However, if I had a bike rack (I plan on getting a hitch mounted rack) I would use it to transport it to local races. |

I'd strap it to the front of the car so in case you hit something with the front of your car, the bike will absorb some of the shock first j/k. Put it in the car if you can. I only use my bike racks when I don't have room inside the car aka kids and their ten bags they need heh. |

I can live with someone giving me a small fender bender where I need to repair my bumper when time permits. I can't deal with someone crushing my bike, and me going through the long process of getting it replaced...especially if I'm on my way to a race. If I absolutely had to...I'd use a trunk rack...but never ever would I use a roof rack. |

Have a CRV now and it is even easier to get my bike inside it. |

It can get a bit dicey when both the DH and I are doing the same races with trying to fit 2 bikes and all of our gear into 1 car, but we haven't had a problem yet - just rent either a hatch back or an SUV and you're good to go. Which would be T's bike in our household. That's what we usually get from Zipcar is the Mazda 3 Hatchback - awesome car with a lot of space in the back for bikes (once we take the front wheels off). Hilarious -- exact same situation here! We get my P2 and my husband's Look 566 in the Mazda 3 hatchback Zipcar all the time. |

As my races are about 5 miles away, most of the time I just cycle my road bike in, drop it off, and catch a bus home. Race morning is too early to get a bus, so I usually book a cab. A couple of times I've had lots of extra stuff so I had to put my bike on the bike rack on the front of the bus. I then begged and pleaded with the bus driver not to hit anything on the drive in. One driver, did a huge double take and said "is that really a Cervelo road bike on MY bike rack"? I nodded and then he told me all about his brand new Cannondale road bike, as he drove very very carefully. Just goes to show that you meet bike crazies everywhere |

However with that being said I've transported my bike on the back of my blazer when moved 1700 miles from nj to tx, then back again on a 3000 mile road trip on my wife's car, all with a yakima joe something or other, never had a problem, I'd just check the straps when I stopped to get gas. A small bungie cord through the front wheel and around the handle bars kept it from bouncing around. Bike stayed mostly clean and am not afraid to do it again if need be. |

I got a new car a few months ago (Ford Fusion) and don't trust the strap carriers at all. I used it on my old car and it chips the paint but I used it on my new one and one of the straps came loose and I saw it when I arrived at my bike location. Has nothing to do with car but just the way that thing is (iffy...). I wanted to get a hitch one but a hitch kit for my car requires me to permanently remove bottom fender pieces. No thanks... Luckily it fits inside my car. Rather have it in the inside than outside anyway. At least I can run into a store before/after and not worry about someone jacking it. The only ones that will ride back there are my dog and my bike. For far away races we take the wife's minivan. The minivan is the coolest vehicle created - comfy, utilitarian and efficient. |

On my Jeep Grand Cherokee I have a roof rack that can hold up to five bikes, or four bikes and two wheels (two of the five mounts are fork mounts). That way if we're carpooling to a race I can take folks with me, or I can take the whole family biking somwhere. For a local race if the weather is nice, I have a hitch mount rack on the back my my Jeep Wrangler. |

Like LB said, it's just a bike, despite a sizable investment in it (Speed Concept 7.0 + Mavic Cosmic Carbones + Quarq) The only concession is padding it with scraps of an old sweatshirt where the rack contacts the carbon fiber + a rubber coated cable with a Master Lock if I stop anywhere.

We have a bike rack but it is a pain to put on and I'm always nervous someone is going to hit my bike or it will fall off (my friends have an SUV and their two bikes were on a bike rack going to a race- when they got to the race only one bike was still on the bike rack!). I know someone who had that happen! He was about a month out from a goal event -- Assault on Mt Mitchell -- when he was rear ended while transporting his bike. The bike didn't make it! |
