Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I gave mine back last time they were giving them out, assuming it didn't have the year on it and they can use it next year. I don't need more junk in my house. The last race I did they gave out towels soaked in ice water -- that was sweet! More specifically they threw them around our necks as we finished, since it was pretty warm out. I love that it's something reusable and it has the race name on it for memories sake. The shirts were way cool too. I've gotten the best swag racing/volunteering in Boulder. And there's always free microbrews. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I didn't get one for my first tri last Sunday. I didn't expect to get one either. the t-shirt is fine with me. I know I finished. I know how hard I worked. my satifaction comes from within not a medal. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I love finishers' medals! I don't care what distance they're for, I love them every time. When else do I get to walk around for an hour with a *medal* around my neck? I feel like an Olympian or something, even if it's "just" a sprint. In fact, I'll take a medal over a T-shirt any day (unless it's a tech shirt that I'm actually going to use). |

![]() My wife hates 'em cuz I hang them all on the back of the second bedroom door and (when I used to actually train) they'd make quite a racket at 5 am when i opened the door! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The very concept is of a 'finisher's medal' is kinda hokey though isn't it?! Am I proud of mine? Well, just take a look at my avatar. So I think they should give finisher's medals for all triathlons and here is why: 1. Compared to the entry fee, they are really cheap. Smaller races might have to go with a very generic medal so they use the same lot order and over several years. 2. Tee-shirts rot and end up as rags to wash your car. The harware last forever. 3. You can write your finish times on the back and have a permanant record of finish times, place, etc. 4. To many beginners, it's a sprint is as big as an accomplishment as ironman to many of us. 5. It would provide good publicity for our sport. People will see the medals hanging in your office or gym locker or garage and ask about them. Bada-bing, potential new triathlete.
I got a finisher's medal for a 1/2 marathon last year. I wrote my finish time on the medal and hung it along with all my other medals. I did this race several years ago....but I can't even tell you what year, yet alone what my finsih time was. OK, I guess this is more of #3.

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DerekL - 2009-07-31 6:56 PM You know, that's fine that you think that, but you could probably keep that to yourself or say it in a more tactful manner. You're on a board focused beginners in this sport. For many it's quite an achievement and one of the hardest things they've ever done. Let's not belittle that here. You're missing my point. I think someone getting a finisher medal is fine but I think 30years ago if you said "Can I have a medal for just finishing", you'd get laughed at. By the way in my last sprint I finished DFL in my age group so I am one of those people. My favorite "Finisher medals" are my bib numbers with the black mark across the front. I put my bib numbers on my wall. |

Yeah I guess you can...but then why give our medals for any race?! The numbers are nice...but they don't hang as nicely as medals. :-)

