Hi all.  I ended up taking yesterday as a rest day - unintentionally.  My left foot was a little tender on the top yesterday after the long slow run i did with my sister and i woke up and that side was fine yesterday but i developed a super tender area on my right leg that's now pretty much my whole soleus area.  It better not be any achilles issues.

Any tips for my recovery or thoughts on what it might be?

Luckily it's a recovery week and i do have a rest day scheduled so i can move any missed workouts to Friday - which looks like just a bike with short T run will need to move.  Tonight, i'll swim since yesterday's was cancelled.

Though, I did pick up compression socks yesterday and a giant tub of Ironman Perform.  I am hoping the socks will help with recovery from weekend efforts.

mndymond - 2012-04-10 8:28 AM Morning. For my IM last year my longest ride was 6:00 on the trainer. I had a lot of time conflicts leading up to the race and had to get my ride done on a day that it was downpouring. I did 2-3 5:30 rides as well. Those were probably not long enough given that my IM bike split was 7:20, so for my IM next year I will probably try and get a 6:30-7hr ride in. sMy longest bike for HIM training will most likely 3 hrs. I just don't have room in my schedule to get much more in at a single time. I think I will try to do more shorter efforts at a high effort level to prepare rather than getting in more long rides just due to time constraints. In my mind it isn't optimal but my key workouts that I like to have completed before a HIM are probably a 2k freestyle/3hr ride and have done a half marathon distance run. I mentally feel more prepared going into the race. I think for the next IM it will probably be a 4500m freestyle/6:30-7hr bike/25-30k run.
That's another good topic. The 'BIG DAY WORKOUT' (all caps lol, sorry) There is a school of thought of doing the big day. Swim 3K Bike 5 hrs Run 1 hr or something like that. There are pro's and con's, but I am debating doing one of these about 8 weeks out. Thoughts?

Never tried it to that degree.  Biggest training day has been long bike, 90 miles I believe and a brick run of about 7 miles.  Which I guess for me would be about the same as your example absent the swim.

Fred, i think i read about this on the Iron Distance forum and was there some rest in between each leg?

I think the 'big day' would be an excellent way to test nutrition over longer distances as well as pacing efforts.  One of the toughest things to do is the swim to bike brike and it's hard to estimate how the fatigue on the swim will impact the start of the bike.

I probably won't do that mostly because of logisitics.  I am however looking for a HIM race as a tune-up.  A few options.  any thoughts on how far out from IM that should be?  I am looking at two options on the weekend of June 24th and one July 8th.

There was a long rest period in the iron forum discussion.  Which leads to the question how anyone could use it to determine nutrition if the legs aren't immediately consecutive?

Sorry!  I’ve been quietly training and still owe the group a bio.  I got missed on the list made TSimone.  At first I thought I got fired from the group.

I weighed in yesterday at 173 lbs.  Training is back to normal as can be.  Still lots of work stress.

Biopsy results are in and cyst is totally benign.  What a relief!!!! When we found out about the massive on the pancreas we were not good.  Catherine was totally freaking out after father in law, less than five years ago pasted due to pancreatic cancer.  That was so clear in Catherine mind to see him go like that.  She was very close to him.

Anyway great news!!!  There has not been a dry in the house since the news.  Thank you ALL for your prayer and support!!!!!!

Wow...never heard of "the big day" before.  Sounds brutal.  I think WTC needs to come out with the TQIM 105.45 (Three Quarter IM)...LOL.

Actually though...I kind of like the idea of a 1.8 mile swim, 84 mile bike, 20 mile run.  If they ever came out with it...or a local race became available like this...I would definately consider doing it...probably more so than the full distance.

They did come out with this. It was about 4 years ago. They called it something like the Tri 105 series. It was a major flop and they ended up canceling some of the races.

Swim - I'm a bit slower in open water than the pool, plus I hold back a little since it's my weakest area and I don't want to blow up.
Bike - Sprint distance, definitely faster.  HIM, about the same as I tried to keep the training internsity close to race day intensity for the distance.
Run - much faster (when I'm not walking)  This is where I'm strongest and will typically run about :45-1:00min/km during a Sprint distance.

Bummer...but I can see how most people wouldn't appeal to it.

There is a race in Nova Scotia that might appeal to you.  Full swim, full bike, but you can do a half run.  I know the area well, it is an awesome place for a course (use to live there)

Ya...I wasn't sayin that I would do that all in one day...those were more just specific milestones I would like to hit before the race! Haha. My long day last year was a 5:30 ride with a 30min run after. I think doing a 30min swim-6hr ride-1hr run though might be something I attempt next time. I think the main utility to a long day like that is more mental and helps to build confidence. It def has a fitness gain but the recovery from it might negate fitness effects? I don't know?

Great news James!

Re: the big workout day: I think it's more of a confidence booster than an actually physically beneficial workout. Though, we know that long course racing is a very mental endeavor... so, if you need it mentally, do it. If you don't, you can probably make better use of a workout that is going to be that costly on the recovery end.

Re: speeds in training vs workouts: I'm usually in the same ballpark on the swim (my swim pace is ~1:35/100m in practice. My logs reflect 2:00/100m simply because that's my rest intervals included in my total swim time). Biking - faster in a sprint, but not really in any other distance. Running - much faster on race day. I'm very driven by my adrenaline in that event. I'm interested to see how my training changes - my best friend here who is also a triathlete trains significantly faster than me, but races slower.

I feel like I'm finally set up with a group to train with (Tucson Tri Girls) that have many members faster than me. I've been wanting this for a while - and I can finally fit group workouts into my schedule! And with that, I'm off to track practice.

Always great to find a group to train with, especially when they're slightly faster than you.

Speaking of which, I'm off for a group ride...which basically turns into a race.

Boy I guess they will let just anybody into this group....

Seriously James, really glad to find out you are in - and I am way out of the loop, I did not know you were going through such a scare with your daughter. Really great news - and I am sure you are beyond relieved. My wife's family has some history of pancreatic cancer - it is nasty stuff indeed. I look forward to catching up to see how your training is coming along.
