Geez, I am a piker. New to triathloning from a marathoning background, I got up to 27 mph last weekend on a ride. I even called up my brother after some beers to brag about it. This forum is not healthy for self delusion. :-)

The fastest I ever went was on my mountain bike downhill style on a track (or lack of it really), not a road. I got pumped up by all the kids flying around me, gave it a try and released the brakes. The clock showed 74km/h that is 45.99mph. It ended with me flying over the bike when I hit a rock, a broken wheel, and a scare since luckily I did not get hurt. Won't try that one again.

On a flat, on my own power I can not go faster than 46km/h (28.59mph), but only for a short distance. With a mountain bike that's not too surprising I guess.

on my trainer I managed to sprint up to 101km/h but that was only short 30 sec sprint.
on the road I've hit 96km/h going down a killer hill tucked in behind a car, then my mate went past me like i was standing still tucked in behind a motorbike.
Good rush!

44 mph coming down a long hill in the Maine Sport Triathlon near Camden Maine. I could feel my cheeks being sucked backwards. Cheeks of my face, that is.

I was pulled over by the county sherrif for doing 48 in a 35 on Mile Hill Rd. With a name like that you know it is a fun road to ride, bit only ine one direction. He didnt write me a ticket, but he did encourage me to slow down before I kill myself! He was not nearly as impressed that I was able to catch and over take him as I was I guess!

When I got home and told my wife what I thought was a rather funny story she was ready to kill me! Something about having to be around for 18 more years to raise my daughter.

Now I just dont tell her when I go fast. The one advantage to being a clydsdale is the decents!

53 MPH years ago at the back of a pace line during a race down a 12 % grade mountain. I admit at being scared to death. 42 mph just one time on a flat sprint.

Personally - 53.1 mph coming down a 17% grade hill in the Highlander Cycle Tour, a century in upstate NY with brutal hills. No aerobars, just a big tuck and a big gear and a big push. Not even someone to draft behind. Got to make sure you've got your wheels trued cause otherwise that first slight wobble (accentuated at speed) is all she wrote. And scout the hill first for rocks, turns, you name it...

Editorial note: Same hill, different guy (Jim Scorse) went 67.6 mph down the same hill...I thought he was drafting the TGV, but it turned out he drafted a car for 3/4 mile, then three other guys pulled hard down the hill for him, slingshotting him down the steepest part of the hill (about 19%). We even checked his cyclometer to make sure he wasn't using 650s on the bike but the cyclometer calculating based on 700s. And the French doping agency cleared him, too. Ohmigod.

I hit the mid 40's mph regularly on pretty much any ride around here (Blue Ridge Mountains). My best was 56 mph coming off Buffalo Ridge (16% grade). My best on aerobars is only 47, 'cause I'm a wuss. My best flatland sprint ever is 40. I LOVE passing cars.

LOL.  That is really funny...you over took a sherrif...in his car!  I've been pulled over by the police for rolling a stop sign, but never for speeding.

You should have requested a ticket and make sure he put on there that you were riding a bike....that way you could have framed the ticket !

OK, I'm going to stick out my neck here and be declared a candidate for the insanity home.  I can regularly hit 50+ on my triathlon bike, and have done that in a sprint down the Kancamagus highway and also down through Crawford Notch, both in New Hampshire.  But it's got to be on the cowhorns, the handling is too freaky on the aero bars above 50 mph.

My highest speed was on the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, and it was coming down either Rabbit Ears Pass or Berthoud Pass, I've forgotten which.  I was drafting behind a tandem, hit a particularly steep pitch and pulled out to pass them.  I was too scared &%$#-less to look but at the bottom my computer read 62 mph (yeah it was accurately calibrated)!  We did several other passes on that week-long trip, and I remember a few times passing cars on the descents.  I was riding a standard road bike then, I don't think I'd feel that comfortable on my tri-bike at that speed, not with the increased seat tube angle and the more twitchy steering.

My PB is 39.3mph on a bike tour a couple weeks ago.  Boy was that fun!  Didn't know how close I was to 40mph or I would have tried harder to go faster.  Park speed limit is 30mph.  I don't get to speed on my bike very often.  Hills that you can just let your bike run are rare around here.  Seems like most are too short or they end in a T intersection and a stop sign.  What is with that anyway?  LOL!

Oh and thanks for the bump.  This thread was fun to read!

Fastest on Road bike with a slight decline is 38 mph.  Never really rode any mountain roads with my road bike

On my mountain bike on pavement I hit 46.  All the trails by my work empty onto STEEP paved roads that we get to cruise down.   This one time I just pedaled as hard as I could from the top.  I hit 46 and got the feeling like I was going to die, so I layed on the brakes.  Upper 30s are fun, but over 40 I start thinking of the 100 foot long goo trail I would leave if I wrecked.

Riding with BTers from CT, I hit 46.6 and I had to feather my brakes a bit as I was catching someone quickly...it was a rush!! I can't wait to hit 50...my husband doesn't think that is such a great idea for a 44 year old Mom of 5. So now I don't  tell him my top speed.

I want to ride that hilly route again with them to see what I can do when I just go...I want to hit 50+.

My best according to my cyclometer is 62.7 mph.  (I might have gotten a peak from some electrical interferance)   That was at 6 Gaps in Georgia.  My friend and I were drafting off each other.  It's nuts when you get really close because you get sucked into his slip stream.  It you're not careful, you'll touch.

Regularly, I'll be in the low 50's.  Never in the Aerobars.  It's actually more aerodynamic in the drops for speed like that.  Plus I like to have the brake handy.  I'm dumb..not stupid!

And to think 1.5 yrs ago, I wouldn't even think about 35!  Wow...

here in PA, i've maxed out at 49.7 mph... same as many others, just ran outta hill... but when i lived in tucson there was a hill (north side of town into the foothills, "craycroft road", wide open, you can see anything which might be an obstruction) and this thing had a hill that wasn't super long (1/3 mile or so)but was like a roller coaster... it was probably the longest i've ever been on grade that steep... musta been about 18-20%... it was rediculous. hit 55.6 mph on that. i've been cycling/ bike racing for a decade... and that was about my max. i'd like to try it again just to feel that rush... but probably won't ever go out to tucson again.

I've hit 52 on a MTB (on the road). We were doing speed runs down a hill...

I did a stage race in Wenatchee many years ago. I saw 51 mph on my computer, and I was being passed like I was standing still. Then there was the hairpin turn half-way down... SMell of burning brake pads... Lean hard... Open up, and right back to 50 mph.
