Seems like I need to do some cleaning and replacing.

Question for the bike people, I have some slight cuts in the tire from riding in the litter free streets of New York.  do you replace the tire or can you wait.  My main concern is I have a race next week.

BTW I'm a big fan or probikekit.com, 2 wks ago they had a special on continental tires, i bought 2 4000s tires for $33 shipped.

I would personally replace them before the race if possible (I'm paranoid) though most of mine seem to have small little cuts in them from time to time.

Yeah PBK is great if they have it in stock.

Sorry Red, but Tony is right on this one. This has been true for decades regardless of when your bike was made or who made it. If you ride it regularly you should replace the chain about once a year. I am bad, bad, bad about cleaning my chain. My road bike is going into its 3rd summer and I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've cleaned the chain! If I do a wet/dirty ride, it feels like I'll just be riding again on gross roads so I'll clean it next time.  I have taken it in to the LBS for major tune-up (last summer pre-HIM) and they checked the chain closely and felt I had a lot more ride in it. I will replace it this summer for sure for sure. Gonna try to be better about cleaning my tri bike's chain... Or that's my goal, at least!!

Easiest way to keep up with the chain is to put it on the trainer, hold the towel on the chain like they do in the video to clean it off, then oil, then wipe again, and you're done.  Takes 5 minutes.

LOL, a clean drivetrain will probably save you guys more watts than wheels, helmet, etc..

Happy Friday everyone!

Did my first OWS of the year this morning.  It was great!  Water was pretty warm...one guy swam with out a wetsuit (don't know if it was that warm!).

Headed out this afternoon for a campout with Tommy.  Should be a fun weekend.  Looks like the weather is going to cooperate too.

Good luck to all you racers this weekend!!!

SSMinnow - 2010-06-02 4:43 AM Is it really Wednesday???? Then it must be "TELL US ABOUT YOUR RACE" day....so who's doing what?

For the rest of us, lay out your best tip on hill climbing?  There has been so much about biking lately, from Tony's kids to Kyla's super stud ride.....so talk to us!

Hey gang!!  I'm a little late to the "who's racing this weekend party".....but I am!  I have a sprint tomorrow and will be volunteering for the oly on Sunday.  I'm a little worried about tomorrow though.  I've been down & out since Monday with the stomach flu.  I feel better today but am a bit concerned about eating anything before the race tomorrow morning.  Hopefully all goes well.  It will be an open water swim, but most likely not wet suit legal.  However, to set my mind at ease, a friend of mine emails me an article about a 78 pound catfish recently pulled out of the lake we are swiming in.  Undecided  What would we do without friends????

Good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend!!!!!

Guessing there isn't really any difference between this and the 310 really is there?

Same GPS hardware so will have the same limitations as the Garmin does in the water, HR strap is ANT+ so won't do HR in water either.

This one is cheaper though isn't it?

Where is it?  Any chance for noodling and catching some of its friends?  Seriously, though, do not worry about catfish.  they will stay in their lairs and be very afraid of all the activity and thrashing about by the triathletes.

Good luck in the sprint.

DougRob - 2010-06-04 8:40 AM FWIW: Every two or thee years you should consider replacing your freewheel as well as the gears wear down as well.

What's the freewheel?

I thought one of the other "bike" guys would have gotten this for you already......Cool

Freewheel

The mechanism that makes coasting possible. A ratchet mechanism that allows the rear sprocket(s) to drive the wheel when pedaled forward, but allows the wheel to turn forward independently even when the sprockets are not turning. In other words, the freewheel is the part which makes coasting possible.

Freewheels are normally sold with the sprockets attached, so this term is frequently used as a synonym for a cluster.

A standard freewheel attaches to a hub by screwing on to external threads that are part of the hub. The action of pedaling tightens the freewheel down on the threads, so no tools are required to install a freewheel.

To remove a freewheel requires a special tool, commonly called a "freewheel puller" or "freewheel extractor"

This tool is a splined unit that may be mounted in a vise or turned with a wrench. The splines engage matching splines in the interior (non-rotating) part of the freewheel body. Different brands of freewheels have used different spline patterns, but there is a recent tendency to standard on the Shimano pattern.

Older freewheels had simple notches and matching extractors with two or four "bosses" (prongs.) This obsolete system was prone to failure, and it is easy to ruin the tool and the freewheel while trying to remove the freewheel. When using a boss-type freewheel puller, the tool should be secured against the freewheel by tightening down theaxle nut or quick release skewer.

The standard I.S.O. thread for freewheels is 1.375 x 24 TPI, the same as for standard I.S.O bottom brackets.

appears that way.  public release looks like september 2010.  never mind.  rei has them in stock.  ha, guess someone forgot to tell timex.  i didn't look for dimensions but if its the same size as a standard ironman watch then reading four fields might be tough.  dunno.

The weather in Minocqua is the pits, it's been pouring rain all morning long, strong winds and it is COLD, 55F.  Of course, I am supposed to do an hour OWS today....anyone feel sorry for me yet?  Told myself by 1:30 CST I would get my rear end down to the pier and actually in the water.  It is really rough so it would be ideal practice heading into my HIM which tends to have 4 footers because of how shallow it is.  Zero boats out today so the liklihood of becoming fodder for the propeller is very low.

All this talk about technology, reminds me how much I hate my 310XT.  It is going back to Garmin for repair/replacement.  Never been so disappointed in a piece of tri equipment, ooops except my tri bike.Yell

Good luck to our racers.  There are so many of you that I ame excited to hear all the details.  Hurry back and give us the scoop!

Just a little braggin on my wife Kristine.  She ran in the Chase Corporate Challenge last night and her team took 4th place out of 132 teams (in the women's field)!!  She finished in 26:37 (3.5 mile race)...slightly off her goal pace but she was happy with the results.  It was also the first time that our company (Corning) has fielded a woman's team in the top 5.  Hopefully she is just as successful in her first tri on Sunday!

Our company also won the mixed team event qualifing the team members to travel to Singapore next spring for the championship.  The overall women's winner was also from Corning.   Pretty cool.

Brag over.

Dura-Ace Chain, I normally get them from Probikekit.com but they seem to be out of them at the moment. This place has them for a similar price

http://thebikesmiths.com/j/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=17flypage=flypage.tpl&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=59&product_id=39&vmcchk=1&Itemid=59

While your at it have you changed your cables and housing?  Should do that every year or so also, will help you shift/brake much easier if you change them often.

i changed mine a month prior to LS.  but now my front brake is screwed up. when i hit the brake it works but won't open back up. so i have to reach down and open it by hand.  and the cable seems to be stuck in the lever that opens up the brake to make the wheel come off easier.  i'll post vid this weekend to show you bike peeps what i'm talking about.

Re-read this - problem with the brakes is most likely dirty cable housing - replace the cable and the housing and I bet it works like new...
