Ok, thanks Doug.  I just got a complete tune up done on my bike.  I was told that the chain I had was in ok shape (not stretched too much) but that it was too short after adding the larger chainrings.

The cassette was fine. But on that note, I just bought a new wheel on eBay for riding my trainer.  I figured that it would be easier to have a complete second wheel/tire/cassette and just swap them out rather than switch tires or wear down my good tires.  I found a saweet deal on eBay for a cheap wheel, Shimano hub, Continental tire and Ultegra 12/25 cassette (same cassette as I already have) for $60 after shipping.  SAWEEEET!  Poor sucker who sold it...  My wrench told me that the wheel was good and didn't even need to be true'd.  Nice.

Anyway - I need to get that new chain soon, blue would be cool.  Any word on whether I need a Shimano chain?  Is the spacing different for some chains vs others?  Granted I want a blue chain, but the KHS chains that I saw from Andy's LMGTFY were $8 for BMX's.

Warning: I am a data geek that would like to weigh in on the Garmin 305.  I bought the new 310 model that you are "supposed" to be able to use in the water.  Well, in my experience it only works if it is tucked under your swim cap.  Everytime you go to take a stroke you have the potential to lose tracking capability.  I saw this happen to several of my OWS friends this summer as well.  Personally, I like the feel of the 305 better and if you use Training Peaks it is an automatic upload.  It's cheaper and it works well.

I have an Garmin Edge 305 for biking now and like it, but plan to get a Powertap (for some bike--see earlier rant) so will probably switch to the Edge 705 if I feel I need it.

You can spend a ton on tracking devices so really think about how you plan to use it before investing. Otherwise, it sits in the drawer (take it from someone who is a slow learner).

I honestly cannot keep up with which chains are compatable with which rings. Obviously parts from the same company should work together fine. There are differences in link dimensions between brands. Your LBS shoudl be able to tell you which brands are compatible with Shimano.

Any issues with using in the water? (aside from no data)  I have one on the way and really got it because it was a waterproof Garmin.  I do all my swim training in a pool so don't need the GPS there..I just wanted to be able to wear it on the swim portion of a race and not have to worry about switching it from my bike to wrist in transition.

Garmin Forerunner 305 or Triathlon Watch or Both? Why?

I love my 305...never leave home without it.  Why - it gets me all the info I need.

But check with Tracy - she is the watch expert...check out her White Lake album (first pic)

I have a 305 and like it.  The whole double watch joke is I wear an Ironman Timex watch 24/7 and then put the Garmin on for the run.  That way I have my whole race time with my regular (waterproof) watch and get my bike and run data from the Garmin.   Some day I'll start wearing one watch per wrist, but then I would loose my cool unique look.

Geez, it's been a while since I looked at that photo.  I LOOK AWFUL!!!! Who said doing a half was fun?!?!

Suzy;

I agree with DougRob about your bike.  I would be VERY careful considering the late timing of this "design flaw".

And if you do decide to stay with them I would demand some sweet upgrades for your time and inconvenience.

No issues with the water with it. Like Suz and I both said no GPS capability. i also like the sizing of it. Fits nicer that the bulkiness of the 305. Suz, that thing must be monsterous on your wrists!!

You do NOT look awful!! Gorgeous!!

Love the double watches!! I do that on long runs when I plan walk breaks -- cuz I don't know how to make the Garmin beep every 10 minutes or whatever. There is probably a way but I love my handy-dandy Timex watch too!

And that is a great idea to wear the Timex during the swim so you have your full total time. I'm so doing that for my IM in June!

Speaking of which... How long will a fully-charged Garmin go? Will it last for an IM? Do you turn it on before the race so it can find the satellite, then wear it for the run and bike? Or turn it on during T1 to conserve batteries?

The 310 lasts up to 20 hrs. I believe the 305 lasts up to 10 hrs.

Lately i've had a few issues with my 310.  Once it said I ran over 10 miles when I ran around 6 and this past Monday it said my HR was 240.  I pretty sure it wasn't 240 or I probably won't be writing this email..

