hours in the week

Hi group -

Well my race for Sat. was cancelled yesterday and the snow has started here.  It's supposed to continue for the next 24 hrs. ending about 2-3' later.  Sunday's run ought to be fun.

A big thank you to those to sent inspires and emails after reading about my impending mental breakdown yesterday.  I am swamped at work and have a lot going on at home in addition to training.  Today was going to be my big catch up day so I could get myself back on track.  The storm certainly threw a wrench into those plans and Arlington county cancelled school last night before the snow even started.  I was about to lose it.

And in steps the best husband in the world who took all the pressure and stress off my shoulders by volunteering to stay home w/ the kids today so I could get a long list of errands done.  On top of everything I was able to keep my swim lesson and had a huge break through.

So right now as I sit in my kitchen looking out our big bay window at the white wonderland and cooking dinner, I can take a deep breath and enjoy the time w/ the family and enjoy the snow.

:-)

Happychick- welcome to the mainland again...The 70.3 you were talking about? Lake Stevens??

I'm not there yet...we will be moving May 1 but yes, Lake Stevens is the 70.3 I'm talking about.  So long as I can keep up on my training and things go well with the move/house hunting, I'm hoping to do it.  My hubby thinks I might be pushing it but we'll see!
I'll be there! Hope you like hills... there aren't many flat spots on the course. The swim is great because of the submerged buoy line; no need to sight, just look down and follow the rope! Birdy is right, though: you're practically in Canada. I think Lynden is about 3 or 4 miles from the border, and Bellevue/Seattle is 2 hours south. If you ever want to take a tour of the Lake Stevens course, let me know!

I will take you up on that but we won't be there until May!   And it is totally official ~ my hubbies retirement paperwork was approved today!!

I might take you up on that offer! I'd like to do the race this year, but it's going to depend on when my parents take my kids for their annual Grandparent Camp (translation: hubby's and my annual SCUBA trip!). That weekend may be a travel weekend to get the kids to Truckee, CA, but I've let the fam know that I'd love to do the race, so we'll see. Whether or not I race it, I'd love to ride the course sometime, but I am not yet as fast on hills as I'd like to be (is it OK to say that? I was going to say I'm really slow on hills but was afraid of Suzy's TWHACK, so I tried to put a better spin on it, so to speak!)!!
I'm always up for a ride, and I'm sure Birdy could be persuaded to join us as well...

Ryan---- Not until she joins us for a Tuesday night run !!!! Just playing.... Anytime (well almost any, ok, maybe sometime, most likely can make it, Let me get back to you!!!)

Tuesday night run, huh?!

Man I've been gone for a long time.  Whole body's sore, knees hurt, worked up some great sweats...how exactly do you log rewiring an OLD farmhouse?  My nephew bought an old house and is getting married in April.  He wants a COMPLETE remodel done before then so a few of family members are busting tail to get it done.

Birdie, all those cars and the keys in your trunk.  I would love to set off a few M80's just to here all those alarms together with no way to shut them off.

We aren't getting the huge snow, but enough.  I'm nervous because Robin is supposed to leave at 5am for a 2.5 hour drive for her bowling team can bowl in regionals.

Hope you guys that are getting hit by the latest storms are doing OK and please be safe in your travels.  We are just getting rain here....and plenty of it.  Supposed to be clear and cool Sunday for our 16 miler.  May try to get to the pool today...I need it.

Very busy week at work....been a long time since I said that

Youngest son and his wife are coming over for dinner...on the menu:  roasted pork tenderloin w/ citrus glaze, wasabi mashed potatoes and zucchini w/ parmesan....toasted pound cake (not homemade ) with vanilla ice cream.

Hope everyone has a great weekend..considering.

Steve
