1. How to approach it.
2. Good books to read on the topic.

For how to approach it, I would say it depends on your comfort level with groups but since you are strong on the bike, I would try to go out with a B group to start and become more comfortable with the overall group dynamics. Hand signals, voice signals, rotation, length of pulls, sprints/climbs, etc; while you would very likely be able to hand with the fastest group, going out with the slower group for a couple of rides will allow you to focus on the group riding as opposed to hanging on while trying to learn that stuff.

Also, if you have a few friends who group ride and a nice flat field, you can do a bunch of riding shoulder to shoulder, bumping elbows, handing around water bottles, leaning against each other, all at low speeds, it will help with your comfort level when you are in a tight group at speed.

Once you are comfortable with that, then I would go with a group that is challenging for you to ride with; one where you find yourself hanging near the back just hanging on sometime after the halfway point (or one where you are solo off the back a couple of times and ride home with your tail between your legs ). Try to get as much group riding as you can and learn to soft pedal as much as you can and take steady pulls at the front as opposed to the triathlete five minute pull and then get dropped off the back. Get used to the fact that the effort will usually go up over a roller but keep the gap small and stay on the wheel as opposed to riding steady. Get to know who gets to the front and drops the hammer, who will ramp up the pace, who just takes nice steady pulls, etc.

Finally, I would then start contesting sprints and hill climbs; you'll know where these are and you will be able to position yourself in the ride so that you are in a good spot to go hard for the sprints and climbs; this will prepare you for road racing where you need to focus on riding as hard as you need to stay with the group; whether this means coasting or redlining, your goal should be to do whatever you need to stay with the group and recover when you get the chance.

For books, Coggan's (which I assume you have) does a decent job of describing a bit of the dynamics of road racing but beyond that, I've never read a book that was a great guide to road racing. However, you should be able to learn what you need from riding with a good group as in addition to the riding you will be doing, there are generally lots of people willing to offer advice to someone who is learning the ropes.

If there's any way to send cards to her and her sister, I'd like to know, too. Thanks.

Thanks, and thank you to everyone for your well wishes.  It has helped.  Sorry to be a downer one more time, but I just posted this in TT.  Thanks.

Folks, thanks to everyone for their well wishes for my friend injured in Boston.  It has truly helped me sort through this.

I'm sure there are more of you that might know someone that was hurt.  I wanted to provide an opportunity, for those of you that have asked, to send your well wishes directly to my friend.  Also, please feel free to list mailing addresses for other people injured so we can show them the BT love.  However, please exercise discretion before listing someone's home or hospital address.

My friend is Nicole.  She's had two surgeries so far and has two breaks in a leg, a broken ankle, soft tissue damage and a severed Achilles.  You may of seen the picture of her with red sleeves, sitting awkwardly, covered in blood essentially at ground zero of the blast.  It could have easily been worse.  Her sister, Erika, was also severely injured and had a partial leg amputation.

Nicole swam D1 at an SEC school.  She is a personal trainer, triathlon coach and swim instructor.  She is an avid runner and previously qualified for Kona.  She loves dogs.  Most importantly, she is one of the sweetest people I know and never holds back a smile.

If you are so inclined, please drop her a note at the address below.  Thank you.

Study break.

Training has not gone to plan this week so far but I suppose I went to med school for 4 years to pass this exam so I should probably make sure that happens. Operation miscellaneous is on at a coffee shop. 6 hr exam #1 tomorrow.

Might hop on the trainer later to clear my head if my pre-exam anxiety isn't too excessive. Doubtful, but we will see.

Still kind of weird getting used to meters at Masters. Almost like I have to learn how to swim again as the splits dropped a bit. Whatever keeps up the motivation though. Shoulder did noticeably better tonight.

Hoping spring comes back here again soon.  Walked outside yesterday to snow flurries.  WTF?  Nothing that stuck but did have them on and off throughout the day.  Chilly this morning but should start to warm up again soon

Does anyone have big (or not so big) plans for the weekend?  I'm hoping to get some outdoor rides in - weather for Saturday is a bit sketchy right now with rain and winds of 50 km/hr gusting to 100 Undecided.  Sunday is looking decent though.  Also doing the masters swim meet on Saturday night which should be fun.

Probably swimming as there are road closures all over the place here with the rain. I think schools and various work buildings are having trouble with flooding as well.

Maybe I'll trade in my car for a hovercraft.

Last weekend before a 10k, so Saturday is 6miles with 3@race pace and Sunday is ~10, with last 2.5 near race pace.  Going to target a 1-2hr and 2-3hr Z2-3 ride Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but that'll depend on weather and how the legs feel...

I'm leaving for Vegas tomorrow morning for a wedding.  I really wish I could run, as I won't be bringing my bike obviously....I'll be hitting up my fourth swim for the week tomorrow before we fly out, also might try to sneak in a trainer ride if possible.  But really wishing running wasn't such a painful task!

Question for you about your masters swim meets -- are most people who participate "real" swimmers (like swam competitively growing up)?  Our masters group goes to meets on occasion and I've been somewhat interested in joining them, but a) I can't seem to figure out diving in off the blocks without my goggles ending up around my neck, and b) I'm an okay swimmer at best (decent for triathlons, I guess, but certainly nothing like those who grew up swimming).  Just curious if I'd be way out of my league at a masters swim meet!

They usually have times listed for previous meets.  Back when I was actually swimming, I checked out the times for some local meets and it was, well, discouraging.

Haven't actually been to a meet yet, but from what I've seen from following my Masters team a number of people there will likely have been swimmers growing up, but there were always a few triathletes others who weren't. Go for it and have fun. I'm going to get wasted by the fastest ones in an upcoming meet, but it will be fun just being in the competitive setting. A bunch of others on the team aren't any faster than I am (though they only swim now) and love going to these.

ETA: Oh, and at least in the meets I've seen, they have seed times which are basically estimated swim times for the event. And they group the swim waves so that you're swimming against others of similar ability even though placing later will be against your age group. That might change in various levels of meets, but at Wisconsin State meet, that's what they did.

Going to be a big volume weekend for me as I'm in the last build of HIM training.  Likely a 70 mile ride with a 1k swim Saturday, and a 13.5 mile run Sunday.  It'll be my longest ride of the year, and I've only ran that far this year once (but felt really good doing so).

It's a learning experience      Other than climbs, I find it hard to keep to a certain power level on the flats with lights, etc.

Yeah, it's just something you sort of get used to, but also good to peek at NP if you're unsure.  On my Tuesday group ride, there is a lot of pace variation due to lights, regrouping areas, or just short areas we ride a little easier because it's unsafe to really hammer.  AP for these rides are usually around 200, which might seem low for what is supposed to be a hard ride...but NP is always above 250.

When you're riding on a computrainer...you're not going to see that kind of variation between AP and NP.
