Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh My...Suzy, if your built like me they could put both of us together and still not quite make her. LOL Life seems to have given me a hiccup yesterday and today and I'm walking around wondering why I add so much to my plate. I'm only doing sprints and it still seems to stretch me. Yesterday was rough around here due to my "high maintenance" Exhibit. Exh A woke thinking life was great. Dad was making breakfast of pancakes, bacon and fresh strawberries. Life doesn't get any better than that....then....EXH B woke up and it was downhill from there for everyone. Spent the evening with him helping Exh A practice baseball, making dinner together and timing him on a practice 800 for track. Enjoyed time with just him which doesn't happen nearly enough when Exh B demands so much energy. Escape is why I did an ironman. Wouldn't have been able to tell you that before I did it but it's certainly loud and clear now. I'll get a swim in tomorrow and I'd really like to go to yoga too but again time will tell based on homework loads. Soooo, I'm telling you all this stuff because I need a boost. It is way to easy training for a sprint to skip stuff and say it's no big deal. So my question is WHEN are we starting the virtual tri? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well got in and got an appointment with the ortho surgeon today around noon. She came in and said that she was less concerned with the broken wrist bone and more worried about the scaphoid fracture. I got to see my films and I clearly saw a bigger issue than the ER made of this fracture. ![]() The picture above shows what I am going to have done. I got lucky and got in tomorrow. Since I work IT she said she was not concerned about my line of work for healing, but since I mentioned triathlons she said this is my best bet to recover fullest and in the least time. If I would have casted it she said 8 weeks at best more along the lines of 12 weeks. The scaphoid is in a very fluid part of the wrist and my fracture is closer to the wrist so healing time is harder as it is further from the blood supply. I could have ended up 8-12 weeks out needing to have surgery to fix this issue altho my wrist would be healed. I opted to go with the screw and she said I would be in a cast for 4 weeks or maybe 8 at worst. Also she said I would be good to run, biking concerned her because of the pressure but the screw will make it much better to heal. Finally she said she can do a waterproof cast so I can swim!!!! Surgery at 3 tomorrow and I will be home at night. The biggest part of the surgery is how she has to torque my wrist to get the right angle for the screw. It could be that during that process she makes the wrist fracture abit worse. if that happens she will put a T plate in which will make my recovery time much faster. Hopefully all goes well, and by the sounds of it I will get to be back to tris by May 1 my first race. They gave me some pain meds as it has been quite painful and hard to sleep. Thanks for the well wishes and I will keep you updated. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ta Da! Paco my fabulous bike builder and me... The bike is nearly done, but home to stay....we need to change out the derailleur (the Dura Ace doesn't work perfectly with the SRAM shifters), trim the length of the aerobars even more for my stupid small hands, change out my pedals to the white ones and install the power tap. What do you think? ![]() |

Don't know what the hell Lionel (instructor) was mad about today, but that sucked. 2 of the sets were 300 yd continuous. The rest were 100's. Did I mention that it SUCKED. 1200 yards of fist drill??? Yeah, it sounds like Lionel has issues! |

It is way to easy training for a sprint to skip stuff and say it's no big deal. So my question is WHEN are we starting the virtual tri? Boost...boost...boost. You overschedule because you are a type "A" personality. Lots of us here are in the same situation. Personally I have found that I can only do Oly's because of family and kid time commitments, a 50 hour a week job, and three apartment buildings that I run, etc. When I get in the endurance "funk" as I call it, I try to remember that the kids are only going to be around for a couple of more years, the job is only a job, the apartments aren't going anywhere and I will have the time to train for as many full iron distances that I want in a couple of years. Enjoy your family time while you got it, enjoy your training while you got it, remember that daily life has to be approached a lot like training....sometimes you gotta enjoy the "training" as much or more than the race. Triathlon is a life style choice, and a healthy one at that. Dino |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Trina -- Veruca <sp?> Salt is the name you seek. We drop her name plenty around our house. On the run front, I did my first track workout ever about 3 years ago. I had been running for years, but always nice and slow and comfy. I'm sure that was good for me in the long run (no pun intended!), so yeah, work on that endurance. Build it slowly (i.e. run it slowly and add the miles slowly). Congratulations on the race, again, and I'm off to check out the photos... MG -- thanks for some great laughs. Really, the photos and comments were awesome. Kelly -- please tell me HONESTLY... were you sore after baseball? Cuz I played catch with my son on Saturday and felt it pretty good on Sunday (glutes and arm/shoulder). Felt like a huge wuss-bag-loser-mom (not to mention he ditched me for Dad on Sunday cuz I don't throw far/hard enough). Anyway, chin up, girlfriend!!! Oh, and I never realized you did CDA. Anxious to get some dirt on that one! I definitely use training as therapy/escape. Since I don't work for money (but contrary to what John may think, I work my @$$ off for no money!!), training is one of my things that keeps me from becoming 100% wrapped up in my kid's lives and staking my identity (& successes and failures) on them. So yeah, I totally get that. Oh, and stop skipping workouts!! ![]() Suzy -- congrats on the green light and the red bike. It's so gorgeous! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today is going to be close to 80!!! Unbelieveable. Thanks for the push. Sorry for all that. When we have a really bad day it takes time to get it out of my system. Back on track today. Woke up and got my swim in. Will do yoga tonight and hopefully a short spin too. John- No need to run on Sat before your race sounds like you will be busy with intervals at the finish line handing out beers. I expect to see you with mine too. Kayla- Baseball. I've added catcher drills to my workouts and OMG that hurts! It's a contest between me and the youngest. The boys would pick daddy over me too but he was gone so I was better than nothing. We worked mostly on grounders and pop-flys so I didn't have to throw too much. When I take them to the cages we use a pitching machine so they don't have to deal with me.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello mg! Thought I would give an update. It is 12 days until my first marathon and I am a little bit nervous. I ran 14+ miles on sunday over very hilly terrain. I am still hurting today. Hammies, and quads. I got on the elevator here at work yesterday and looking at my reflection thought someone had punched me in the eye. It looked black and puffy. I have also been feeling lethargic. Then last night my wife, and avid (make that fanatical) tennis player tells me she is feeling the same way. I teammate of hers husband is a doctor and turns out our systems match the systems for adults with the NOrorvirus that is going around here. Both my kids had it (vomiting and diarehea for them). So today is supposed to be a run, but there is no way I can do it. I am going to switch a couple of days around in my schedule and do the run later in the week. My coach is fine with this and says the work is all in the bank now so just keep moving and don't hurt myself. Trina: Along with what everyone else said :Great job TRIATHLETE! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Doug: What are you doing post run to aid recovery? When I was marathon training, I would always do an ice bath after the effort for about 10 mins. I would throw in some Epsom Salts/Baking Soda to reduce inflammation further. Since I started tri training, a recovery drink is consumed in the first 10 minutes after finishing a long workout...mine is choc milk, but there are lots of options. I usually eat a decent meal after the bath too.....just throwing out some ideas to help. PS one other thought, is it possible you are doing these long runs at too hard of an intensity? Typically, my head was fried after my long runs, but the body was pretty in tact, especially after a good nights sleep. Edited by SSMinnow 2010-03-09 9:25 AM |

That seems to be the way things work Doug. LOL, 2 weeks before MCM I was doing one of my last long runs and tweaked my ankle. Had gone the whole time without any issues. Luckilly no issues come raceday. 12 days is plenty of time, this is all cooldown time anwyays, so focus on getting healthy and being ready to race. |
