Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm usually not a total home-brewed solution kind of person, but with the success I've had with using bulk maltodextrin (10x-20x cheaper than Hammer Perpetuem, 95% the same!), I'm going to give a well known gel-substitute a try on my next few rides: - Karo Corn Syrup (you can definitely get this in the baking aisle of your grocery for about $3, and it's a pretty big bottle equivalent to at least 50 GUs in volume) According to the web, 2T = 130 calories, short-acting sugars (good for the GU boost), and you can dissolve more malto into it for more calories if needed. I have a gel container for it now, and I'm going to give it a try. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay - I'm going to ask because I'm really starting to worry about fuel for my HIM... I use sport beans because I also use regular jelly beans and gummy bears for training. Why would you go to a gel if you're using sport beans? They have electrolytes and seem to be about equivalent in calories as the gels? (They are also listed in Triathlon Canada's list of "Quick Fuel" along with Gu Chomps and Honey Stinger Chews.) |

I was wondering the same thing. I used to use gels when they were the alternative to powerbars. (My favorite was stinger honey for the texture, followed by Chocolate Gu for the taste). But gels are much less convenient than blocks or beans. If you don't consume the whole thing at once, the rest of the gel comes out of the package leaving a big mess wherever. And if you DO consume the whole thing, there is still residue that in warmer weather (or warm jersey pockets) softens and slowly oozes out all over the place. But even if they spill all over, blocks and beans don't leave a sticky mess everywhere, and you can stick them in your jersey pocket or bento box and not worry about them. |

Besides texture (which I'm a candy junkie) that is the best reason not to go with gels! I just dump my beans into my bento box along with some gummy bears or swedish berries and I'm good to go! I unwrap them and stick them in my skirt pocket for the run. No wrapper to get rid of, no slimy goo anywhere. (Someone posted on here that they didn't finish their chocolate gel and stuck it in their suit and ended up with a brown trail down their leg. *ewwwww*) They are more expensive than gels though ... |

You can use whatever works for you! I perfer not to deal with gels on the bike for just that reason. I've used shot bloks instead in the past, and this year went to Infinit for all of my nutrition on the bike. I prefer gels to solids (like sports beans) on the run, because I find them easier to get down while running - and a gel flask helps avoid the mess you're talking about, plus allows you to just take what you want (i.e., you don't have to down a whole packet all at once, you can just take a small shot if thats all you want). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fielding - 2009-07-03 2:14 AM I like the Honey Stinger gels. They make several flavors -- like strawberry, banana, chocolate -- but I prefer the plain, which tastes just like regular honey. I've found these are by far the easiest for me to consume during a race; almost all other gels make me sick just thinking about when I'm running. Before a race I can tolerate pretty much any gel (since I dislike them all fairly equally). I have to agree, I have tried just about all brands and Honey Stinger tastes the best and works just as well as the rest. A positive for me is that it is all natural. If you like honey you will love this gel. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone for the responses. I'll have to give some of the more popular ones a try! However, I am kind of concerned about the whole messiness factor (chocolate gu running down the leg...ewww!) ![]() Silver Wlf: Sometimes the sport beans just taste too sweet and I can't get them down. Do you ever have a problem with that too? Usually I'll put a mix of shot bloks (cut in half) and sport beans in my bento box and rotate between them and that seems to help. But, I guess I'm just looking for a way to switch things up a bit. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Accel gel - Key lime with water as a chaser. I've tried many of the gels throughout the past few years while doing various long duration Fire and Rescue training sessons (confined space, trench/ building collapse) and that seems to work the best. I'm only comming up on my second Tri but I have been training with the gels durning workouts too just to develop the skill of performing while using the gel. |

However, I am kind of concerned about the whole messiness factor (chocolate gu running down the leg...ewww!) ![]() I totally found this. I really like sportbeans and shotbloks but my stomach revolts after two hours with them. Plus the bits in the teeth is kinda gross to me after a while I just feel like i have sugar mouth that water doesn't seem to wash it away. Even though I prefer the bloks or beans the gels work well for workouts longer than two hours. I take forever to get through a gel but it works for me. I like Gu's lemon sublime. It took a while to find ones I like ... there are some that are nastier than others ... have fun experimenting! |

But, I guess I'm just looking for a way to switch things up a bit. That makes sense!! I'm a candy junkie. I will seriously eat myself sick. Then eat more. (My brother and I used to go to the Bulk Barn, pick up disgusting amounts of sugar and eat until our stomachs hurt....) So candy has been my fuel of choice because I always can eat it. ![]() Honestly I find they are a little "salty" compared to regular jelly beans - hence the gummie bears and swedish berries... I know - I'm weird. |
