Like Ann-Marie, I wasn't quite sure what you meant by this. I took it to mean that your work schedule varies from week to week. Sometimes you work 1-9, other times, you have different hours. Is that the case? If so, maybe we can get Dave and Dareen in here to share their strategies. I believe that both of them have "nonstandard" work schedules.

Steel Trap <--------------Janyne's mind

My schedule does not vary a ton, but I often have to switch when I train based on what I am having to do any given day.  Swim is alwasy in the AM; bike can vary depending on what I have going on at work and/or if I can get out of bed in the morning.  Run can happen before or after work, or at lunchtime.  I often won't decide until the night before when my workout(s) will get done based on how I am feeling....

Go Mel!

I have a 12k trail run on Sunday. It's the third in a series of 5 (we missed the second because of Disney). I am preparing to die on the hills and in the heat so if you don't hear from me after the weekend you know what happened.

Saturday morning "long run"--going for 80 minutes. Later on 3400m of swimming.

Sunday a 3:30 ride, probably on the trainer. Both weather and air quality have been crap lately. (The air is white and smells bad. Some kind of thermal inversion/smog situation. Plus it won't stop raining. Keep expecting the rain to clear the air, but it doesn't. just increases the humidity.)

He is very high functioning, but I need to find ways to help him in the areas he needs help. I also need to spend more time with both of my kids, which is challenging for me (and I feel guilty about it), as I work full time and study. But we are managing, and I am making sure we are a happy family I will definitely try to come as often as I can, especially on Fridays to cheer up all the racers And I promise to come more often as soon as things get easier. I wish everyone a wonderful weekend! Stay strong! Marysia

Mary, we have a boy (7 years old) in our lives now that has also been diagnosed on the Autism scale.  We are still working to understand it all. I pray that you are strong enough to reach out to others for help. There are a ton of resources available, finding them can be a challenge at times, but they are out there. The feelings that come when you see him succeed are unbelievable. And with you beside him, I am positive he will succeed.

Thank you for the heads up on all that is going on with you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Gonna be 37 here today - that's Celsius, so basically 100F

And yep metres so that first hill is around 850' of climbing over a touch over 2 miles - it's actually the descents that are concerning me the most. Any tips would be most welcome.

Also on the shoe front I'm thinking that I will wear my new trail shoes. I have only done about 5k in them. I didn't have any blisters or anything but the drop on them is less than the drop on my road shoes and I am a little concerned about the toll that might take on my calves. I would love your thoughts on that too.

I'll be doing a brisk 35 min. walk tomorrow. I'll probably take our younger dog to a large off-leash area. He can burn off some energy running 3 times as far as I walk and I can get some nature time. The neighborhood is nice but open space is better. I've been able to increase my walking by 5 min./week. PT says I can start easing into running when I can walk an hour. If all goes according to plan, I'll be running by March. No cycling for now, but hopefully soon. I'm starting to think about races!

Woo hoo! I've been doing the "return to run" stuff myself. I hope that it goes well for you!

x2 again!

My brother, cousin, and husband all are high-functioning autistic. I am sending good thoughts your way, because even though I have been around it all my life, I still feel like there is days that I know nothing and I accept that. I've noticed that for all of them, having routines makes it easier and it provides a source of comfort. Sometimes its being able to go to a grocery store or a church or getting out of the house without issues that make it all worth the while. If there is a hobby or interest present, giving all the support you can means a lot.
Lighting someone elses' candle will make your path brighter as well. #namaste

Mary I have no doubt that with you as his mum your son will continue to thrive despite this diagnosis. I'm with Chris please don't be shy about asking for help - even if it is popping in here and saying "I've had a really cr@p day and need some support."

I have noticed here in Australia more and more mainstream acceptance of people with autisium. To the point where one of the big grocery stores are starting to implement "quiet hours". During this time all background music is turned off, shelf packing and other staff activities are minimised and where possible the brightness of the lighting is reduced. I hope that you find lots of great support in your area.