Uh oh. I have a 305 and don't plan to finish in 10 hours (even if you subtract out the swim and T1). Hmmmm... Maybe I'll synch up my HR strap with my hubby's Garmin and switch out mine with his after the bike. That would make the IM a 3-watch race. Crazy!!

So I'm about half way through the book Racing Weight by Matt Fitzgerald.  What a great book!  One of my hobbies is nutrition and this one definitely has great and sound information in it.  FWIW, I highly recommend it.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-16 3:13 PM CAN I RANT FOR A SECOND?  This is the note I got from my contact at GURU regarding the delivery of my bike which was supposed to be this week:

Good afternoon ladies… I have some sad news to report as there is a production hold on all Magis frames at the moment. We are working to correct a kink we discovered in the testing of an upgrade/modification we have made to the seat tube design where we have replaceable hanger. Because of the new shape we can’t get it to fit/interact properly with the BB, so we are re-designing the BB and that won’t be ready before the New Year. Sorry, but we just got the news from production in the past 24 hours as we just finished the tests and I haven’t been able to email you on this until now.

So rather than send a sub-par frame out to you, we’re holding off on the production until we know it will pass our testing procedures.

My apologies ladies… this was an unexpected situation otherwise it would have left already.

I’ll be able to provide you with an update when I get back in the New Year as we’ll be doing the next round of tests within the next few weeks (the holidays mean we lose a number of days.)

Once again, apologies, but we are not willing to compromise on the quality of your bicycle.

Sad news to report?  I am so irked.  I had to email them before they even contacted me and supposedly they just found out? Give me a frickin' break.  My note back gave them until January 7th for an update.  If not, my expectation is a full refund.  If I don't get it,  the BT, ST and every bike forum will hear about it.  Ok, I'm done.

Suzy,  P4!  forget stand over height.  When are you really standing over it anyways!

Sorry about the bad news..

I am also a 2 watch Timex/Garmin 305 guy.  What I did for my HIM was turn the Garmin on before the race and let it acquire the satellites then turned it off and left it in transition.  When I got to T1 the first thing I did was turn it on and it was ready to go well before I was.

Really love my 305 and from what I have heard I wouldn't trade even for a 310.  When they are able to get an accurate reading for the swim then I will think about upgrading because that would be very nice to have.

I like the 310XT though I think it is still overpriced. At $250 or so it would be worth the upgrade for the battery life, better screen and waterproofness over the 305 (though like others say it doesn't work correctly while swimming on the wrist). I'm a total tech geek and have FR60, 305, 310XT, 705 Edge and 500 Edge on the way. I also am awaiting the Swimovate Pool-Mate Swimming Computer for auto lap counting.

At my last tri I couldn't find my 310XT at T1 (because I hadn't tested it getting out of a full wetsuit and didn't wear it in the water) and wasted 3 minutes looking for it.

Are we having a team chat tonight? If so, what time?

I also just got the Matt Fitzgerald Nutrition book, just skimmed it so far, I am also looking at Paleo and Abs to get better tuned into nutrition.

WOW!!!  This thread moves FAST!  I miss one day, and we hit 20 pages....how am I supposed to keep up with your guys?  If this is any indication of how fast you all are in a race, I'm gonaa get left far, far behind

BTW  I am very grateful for the responses on gearing.  It gives me alot to think about, and may explain why my run times were so aweful in my races.

On another note, my planned 2010 races are:

May 31Foothills Sprint-Maryville TN
June 20Knoxville Volunteer Olympic-Knoxville TN
July 25Music City Olympic-Nashville TN

There may be one more in Aug/Sep, but it depends on whether I have to move again.

Hey everyone.  I'm back!  I've spent the past three weeks studying for an advance PGA Certification and just finished it with by passing a couple tests today!  I am now a PGA Certified Professional.  There are only 2% of the PGA professionals in the world that have my credetials now.

Hope everyone is doing well.  I just wanted to check in and let everyone know I am still alive.  I'll check things out and get back into the swing of things over the next couple of days.  Hope everyone is well!  I'll post my bio when I get a few seconds!

IF I decide to do my first HIM next year, should I skip my planned tri that is 3 weeks before hand?  I really want to do it (can choose either sprint or oly) but I don't know how that would fit in with training.  Any thoughts?
