We named Nola, well, Nola. I guess that's pretty unusual, but we don't get any negative reactions. People seem to like it.

It's an acronym for the two places where she was conceived-- first in concept...where we finally succumed to the inevitability of having a child after many years of marriage, and then where she was literally conceived. We decided to have her when we were living in Los Angeles, and then (finally) conceived her on vacation in New Orleans . Ironically, after dinner at Emeril Lagasse's restaurant of the same name, but she's *not* named after that .

NO+LA = Nola.

That's going to gross her out one day.

My middle name is Cullen, which is somewhat unusual. Apparently my dad was watching a monday night football game and the Patriots had a player named Cullen Bryant. He wanted to name me Cullen, but my mom wanted something more biblical, so... Matthew Cullen.

My daughter's name is Alexa...she gets called, Alexis and Alexia all the time, drives my wife nuts. For some reason everybody calls her Lulu though, not sure where it started but it's stuck with her for 2.5 years.

Thank goodness my dad named me.  At first I was going to be Sarah, but then he settled on Elaine.  My mom wanted to name me either Maureen or Teeweewas.

My husband is Zachariah Abraham.  He goes by "Zac" but people always think it's Zack, Zachary, etc.

I'm not having kids, but for a boy I like Octavian and for a girl Evangeline.

Several things came to mind reading this thread:

1. When my brother and his wife were expecting their first, she liked the name "Kyle," but he wanted something unique, so the agreed to alter the spelling to Kiel, with the same pronunciation. My nephew has gone through life telling people his name is not "Keel." They live several hours from us, but one day I was volunteering in the soccer office, filing registrations to their proper teams and came upon a boy with the same name and spelling--even our last name!

2. John and Janet Elway named all their kids with "J" names.

3. My daughter is named Jordan. It was one of the very few names both my wife and I liked. We wanted a name that could go on a business card and give no real gender clue. We thought it was sort of unique, but she has been on at least 4 sports teams with other Jordans. One of her coaches finally just started calling her "AJ," which stands for "Another Jordan." My daughter says is stands for "Awesome Jordan."

4. A friend from HS used to work with a lady named Sunny, who had a daughter named Windy (not Wendy).

My older daughter's name is Jenna, so not much comment there, but my younger daughter's name is Brina (prounounced bree-nah; like Sabrina, except without the "Sa" part). Poor kid. No one ever gets it right. She gets called Brianna almost every day, or Brenna, or Brynna. There's certainly nothing wrong with those names, but they're not her name, and often people just aren't paying close enough attention to get it right.

Of course, I just blame my ex since he named both girls. I do like both girls' names, but if I had had my way, we'd have Tara and Renee.

My oldest sister's name is Noel. Yes like Christmas. Her house is filled with Christmas decorations with her name on it.

My older brother's name is Nathan. He has the most normal name of all of us.

My other older sister's name is Grace. She always hated the song "Amazing Grace" when she was younger but she was really named after the song "Grace that is greater than all our sins."

Then there is my name, Harmony. Everyone thinks that my parents were hippies. Not true. My mom just needed some harmony in the home after having 4 kids. Plus, it is a pretty name.

My younger brother's name is Asher. One of the 12 tribes of Israel. When I tell people his name they always ask me if I am Jewish. Nope. My mom just likes Bible names. I think Asher is a really cool name. I hope he names his first son Asher.

Yeah, well, that's what parents are for I guess. Anyway, we mad a conscious decision to put slightly more thought in it than did our parent. Jim? My dad was Jim. Amy? Amy's Aunt was Amy.  Buh-or-uh-ing!

It is. We made it 8 years very happily kidless before we changed our minds.

Best decision, by far, we ever made though.

My parents somehow like the name Denise, so I am Denise.

In the late 70s/early 80s back in Hong Kong, Denise is a very uncommon name.  No one could pronounce my name right.  I kept being called "Dennis".

Wonder if Denise2003 had the same problem.

I LOVE my name, Lisa. My parents had lots of criteria when picking names for me and my sister. They had to be 2 syllables, end in a vowel (because last name starts with a hard "c") and absolutely could NOT have a nickname attached to it (jenny, becky, etc.). They ended up with Lisa and Brenda.