Yay for improvement!!!

Let me know when/what we are registering for

(btw, since you are the wordsmith, I know that is a bad sentence but didn't have the brain power to adjust )

So far, I'm planning to do the Run as One 5K on 4/7. Thinking about the Barkin' Dog duathlon on 5/6 and a leg of the Colfax Marathon relay on 5/20. Nothing too wild...yet.

Holy height and heat, Stacey!! First you freeze yourself at Disney, then you cook yourself at home. You do know how to pick your races for maximum challenge!! As for descent ideas, you might consider lacing your shoes differently to prevent your foot from sliding forward and back. I'm not sure where to find that info; I'll bet somebody else here knows. (TJ?) Also, I've found that shortening my stride, widening my stance and bending my knees is helpful. It looks silly, kind of like I'm waddling, but it lowers my center of gravity and helps me feel less like I'm going to pitch head first down the hill. Good luck!

Take the time to take care of your family and yourself. The pod will be here for you whenever you have a chance to pop in. Hopefully having a diagnosis now will be helpful for all of you. My brother and husband are probably on the autistic spectrum, although neither has a formal diagnosis. A book I founds really helpful is "Autism From the Inside Out." It's by a guy who discovered that he is autistic after his son was diagnosed. My husband actually read it first, then asked me to read it so I could understand him better. It made some of his behaviors make so much more sense. Temple Grandin's books are good too.(((Hugs)))

Trainer ride then I get to bring my bike in for a 17,500km check up - new cables, bar tape, new tubeless gravel tires for my new wheels and just a good overall check up. This does leave me with a mountain bike to put on the trainer which kind of sucks due to the wider spaced gearing but I will make due. Might sneak in a run if my wife wants to run outside on Saturday or Sunday and likely some snowboarding on Sunday too.

Anime, Everyone's schedule is crazy you just have to figure it out. If it doesn't work you can't beat yourself up about the results you have from the training you didn't do. Remember this is for fun and you should want to do it. If you can't fit in the time now maybe adjusting your goals and build on success from achieving them. This may help you figure out what works best for your schedule.

My work week varies from week to week but mostly I work 50 to 80 hours a week, and lots of weekends. Sometimes I work from 7 am on one day to noon the next. I can't do a complete work out in the morning. I do most of my workouts at night except on the weekends. These are late because I start after the kids go to bed. If I have a long shift I may get up earlier and get a short bike or run in early in the morning. Sleep certainly gets sacrificed. If I miss a workout I try not to worry about it. I will skip a bike or swim first. I get kinda agitated when I haven't worked out and try not to miss much.

Last year I did my first 70.3 and first marathon. I ran on my marathon plan doing 4 runs most weeks. I swam once a week, and biked 1-2 times mostly on the trainer. My 70.3 was at the end of September and my marathon mid November. By the time i did my 70.3 I was running more than 16 miles on weekends and I think it helped a lot. If I was to do another one I would probably do the same run plan and target a marathon 6 to 8 weeks after. I can't remember the timing of your events. maybe harder to go the other way but I didn't bike to far until the month of my race so who knows.

Run and hike tomorrow, Cx ride on Sunday. Lots of slush and melting here, hopefully Umstead will not be a slog on Sunday!

Slush and melting should make for perfect CX conditions. :-D

Up here in the great Northeast, we're experiencing typical January weather. Snow, temps in the 30s or lower. I have generally been able to convince myself to run outside down into the lower 20s, but not this year. I've stuck to the treadmill and the trainer so far this year.

This weekend will be a 45-50 minute trainer ride today. Tomorrow will be a swim day and I'm hoping to be able to convince myself to also do a run in the afternoon since the forecast shows a high of 45!

4 mile run today + upper body strength & core. 2 hr bike ride tomorrow. Looking forward to getting back out on the road as temps should be ok for those of us without any cold weather gear.
