I know I'm not "old"...but I definitely had "aging" moments in grad school.
Such as....being the only one in the room to remember life BEFORE THE INTERNET*.
I actually had an undergraduate as me how we found articles before JStor. He actually thought that academic publishing before the internet/electronic databases was just.not.done.Like we were using Gutenberg or something. He was blown away by the fact that we had to use card catalogs and subject indexes. And type on word processors. Nice kid, just not that bright at times.
BTW...I'm 24.
*I guess more accurately: before the Internet and computers became widely available for public use.
This is a fun thread. Speaking of 20-somethings, I had an experience with a 20-something (no, not that kind of experience ) that made me feel older but in a good way. I'm back in grad school getting a degree in tax law. I signed up to do a national writing competition put out by the ABA. The rules stated we had to work in pairs and I was teamed up with a 20-something fresh out of law school. Teams were selected by the profs so I had no input, but I was pretty happy that I was working with an attractive young lady. My happiness quickly faded. She was bright and all, but her lack of experience really showed. As the project deadline was nearing, she just freaked out. I remember thinking, wow, if you're going to stress out like this over a little school assignment, good luck practicing law.
It's funny in class, too, because the young kids don't seem to want to talk to us older students and the old guys kind of stick together. The only guys that talk to me during breaks have gray hair and wrinkles. |