My sister got a lot of flack for naming her 2nd kid Henry, but they love the name.

My daughter's name is Riana. It is a feminine form of Ryan which is my maiden name. Everybody always wants to call her Brianna. I think she likes it though. I asked her the other day why she wasn't putting her last name on her school papers (2nd grade) and she looked at me like I was crazy and said, "There's only one Riana in the whole school."

One of her classmates is named Stormi and her mom's name is Sunny.

And, I have a friend who's stepdaughter is named Scottie - not a nickname, not short for anything, just because.

My wife is hispanic and I am of Irish descent so naturally my son's name is Quinlan which is Gaelic meaning fit, shapely, strong (like his dad). My daughter's name is Solana - Spanish meaning sunlight or sunshine. We love the names, but have had some different looks or questions when people hear their names. We have heard of one other Quinlan first name, but no Solana as of yet.

No disrespect to the grandmothers, but I'd say you got a great name.  You could have be Edverta or something.

My kids:  Bennie and Sophie.  Just cause it's easy to yell.

BUT, in Sophie's prek class there was a Truman, a Kennedy, and a Lincoln.  Now that's cool.

Heard of a story from a delivery room nurse - happened some 20 years ago.  A hispanic woman went into labour a month earlier than due date and gave birth to a boy.  She doesn't speak English.  They didn't have a name for the baby yet.  The mother, saw the sign of "no smoking", asked what it meant.  Nurse explained.  Mother thought it sounded cool.  Their family name was King.  So she decided to name her son "Nosmo".  Full name = Nosmo King.

When I was about to be born, my dad wanted to name me Gertrude, or Trudy, after my grandmother. My mom HATED it, and wanted to name me Joy. She was headed over to a friends house to drop off a baby book, and the book fell open to Tracey. She looked at my dad and said, "what do you think of Tracey?", and he liked it, "but only if we spell it with the EY". That EY has been the bane of my existance!! EY is actually the MALE ending to Tracy ( and Tracie, Traci, Tracee are all female). And mom got Joy as my middle name. Tracey Joy. I've seen that Tracey means eloquence, but also courage. The courage part is interesting to me, as my mom's heritage is Scotish/ Ulster Scot, and our clan badge just has the word "courage" on it. Random, but cool.

I love the name Gideon. Seriously. Pat likes it because of the Beatles "Rocky Raccoon", I just like the sound of the name. Liam, Ian and Seth are also close. I wouldn't give him another Patrick, because he's born on St. Patrick's day, and that's special. I'd probably give a son either Patrick (sweetheart), or Jerome (dad's name and pat's middle), David (my dad's name) or Anthony (pat's confirmation name). Liam David sounds brilliant together, Gideon David is also quite nice (can you see where I'd leverage?)

For girls, I've always loved the name Felicity. And this is random, but I love the name Sioban. But I know that no one would ever spell or pronounce it correctly in the states. Olivia is also nice, if for no other reason than I could call her Ollie.

My brother wanted to name me Cookie (what else does a 3 year-old think about?)  My name came about because I was born on my Dad's birthday.  Couldn't be Larry Jr., so I guess Laurie was close enough.  That means more to me than it's book meaning "of the laurel leaves"  how boring.

My name is Polly- just Polly. It's not short for anything, not even Pollyanna. People seem to have a hard time with this. My brother's name is Robb- not short for Robert, which is confusing to people because my father's name is Robert.

I think I read an article on MSNBC not too long ago by a child of celebrities (don't remember who) asking celebs not to give their children weird names because eventaully they grow up (like she did) and the name stays with them...

My son is Jack, he's not named after Jack Bauer but I like to pretend that he is. That's kind of the opposite of what you are saying. My daughter is Julia and when she gets called Julie it's like nails on a chalkboard to my wife. Especially when it's by my dad.

BTW, my name is John, wife Jennifer, kids Jack and Julia. In a week and a half we'll have our third and if it's a he-Josh, she-Jordan or Jessica. I know, we're weird. Makes it easy to sign Christmas cards. "J4".

keep in mind that there is a hip hop group called Jurassic 5, and they quite often go by J5
