Pacing question:  I did a 30+ mile ride on Sat, and was generally thinking of trying to keep my HR in zone 2.  I have a Garmin 705, which shows speed, cadence, HR, etc.  But when I kept it in what I thought was Z2, I was absolutely crawling along.  When I was going what I thought was an appropriate minimum RPE, I was in what I had understood to be middle to high Z3.  This leads to several questions:

1. Am I identifying my HR zones correctly?  My max HR on the bike is about 180 or 181, which I get doing hill repeats on a certain hill.  My Garmin says (and I thought it was accurate) that my zones are as follows:

Z2 is 110 to 130
Z3 is 130 to 149
Z4 is 149 to 168
Z5 is 168 to 185

2. Assuming that I am identifying the zones correctly, and even if I am not identifying the zones correctly, I would really appreciate any insight in how to keep myself in the right zone without feeling like I am going so slow that I will almost fall over.

3. Any other input/insight to how I should think about this stuff would be welcome.  I am working on preparing for longer races and everything I have read/heard is that you want to stay in Z2 for as much of the bike as possible.  I am having a hard time doing that.

Thanks.

Have you done a TT to establish HR zones?  It is definitely where I would start.   Worst thing would be if you were lollygagging around in zones that are too low for you.... I did that for quite a while.

WOW.  That answered a big part of it.  I did a brick yesterday consisting of all three events.  Using my HR from the 20 min period bike identified in your link into the calculator shows the following zones:

1 - Recovery108 - 137
2 - Extensive Endurance137 - 148
3 - Intensive Endurance148 - 155
4 - Sub-Threshold156 - 165
5a - SuperThreshold166 - 169
5b - Anaerobic Endurance170 - 175
5c - Power176 - 181

It basically kicks up my Z2 to where I had thought my Z3 was.  And assuming that my HR would be higher if I were only doing the bike portion, the zones would be even higher.  Thanks for helping clear that up for me.  I guess it is that whole part of the BT website that I have not tapped into.  Very helpful.

Thanks Trevor.  This is something I'd like to work on this year.  In fact, I have a 1 mile OWS race this weekend and I'm going to try what the article says.  I'm thinking since I breath most comfortably to my right I should position myself to the front and right of the pack and just keep picking up people as they pass me and try to hang on as long as I can.

okay, just thinking about this VT thing.  In an IM, don't the men's top times usually beat the women's by an hour or so?  The Boston Q time difference is 30 minutes or so......

So what's our differential?!?!

So my day today turned into quite a workout day. 1600 yds at lunch, just over 8 mile long run (starting a marathon program mixed in with everything), and then 5 miles out and 5 mile back biking to and from a group cycling picture.

Met with my coach today, he wants me to shoot for 6:30 pace in a 5k tomorrow.

LOL, should be interesting... I actually added that up and that would be a 20:09 5k.

Pretty sure I can hold that for one mile.  LOL, Sam might have to finish and come back with a stretcher for me at mile 1.1.

Zero.  We told the guys we were going to put them under the table fair and square.  I am kind of amazed they are winning by so little, especially since they have Ryan on their team!  We're not dead yet, I do have the chance to improve my times this Sunday, but aint no way I can make up that much time on my own. Who can push themselves a little harder?

I need to add up my fastest 12 consecutive miles from my race this weekend... I really do myself a disservice by having hills every time I ride my bike, though. My race had two hills in it, so those will count in my average, sadly. Dunno what I will do about the 5K. I wanted to use my race this weekend but the run ended being sooooo short... only 2.7 miles. I do not plan to do a 5K TT -- I could probably chug out an 8:15 pace during a training run (but when I did a 5K early in training I had a 7:23 pace so hate to lose more than 30 seconds... arrrrgh!). But the timing is what it is so I'll do my best but also not muck up my REAL tri!!

I am a total bike dork, so I am not sure if what you have up top covers this, but I want to know how to quickly get my gearing back in perfect shape.  There are times when I go to shift and it won't shift right away or I have to hit the shifter again and then it skips two gears.  I know there are those little knobs you turn, but I don't know how much or which way.  I would also be interested in anything related to adjusting cleat tension.

And lastly other than looks does it matter if I keep in my trainer skewer when I ride outside?

I told you I was a total bike dork.

Suzy:

This video is pretty good regarding adjusting your gears.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkzvfCaIbyQ

It covers the set screws and the gearing. Your problem with the gearing not tracking is probably due to improper cable tension. If you do not have a barrel adjustor I can explain how to adjust the cable tension with a pliers and a wrench.

Bike questions - I'm working on converting my bike into more aggressive ride. I'm considering buying aerobars.

However - Since my body will be shifted forward, I'm concerned that my saddle will not be comfortable (it's getting to the point where I'm starting to feel uncomfortable - mainly due to the weight loss, but I'm going to wait a while before seriously considering replacing it...it was expensive).   What do you call "them", where you attach a "thing" on your seat post and your saddle to bring it more forward. I can't bring my saddle forward anymore because it has reached the max.

Secondly - do you think it's worth buying a carbon handlebars? Specifically this one: FSA K-Force Carbon Fiber Road Handlebars 40 cm 31.8mm diameter?  Someone I know is selling this for $80, and I'm not sure if it's really that all valuable to me.  A cyclist I know has really nice carbon handlebars, but because it's made for road riding, the aerobars won't fit on it (it's flat on top for more hand comfort).

Lastly - what's with all the different type of clip-on aerobars?! Any recommendations for someone with short arms?

Thanks!

If you can, I would take the bike to a shop and have them fit you, they could put you on the bike and determine if your seat can move forward and get you in the right position or if you need a fast forward seatpost to get you there.  They could also try out a few different aerobar types to see which ones are the right length and possibly cut them down if needed.  Really not much difference between them various styles will be a personal preference.

As far as seats I would look at one of the Cobb versions, they seem to be very popular with both men and women.  I personally ride an Adamo Race saddle which works for me.

As far as carbon drops I would save your money, especially if you are thinking about clipon aerobars.  The carbon is going to save you weight which is not something you have to be overly concerned with in tri's.  Also good chance that the clipons could crush the bars when installed and tightened.

I would like to make a suggestion to the VT.  Either a person does all three disciplines or they do not get figured into the average...period.  No different from a regular triathlon.  Do the SBR get a time, do the SB, DNF. Agree?

Thanks Andy - I may jump on this bandwagon.

And why is it all the skinny people have ponied up their weight and this discussion was started by a dude who is already at his race weight!
