Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-03-17 6:15 AM If you're racing, raise your hand high and tell us the details....and please include your strategy. Now that we are getting into the season your thoughts could help others. My coach and I decided on the half marathon, so I am running on Sunday. I say "running," not "racing." This is a hilly course, and we came up with a plan to make it a good, solid, run. If I do that, I should PR this particular course (I've only raced it once 2-3 years ago -- need to go and double-check what I did time-wise). His thoughts were to do miles 1-4 at 9:15, then 5-9 at 9:00, then finish around 8:45. I told him I thought I could be more aggressive, so might shoot for about :15/mile faster overall. That said, I'm not really resting at all (bumping my rest day to Saturday but also have permission to do a short run if I so choose -- might not take an off day this week.) Trying to get a girlfriend to run it with me (we are about the same speed) but she has a sore throat this morning so she may bail. In any case, this is an aggressive training run and should be fun. Weather looks to be nice. Good luck to Doug. A marathon is such an awesome undertaking and you've put in the work!! And good luck to everyone else racing too! There are a few of us out there! Woot! |

Now that we are getting into the season your thoughts could help others. I'm "racing" this weekend. I use the "racing" term very lightly... Saturday I am pacing my best friend from high school in a 8k. Hope to keep her running the whole time and under an 11 min mile pace. She only took up running Dec of '08 when I told her I wanted to come to VA Bch and run a marathon in '09. I ran that marathon in '09 & she ran/walked the 1/2...not bad for a girl that was never athletic and had never run before Dec '08. Anyway, the 8k will be a total blast...hope our legs keep up with our mouths. Sunday I am running the marathon. I say that hestitantly since I really have no training to speak of, but am totally in it for fun. Pretty sick idea of fun, but I've done sillier things in my life. Saw the dr this am. He gave me clearance to run this weekend. Said the feet are probably not a result of my running, but did kind of get on to me for waiting until now to see him. But I reminded him today is Wed, I could have waited until Friday on my way out of town to see him ![]() Hope everyone has the best St Patrick's Day ever! Where did I miss the posts that you were hurt too? What happened? Good googly moogly folks. NO ONE ELSE IS ALLOWED TO GET HURT - THE GREAT OZ HAS SPOKEN!!! Take extra care this weekend Linda. We still have another bike ride date to keep. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go Janet and William!!! Linda, I think you are certifiably nuts, but I LOVE IT. As Kim said, please be careful! No race is worth long-term injury. You are impressive! Most of all, have fun pacing on the 8K. Chatty runs with girlfriends are simply the best. |

If the weather is as predicted, I hope very much to be putting my skirt ON for this race. Current forecast is for a high of 60, which is skirt weather by me. Need to see how cold it is the night before, however, as the high temps won't hit until hours after the race. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone for the well wishes and inspires! I am a little nervous but in a good way. It looks like the rain is going to hold off until the evening (thank God!) Do not expect anything like Chet stupendous 3:10! I do not even want to guess at a time. It will be what it will be. I am REALLY looking forward to more balance tri-training. Good luck to everyone else running or rqacing this weekend. I have jury duty on Monday. That is going to be comfortable...NOT! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-03-17 3:38 PM Devils advocate....why shoot for a negative split if the last half of the course is the most challenging? This is just my opinion, but when I have done halfs and fulls, the course plays into my decision on how I will run it....I knew full well for Boston the back half would be slower because there are 5 miles of hills starting at the 19m mark and tried to pace myself appropriately in the upfront knowing full well I would slow down towards the end....just food for thought! Tobey91 - 2010-03-17 9:58 AM So I talked it over with my wife last night and I am going to do the National Half Marathon this weekend, assuming I can still enter. The online entry is closed, but they said they are reserving about 1000 spots for people who have not yet registered who show up the the expo to register (and pay an extra $15). So I am hoping to get one of those spots. Strategy is not to go out too hard, and keep my own pacing such that I can negative split. Doing a negative split will be difficult because the second half of the course is quite hilly. But That is my thinking. My goal for the negative split has much more to do with my pacing for the first half than for the second half. I usually go out way too hot/fast and my second half is really not pretty. [Note that, to an outside observer, none of my running is pretty.] I am trying to do a much better job of keeping myself in check so I have capacity to burn later in the race. Considering that I have more races like this scheduled, I am using this as a chance to manage myself in anticipation of future events . I believe that setting the goal of negative splitting, even if ultimately not successful, will keep me focused on that. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() /vent rant whatever its called... Cut my swim short at lunch. Had me and another guy in the lane for the first half. We swam well together. Not in each others way. All good. Then a brest-stroker jumps in...AHHHH. Ok fine. I'll just adjust the times I leave so I'm not running into his back. Then 2 more people jump in. They should NOT have been in the medium lane. Their first lengths were backstroke, and not a fastbackstroke....I did 2 more lengths and called it quits. very frustrating. 5 people in the lane!! and 3 of them super duper slow. |

I was about to feel sorry for you that you had a tough time in the pool but with that Yankee comment, I guess I will have to assume that you deserved it! I am actually pretty fortunate when it comes to pools. Very rarely do I have to share a lane and it is never more than 2 in a lane. I have never had to swim in circles (if that is what you call it), I always just have to split the lane. The YMCA, is really light in terms of people in the pool. When I swim at the high school pool they don't put any lane lines out so it can get a little tight but never anything like you mention above. |

I rarely have to share, normally people just wait on the side for a lane to open up. Then again I often have some larger people who walk or take up the whole lane that do not make well for sharing. Then again, I wont have any issues at the pool for the next few weeks, still away on doctors orders! ![]() |

Remember, I think we're alone now...... That is the perfect song for half way through a long run where you desperately need a distraction and something light and fun to sing along with. Then I follow that with some Metallica's Enter Sandman for your new found kick a** mood. But of course the list starts with some Eye of the Tiger! Gggggggrrrrrrrrrrr Good stuff!!! |