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() See, while I do not like the bib numbers. They are all wrinkly and messed up. Why would I want to hang that on my wall? Those go in a drawer. :-) But, true, the hardware lasts, and it doesn't get wrinkled and messed up. I could probably wash it and it would still be okay. Although loud in the washer. After reading this thread, I now feel that I better get a medal every race. I mean come on. What's the problem? If you don't want yours, I'll take it. :-D dbw27 Edited by dbw27 2009-07-31 6:48 PM |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KSH - 2009-07-31 5:32 PM No disrespect to the people who just do sprints... it just seems like... well, they don't give finishers medals for 5K's... ya know? It's kind of along those lines. Actually it is getting to the point where they DO give finishers medals for 5k runs. I have a few in my collection to prove it!!! but I agree drop the finishers medals and save me some money on the entry fees!!! I'm not a big fan of all this "everybody's a winner just for trying!" come on second place sux! if you're gonna do something aim for it and accomplish it to quote a great philosopher "Do or do not, there is no try" - Yoda Edited by was98strat 2009-07-31 7:10 PM |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() *whispers* Even though Wildflower in California was much much harder, I cherished and carried around the NYC medal for a week because that race was a race I really feared. I feared the intensity of a NYC race and being team-less and going it on my own. It was the first race I signed up for alone. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If they give them for 140.6, why not the other distances? For a good majority, finishing a sprint = finishing iron distance. I personally like medals, good way to remember races. Edited by dalessit 2009-07-31 7:18 PM |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My medals are my most cherished race crap. I hate the t-shirts, actually, I have no use for them. I have a tupperware full of them and have only wanted to wear one or two from my many (too many) races. Although I do agree with the concept that for a sprint or more "mainstream" race, I'd rather have a $5 cheaper registration fee. It's funny how finishing a half-marathon feels more medal worthy, when it takes me an hour longer to do an Oly. For that I want a medal! I am going to mention this to future RDs. I have no OLY medals, but one sprint medal. The rest are from Iron Girl (they are obnoxious) and running event. My least favorite medal is the one actually earned for 2nd place in a relay division. It was a du, and the freakin' medal has a little triathlon symbol on it! It's from the worst race organization in our state, so I am not surprised, but seriously? Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KeriKadi - 2009-07-31 4:37 PM I've only done 2 sprints. I got a medal at my second but I thought that was because it was a Y sponsored race and for whatever reason the YMCA thinks EVERONE needs a medal. I didn't know other sprints gave out medals. I don't have a problem with it but I don't need one either. I gave mine to one of my little girls - she thought it was cool. I would have preferred a nicer shirt cause the one I got is crap. Gotta agree with you on the Y believing everyone deserves a medal - We didn't keep score in the kids soccer league for the two years we were in the Y league - but everyone got a trophy at the end of the season! I also have to agree with Karen - they should hand out medals at the my first tri's - but not at every sprint or even every oly - maybe at the biggest oly races like NYC or Chicago or somthing, but not at the run of the mill summer weekend oly's... |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got a medal at a race and they had no refreshment's whatsoever after the race (ahem Mountain Tri)...not even Gatorade...I would have totally traded my medal for some bananas, oranges and Gatorade. I pretty much agree. ..medals for bigger distances, but its not really that big of deal. Just give me food at the end! |
![]() ![]() |
Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why not? It's a little snobbish to suggest that a sprint competitor doesn't deserve one when an Oly, HIM or IM do. Everyone comes from a different place in life, to some it may be a huge accomplishment. Maybe they shouldn't give medals to top finishers, they probably have enough already that they don't even care about another plaque or trophy. ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I find them totally uninteresting. I've got one from a marathon, a sprint, a HIM, and maybe some others -- I don't really know. My kids use them as toys. But if it makes other people happy, I say 'great'. Give them out. It's a tiny percentage of my registration fee anyway, and if that makes some people happy then fantastic. (I'm not being sarcastic even if it sounds that way.) |
![]() ![]() |
Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why are we talking about this? It's like I tell my kids.."If it's doesn't effect you, then WHY worry about it". If you like 'em (medals), keep it. If you don't feel 'worthy' because of the distance, by all means, give it back. But don't throw stones at the shorter-distance triathletes. And sorry, but it does sound like we're throwing stones. Next topic, please. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hate the T-shirts too. For one thing, they usually don't have my size, so then I can't wear it afterwards without looking like a little kid who stole their shirt from their mom (or Dad, I guess, since it's usually a "uni-sex" shirt, aka make women wear guy shirts). I think they'd save more money if they didn't give out t-shirts than if they didn't give out medals. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() everyone has a different reason for stepping to the starting line. the medal represents something different for every person. for some, its trash and is lost before they get home. for others, it is cherished and it will be giving to a grandchild some day. doesn't really matter. the distance of a race doesn't quantify an achievement or justify a medal. Staying true to yourself throughout the journey does. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have done two half mary's and got medals for both. Kind of cool to me then because they were my first real running events. The first tri I did was a sprint and they gave out medals, again kind of cool because it was my first. Just did my second last weekend, and they did not give out medals, but the t-shirt was a really good shirt (dri fit kind), and I was thrilled with that too. I think its fine to give out medals. You never know what that medal might mean to someone. |
![]() ![]() |
Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've never got a finishers medal for a sprint and don't see the need. Same with Oly races. I'd rather have no medal and a nicer t-shirt. I've never done HIM or IM, but it seems that a medal for those distances, as well as 1/2 Marys and longer seems right. |
![]() ![]() |
Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why do people even care? I think medals are nice and as others have said, they do remind you of an experience (if you ever take the time to look at them). I personally think race t-shirts are a total joke and wish RDs would save the $$ on them. I cut mine up and use them to clean my bike. I'm never going to parade around town in an ill fitting cheap t-shirt. Now the better races that offer technical T's are nice and I'd rather have that than a medal. I've gotten medals for running races as short as a 10K (Marine Corps Mary 10K, NY Women's Mini), but have done several half marathons with no medal. It didn't make the races any more or less significant. I think it's a nice gesture and it means a lot to a lot of people and you shouldn't have to do an HIM or IM to get the reward. For some a sprint or an Oly is a massive personal and athletic accomplishment. I know my first ones were. |
