Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Originally posted by cdban66 I was thinking about the "core discussion" on my way into work this afternoon. My personal shortcoming is flexibility. I find that when I do a good leg stretch every day for a week or so, I see benefit. It kind of falls in line with Ben's and Yanti's statements of "What are you going to gain?" and "What do you need to do?" I also try to incorporate some core, yoga, or pilates movements as well. I find I am better off if I take about 10-15 minutes at the end of the day and do a stretching/core routine. I'm not sure that this will help everybody or anybody for that matter, but I do find that it helps me. ANd sometimes that's the best we can go on. Try something for a few weeks in a row and see what happens. Ugh, flexibility/mobility. My nemesis. I find that, with all things fitness related, I seem to do lots of the things I like, and avoid the things I don't. Therefore, flexibility has not been something I've made a priority. Here and now, I'm saying that I will pay more attention to stretching and mobility work for the next three weeks. Let's see how that feels come February! |

Sufferfest is just the set of videos. Their effort is based on RPE although this can very well be translated over to power. Those of us with a dumb trainer have to pay attention and pedal harder as the onscreen RPE goes up. Smart trainer owners (Kickr, Computrainer, etc) may have the option of programing the workout into a file ahead of time. By doing this and synching with the video, the amount of resistance will change with what you see on screen. So sounds something like you see with Zwift, but you have to make the effort to get the programing in yourself. Sufferfest doesn't do that, not as far as I know. Some of the others here with smart trainers could offer better advice on programming or obtaining this. |

Hmm all this flexibility and core talk.....I remember some folks giving me a hard time that I went to gymnastics....that's why...I get flexibility and core out of the way once or twice a week in a fun way. On a different note I need to thank the Manatee Strava group for keeping me motivated to do my workouts. I think if it wasn't for the group I would have skipped twice already |

In the last 2 years I have aggravated this injured area a number of times, mainly when lifting my 80+kg (180lb) dogs. The latest aggravation happen just after Christmas when I was out walking a couple of my dogs and fell and landed face first on the road. I ended up landing predominately on my left had side and I am still sporting some of the bruises. I'm sure it looked pretty impressive as i did a delightful 180 spin as I fell. I see a Bowen therapist and she does a great job, I can now stand up straight, she fixed my shoulder that took a fair bit of the fall and I am relatively pain free, just very stiff. I don't drink coffee (I know but they still let me be a Manatee), but I do drink a bit of English Breakfast tea and partake of a fair bit of chocolate. May I ask why you don't drink coffee anymore? Is it related to your recovery, or you just don't like it as much as you used to? o.O I personally prefer green tea (some kind of Oolong), but I drink a cup of Latte now and then. Originally posted by tomsimper what are the best core and strength exercises that I should be doing? In my humble opinion focusing your strength exercises on only just one muscle group is counter-productive. Abs muscles are usually strong enough for all of us, if you want muscle definition (6 pack abs) loosing body fat and dehydrate yourself to the point that your skin will let your abs show is the best way. On the other hand (I only have two hands ) having strong back muscles (lower and upper) is in my opinion a really good investment, it helps with posture, which helps with running and cycling and your overall well being. Dumbbell rows: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GZGeziARdPQ/VJySk52p6EI/AAAAAAAAAHY/Im7DD... Dumbbell shoulder press: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ABz1h2Qw_3k/VJvqmq4kL-I/AAAAAAAAAHI/eXP1g... and bent over rows: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rp4BYFMLfT4/VJvoFzLLLoI/AAAAAAAAAG0/YPHQm... are a couple of my favourite exercises and they help you with core stability as well, especially if you use dumbbells instead of a barbell, your secondary stabilizer muscles need to help out which is really what you were looking for. The same muscle groups can be targeted with calisthenics (no weight), yoga/pilates etc. In my opinion weights are the easiest method of all of them, because you can adjust the resistance (the weight of the ... ööhhmm weights) and train yourself up. Yoga and calisthenics depend on body weight, which means: a few exercises are to hard for some, while they are laughably easy for others. Adding in some shoulder, biceps/triceps, deltoid, glute and calve exercises will all help on the long term. I am no professional, these are only my two cents. Originally posted by johnthecat Originally posted by DaveL Regarding the bike - everyone loves a nice new shiny bike and a new aero or lightweight one can be faster but assuming that trek 1000 is in decent shape your best "bang for your buck" will be to just ride it a lot. I actually just picked up a used Scott Addict R3 with Hed Jet 6 Clinchers from a coworker for a steal right before Christmas. Definitely a lot prettier than my Trek, hopefully it will motivate me to ride more. That is a beautiful bike. I have a Trek 1.1 alpha, and I love it, but yours looks awesome. I've bought a Garmin (it should arrive on Saturday) because of all of YOU! I was doing my run today and I had a blast, I was enjoying myself as almost never before and I tried to beat my PR time (I couldn't, it was dark, it was raining and the road was muddy, at least these are my excuses), but I have a determination as never before. I will start my swim Masters training next week, I am a little bit nervous about it (I am not really scared... ,but almost). I looking forward for my races this year (to be honest I would love to run a half-Marathon this week just for the fun of it). So overall I am really happy that I joined this group, I might be a little bit overwhelmed with all of the features of BT (inspires and all that stuff), but I should learn my way around soon enough. And I need to get my hands on some poptards someday, they look really unhealthy. I apologies for my grammar mistakes, but it is midnight here and I've just finished my run for today. Some of the others here with smart trainers could offer better advice on programming or obtaining this. Ben is correct ref using the sufferfest videos on pre. You control the effort based on the instructions on the screen. You can do this with the kickr in (I think)) resistance mode, where you control the resistance using the gears, much like a dumb trainer. Where the kickr and sufferfest videos really work together well is when they are run through a third party software program like trainer road or cycleops vt. The kickr is controlled by the software. When a hsrd effort is shown on the video, it will increase the resistance on the kickr to a set wattage. Its not quite like what happens on zwift, where if you slow down your Watts drop, , on this your watts stay the same. I've done the tour on both a dumb trainer and smart trainer. Both are hard but the kickr is brutal, there's no escaping the work they want you to do. If someone hasn't already taken up Dave/David's (sorry, too many names to remember) offer of a free month of trainer road , give it a try. If they have, give it a try anyway. I think it only costs 10 bucks for a month month and you can cancel at any time with a money back guarantee. |

I also used to swim with a small masters program, when the program changed pools, most of my swim buddies did not make the move. That made getting to the pool a lot harder! I would love to have a run buddy. None of my friends is interested in any exercises (except drinking beer), and my only running friend is an introvert and I feel very happy if she just reply to my text message ;p Sorry Jen, I hope you'll find a partner really soon. The season is just starting! |
