They lounge all day while we prepare their food and drinks and they can go to the bathroom wherever they please as we follow them around and clean it up. WHO is the slave? If you have ever been to a country that does not generally consider dogs to be pets, you have seen dogs that are not "slaves". They are generally hungry and afraid of people, and not having much of a life. My dogs get to spend their days in a warm and dry environment, they have constant access to fresh food and water. They get to spend their days looking at the world go by, or sleep on couches and beds. They spend their nights in bed with their pack (fortunately we have a king size bed!). They have purpose when the humans are around, so they are not as apt to be bored. They are no more slaves than I am. They could easily, if they wanted, take off from the porch and leave forever if they were so inclined. When the one has run off, she is constantly looking back to play the chase game. The main way I get her back, in fact is to catch her eye and then run away from HER. She loves to run and knock me over. I am pretty sure she knows this is a pretty good deal - much as her wolfish ancestors figured out that hanging out by the cavemen was going to be a good deal for them. It has, in fact, helped dogs to be nearly as successful a species as humans, living on all continents that humans are on, and even getting to space ahead of us... |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Evolving AND back to the levity: Jackemy1 - 2013-03-26 6:07 AM Until my dog starts cooking dinner, getting my drinks, walking me to the toilet, giving me massages, and paying for the roof over my head, I am pretty sure I am the slave in the relationship. For sure! I have always tried to figure out a way for the dogs to start contributing. Nut much for hunting and the lack of opposable thumbs hinders them a bit. If you could get paid for sneezing in your face, they would be millionaires. |

Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: Evolving My father is an Entomologist (bug guy). He raised me to understand that we're the inferior species on this planet. Bugs and their arthropod brothers live in the highest mountaintops, the bottom of the sea, mouths of volcanoes, our floors, our gardens, the males can sense the females miles away and dragonflies can breed while flying at 25 miles per hour. That's pretty awesome. But even with that dominance, like Kate said, bacteria and microscopic organisms are not only in us, they're essential to us. Without them we couldn't digest food. OP, don't feel so guilty for being dominant. We're actually at about the middle of the food chain. Next to wolves (dogs) and bears. |

I opened my sliding door last night and told my dogs that they were free. I knelt down an even pointed to freedom. They both licked my face then sat down and looked at me so I went back to the sofa and popped in some Call of Duty. |
