Just curious as to how they went. Salty I believe that you are heading to Boston today so I just wanted to say good luck and kick some butt!!!
The new shoes were the best bit of me. If only i had been reading the Manatee thread earlier, i could have got me some shiney luminous ones and whacked the one hour barrier. |

Guys name all kinds of things....cars, motorcycles, boats, tools. I bet it was men who began naming inanimate objects in the first place. :D4agoodlife - 2013-04-07 6:02 AM I took Silver out for a ride today...clipped in and everything! 16 miles in a little under an hour and NO MAJOR SCARINESS I practiced shifting a lot and not losing speed around corners. Of course, unclipping before stops. Getting started at lights was a pain at first because I forgot to shift down before stopping...DUH!!! Heart rate shot through the roof a few times, until I stopped worrying about getting my foot out "in time". My last stop I had a little trouble because I got too cocky. I shifted twice before stopping but didn't pedal through...oooops! Left foot shot out of clip when I only got grinding chain upon take off. I'm sure it was a good show for the cars around the major intersection where I was flailing away. Overall a great confidence-boosting first ride. Yes! Silver. Nice. I hope i can find a cool name for my bike when i get one, yet it seems a bit, well, girly. I guess i will have to secretly whisper it's name.
DE...double entendre Of course... And I thought well paired. |

Siver Streaker isn't a girly name, but I just might get some odd looks if i announced i was going to give Trevor a hard ride. |

Wasn't online much last week - mom was visiting - but I did manage to get some running in. It's going to be 78 tonight! Planning to run after work. May be running with the jogging stroller, but that will just make me stronger. Hope everyone is doing well! Not sure I'm going to go back and read the whole thread. It's my first day back at work and I'm trying to catch up. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Mad Mutant Manatee Mentors 4--CLOSED I'm straggling in here just like at the end of my half yesterday! I'm back in the old thread talking to myself like a crazy person, unless Allen is still checking in there. Thought it was odd that only a couple pages had happened since I last checked in...then realized I didn't get any email updates...thanks for finding me, Erin! Here's what I posted on the old thread: Well, I survived the half. It was really a training run (not for any other race in particular, but when you run 3 long runs before hand and pretty much nothing during the week, you just go ahead and call this a "training run." Training my mind to keep going when legs say stop?) and given my lack of preparation plus the very hilly terrain, I was aiming to just keep running the whole time and not hurt myself. It ended up finishing on 5 minutes slower than my best time (although, admittedly, I have never "raced" a half because I'm afraid of using up all my energy before the end of the race - need to work on that) and I'm not too worse for wear today. My knees hurt from the downhills and my quads are a little sore, but not as bad I feared. At the finish yesterday I could barely walk! My legs honestly felt like they had done a full marathon, not just half way. I'll work on getting the race report in, but that's the long and short of it. Oh, and my post-race firecracker wings and cajun fries were AMAZING!!! They taste better when you've earned them. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Mad Mutant Manatee Mentors 4--CLOSED So, if you read my race report you know I could not keep my heart rate down on the run. Figured it was from out biking my bike fitness ( and probably being fatigued from my horrible swim), then I ran across this post in ST Re: Imploding on the run--help [31CapeHorn] - NEW [In reply to] Quote | ReplyExpectations - within 10% of your open half marathon time is a good split at half iron. Fatigue mode, HR too high for a given effort or spiking whenever you run is a dehydration / heat issue. For early season half and full iron races it is difficult to get in the heat training to do well. You need to do these crazy overdressed rides and runs and trainer stuff to get the heat exposre. Calories, LOW hr for a given effort is an indicator of not enough calories. Maybe that is what happened at the Augusta race. A rule of thumb is 1.75 calories per pound of body weight per hour on the ride and 1.25 on the run. The poster is a doctor, I believe. Anyway, based upon this post, my issue was I was in fatigue mode and dehydrated. I usually finish sprints well under 2 hours and, as such, give little thought to hydration; but this was in between a sprint and oly and took over 2 hours; so I guess I paid for my haphazard hydration plan. I did drink on the bike, but had at least 1/2 a bottle left . Also, like many places, we had a weird winter and yesterday was the hottest weather I worked out in for some time, so I should have accounted for that too. Can't say I've ever noticed having too low a heart rate, so I guess my nutrition plans are ok. Anyway, I found the information interesting and thought I'd share in case anyone else has those kinds of issues. Food for thought - at least for me |
