Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: Well... the iPad... you getting one? OK, just watched the video on Apple's website. I'm not the most technologically savvy person out there, but what I'm seeing is just an Iphone on steroids: physically bigger, more powerful, designed to run more powerful apps as well as the bazillion apps currently out there. Is that all it is? What am I missing? Don't get me wrong. I've had my Iphone for four days now and I am amazed at what it can do, and know I've only scratched the surface (not literally, just a few smudges on the glass). Bigger, more powerful, OK, I'd buy that. But is that all it is? |

That being said, i would consider ditching my iphone (and saving all of the monthly fees) for a regular cell and using this instead. |

Nope. I've bought store brand mp3 players. They've worked just as well, and don't make you install I-tunes. You mean you don't get to install and use itunes. We have other MP3 players in addition to our ipods, and Itunes makes for a lot easier download, sync and management of content. There may be other software out there that is as easy to use, but I have yet to see it. Apple is slowly winning me over, first with the nano (mine's still going strong after >5 years) and now my Iphone. Not sure I have a use for the Ipad now, but if the need develops I wouldn't hesitate. Nope, I meant what I said. A friend borrowed my computer and used it for itunes once. I played with it a bit and wasn't impressed. To each their own. |

Expert 798 Kewaunee, WI | Subject: RE: Well... the iPad... you getting one? I am in for one. Primarily for the e reader aspect. I am sick of buying books only to put them on the shelf. When I run on the treadmill in winter this will fit perfectly in my little magazine rack, so now I can stream movies and run. Nice. Also, it will be great for travel and housing our pictures which will never get printed and why when you take them with you on a little portable computer. Yes, it is a little pricey. I have spent way more for gadgets for triathlon...that's for sure. Edited by TracyV 2010-01-27 3:26 PM |

(Keyboard problem - not much love out there for mono-plane keyboards, most people work better with the feel of keys. It might be an interesting media convergence devicse but will not be very practical for actual work.... Just my 2 cents. I am a little underwhelmed - lots of fanfare going into it, I expected, well more. Apple has a rep for breakthrough products and I just don't think this one is on par with either iPod or iPhone - iTouch was a little bit of a let down, this one more so... |

Champion 8540 the colony texas | Subject: RE: Well... the iPad... you getting one? I'm getting three.... ok maybe not,,, I might be missing something but it seems like an iTouch & ipod with a ebook reading all combined. I thought having a screen that refreshes the way the Ipad does is bad for using as an ebook reader which is why like the nook or kindle don't have it. Maybe you can turn that off?? What I LOVED and I wish this was universal.. is that once you download a song you have instant access to that song everywhere on any device you own without syncing up with the computer.. If you are on the go and buy a song through your phone driving to the gym, when you get to the gym and put on your iPod, that song is there instantly. No syncing of the iphone/computer/ipod needed.. that is nice |

That's why they also announced a companion keyboard dock, which gives you tactile keys. Between my laptop and Android phone I'm covered, and perfectly good laptops can be bought for far less than these prices. |

Veteran 840 | Subject: RE: Well... the iPad... you getting one? My choices are... Ipod Touch (for mobile kindle reading, audible books and games) plus highly portable. Netbook (have one already but I'll get a new one, internet access, can read books and keyboard). Nook or Kindle (for relaxed reading). OR Ipod Touch Ipad I will probably go with the first combo. The big problem is that the Ipad won't sit on my lap and let me type easily on forums like this. So I plan on getting a nook/kindle and upgrading my Netbook for not a lot more than a Ipad. Eventually I'll probably replace my blackberry with a Ipod or Android phone and be able to drop the touch. |

Expert 1690 | Subject: RE: Well... the iPad... you getting one? Its an awesome concept but like the ipod initially Id wait a year and see how much better they get. I think apple intentionally doesnt use their max capabilities to make sure there are future upgrades available. In a year or two this bad boy will be 2-3 times better than at initial release. |

Its 720p... don't see anything crappy about that. I think its crappy. 1024x768 isn't that large these days. (and also isn't 720P) When other devices have an 800x480 resolution on a 3" screen, I am sure Apple of all companies could come up with something that has a bit higher pixel density. Of course, it was probably kept low on purpose so that the stretched iPhone apps wouldn't look like total junk. I think the biggest mistake was crippling it with iPhone OS. They should have released it running OSX proper. Now that would have been game changing. Edited by tikicult 2010-01-28 7:39 AM |
